It feels like Berube bet on aligning himself with the players and not really challenging them. I don't think you can buddy up to the core, be part of the country club, ride the highs of those big party games and comeback heroics without these massive hangover kind of games.

Berube's job was to install an all business approach but I think has fallen victim to up and down cycle of Auston and Mitch hockey. They might come back in the third and look like conquering heroes, they might look like dogs the rest of the game, but to me the low effort of the first and second period means process doesn't work.

I don't understand all this emphasis on D when the D wasn't really why they could never advance in the playoffs. Is there any indication that they will be able to score goals when it actually matters? Not really. So what was the point of hiring Berube?

I can honestly say I have seen the Leafs dominate the other teams once or twice all season long. The early season Tampa Bay game being one.

The other wins have been ho hum tbth.

This is the exact same thing we have seen from the Leafs the last nine years in a row no matter who is the coach or GM.
Really makes you wonder if Shanny and the core 4 are the once pulling the strings

there have been about half a dozen dominate wins I would guess. The rest have been goaltending and as you say, ho hum.

What seems strange though, is that early in the season it was working, or so we were fooled to think by the stellar goaltening. Maybe the players and coaches were fooled too and are only now realizing they need to adjust some things? Once can only hope.

I do not believe this style of play leads anywhere. Our star players do not play at their peak consistenly enough for this to work imo.

My impression watching Matthews and Marner over the course of their careers is they are low discipline athletes who don’t have good quality control over what they bring you night to night. Sometimes they bring it all. Sometimes they coast on talent and that dictates what you get. Sometimes they slack off and push through just enough to win. So yeah, maybe a day in day out blue collar approach doesn’t work. But saying they’re incompatible with this style just means they’re not that coachable and really just give you what they feel like.

No Knies, no one in front for rebounds? Wasn't McMann billed as power forward? Maybe they really need Tavares back, Pacioretty does one hit then gassed.

The early unexpectedly great goaltending performances masked a lot of the issues this team have.
Berube's genius defensive style was nothing but the acquisition of Stolarz, Tanev and OEL and the improvement of McCabe. All he's done that I can see any evidence of, is completely neuter the offense.

Marner does nothing of value that period but give the puck away, giving the opposition it's best chance of the period. Fortunately for him old man Tanev still has wheels.

Same ol' same ol'

Meanwhile Nylander hits the post on the breakaway.
