As up and down as the team's performance was tonight against Ottawa, I thought it was one of Serge's better games. It was good timing for it with Heddy being out.
other than the first couple of games he has been pretty good. idk about 8.5 million good but close enough i guess
Heddy being out can be good Sergy. He's been living in the shadow of a legend and maybe for the next little bit he has to be the guy. Let's see if he can handle it.

As for his contract, I'm not sure I've seen one that is more about a players perceived future value.

what about ELCs?

I think you know that the dollars involved are what I was getting at and that they are what makes Sergy's contract somewhat unique.

And the truth is that as often as not an ELC represents a league enforced gross underpayment to a player providing significantly higher value the dollars he is being paid. Not the same thing at all.

but it's based upon potential, just like the majority of NHL contracts

the idea is econ 101; buy low. we pay for potential, and for FA years, up front because bridge deals cost more in the long run.

Is Nathan McKinnon's new contract based on potential or what he has already proven that he can do? Colorado gave him the big money and term because they expect him to be exactly what he has been, not necessarily something more than that.

Now, would you say that Sergy has already proven what he can do? I don't think so, but he got the big bucks and term anyway. That's the difference.

nate mac was an UFA, we bought UFA years which costs money.

i want to be clear: im not arguing to make people like serge, or the contract. but it's market value, and it's not a JBB failure as some would make it appear.

I have not suggested or implied that this is a JBB failure. Now, if Sergy's development stagnates and the player he is today is the player that he always is, then it will be. Simply put, to me, this contract is more of a gamble than most in this dollar range based on past performance. This one is still mostly about potential and usually when a contract like this one is given out, the proof is, for the most part, already there. That's all. We know the talent is there, can he put the complete game together to justify it?

thats fair. its a contract and must have consideration by both parties, so it's always going to be a gamble. i dont want to stratify it, but whatever. i disagree that most contracts on RFAs are more guaranteed performance-wise, but again, whatever.

I never used the word guaranteed. As the saying goes, "past performance is not a guarantee of future success", ever, no matter who you are talking about. I just find Sergy to be a uniquely enigmatic player with a larger beta than most at this stage of his career and with the contract he's got. In short, you don't want to stratify it, and I sort of am.

I think compared to past TB contracts, as opposed to league wide contracts, this one looks like a bigger gamble. Probably the biggest gamble we've seen in a while on an RFA.

Although it kind of seems like JBB's real bet is on the cap going up.

i like how when he has bad games he identifies them publicly and says he needs to take the next step and that he is working on it. even when he has good offensive games he will identify his poor defensive moments. thats how you grow.
He has another mistake to identify publicly. I want an apology for giving Dallas a point.

when exactly did he start running PP1? rough for us hedman fantasy owners

Sorry but don't try to frame this as him not being worthy of that kind of money or paying for potential.

These are his salary/position/points comps for this season alone, and you can do last year and see similar. We didn't "pay now for his potential", hes f***ing good right now. He plays big minutes right now. He puts up points right now.

But also he turns the puck over once in a while...
