Post-Game Talk: Mike Smith beats Hutch. Oilers win 3-2

Smith gave up 2 goals on 3.2 expected goals against, Hutchinson gave up 3 goals on 1.9 expected goals against. I truly can't fathom why it would be hard to admit that the Leafs were the better team but Smith was the better goalie
I once “expected” to go out on a date with Mary , the hottest girl in HS , but alas I ended up with her sister Fred, at least I thought it was her sister ? ......could have been Lola though
life’s a bitch

This team really needs another bonafide goal-scorer badly. The lack of finishing ability is not great when our goaltending outside of the cases where Campbell is healthy sucks.

That would require saying our goalie wasn't great today but criticizing our goalie even a little is not allowed.

I missed the 1st. From what I watched from the 2nd on, a scrambly, scrappy game where I think the Leafs had the better of the play, but did not capitalize. Was that Smith or poor finishing, or bad luck? I think a combination of all three.

Trying to bury Hutch for this loss is such a Leaf fan thing to do. Could have been better on the breakaway, no chance on the deflection, and jeez louise he has to respect McDavid in OT. Regardless, he was signed to be our 4th and has played better than expected - save one game. That said, the injuries to Campbell and Andersen are very concerning. As the organization is loathe to hand out info on the nature of these injuries, we don't know how badly or for how long these guys will be compromised. I do not see an easy solution, my fingers are crossed.

Our last 11 games have seen the team score 28 goals, or 2.545 goals/game. It's hard to consistently win when you're scoring at that rate. The PP needs to contribute more. Matthews wrist, Tavares (oh boy that crossbar in the 3rd) low percentage and some timely depth scoring would certainly help.

I know this is echo chamber stuff here, but I am so confused as to how Leaf games are officiated. The amount of clutching and grabbing they have to wade through, or the Yamamoto against Marner non call and then the Simmonds call against...this league at times = frustration.

Ray of sunshine moment: while the results of the past 11 (back to the Van series) have not been great, the team is still holding the edge in play most games. There is a 'sometimes you win/sometimes you lose' element to hockey that is based on nothing other than that's the way the puck bounces. Right now it's not bouncing our way and I don't like it, but I'll take the effort level and believe that the results will improve because better play usually results in wins.

Pet Peeve: Rielly never, EVER, slides on the 2 on 1.

Standing there in the middle does absolutely nothing.

Just to reply to myself....

Watch Brodie when he's the 1. Slides almost every time.

If Mo has a legit reason for it - i.e. it's an injury risk - that's fair. But otherwise, just slide. It takes away the pass and the net drive.

We've averaged exactly 3 GF/G in the month of March. Tied with the Jets, and .33 behind the Oilers. And this is also our slump.

I'm putting my money on the offense heating back up shortly.

The Bolts are 3 points ahead of us with a game in hand. For the Presidents trophy.

Plus we're going to add at the deadline and hopefully have 2 NHL goalies heading into the playoffs.

110 point pace over 82 games.

Our best season ever was 105 three seasons ago.
But but regression

I mean in the last 10 games, outside of the ones where Campbell played our goalies have consistently been putting up sub .900 despite not actually having that many dangerous chances to deal with. Both the D and goaltending are responsible to some degree, but one has been more of an issue lately.

Yeah I said it earlier - goaltending is our biggest problem. Got a solid performance from our 3rd stringer tonight though so that's something I guess.

*Could say he had a better game. And not by much apparantly.

If you get this angry every time someone disagrees with you, you're going to have a difficult life.

For someone who puts words in other peoples' mouths every post ("all goals are 100% goalies fault!") you sure get sensitive when others do it to you.

Your lies are getting tiresome.

If you learned how to read better then you'd know I've never said they do.

I couldn't respond to your post about the standings being the best measure..

As I said earlier that standings are the best single measure we have to compare teams but they're not perfect. Yes I had Toronto as the favourites, so did every bookmaker on the planet and there were good reasons for this.

Every book maker has the Leafs with better odds of winning the cup than the Oilers.

So maybe those who feel the Leafs are much better than the Oilers is another example of the standings not being perfect like you thought the Blue Jackets and Leafs being equal in the standings is also an example of it.

Our team defense was incredible tonight, the Oilers top unit couldn't get anything going 5 on 5. Felt like every-time one of Drai/McDavid tried to get a pass through we had someone in the lane.

Add another top 6 forward and we're set. We need someone who can bury chances

Well, all in all 6-1-2 on the season series against the Oilers is pretty damn good. Frustrating tonight because we deserved a better fate.
Meh..I dunno. I think the Leafs dominating a team that beats up on easy competition isn't a huge deal. They just took care of business like a pro.

I'm excited to play the Jets, it'll be a good set and Marner and Matthews both scoring tonight is great.

Nice post. Too bad you missed the first, other than blundering a breakaway goal early, we were a joy to watch. :)

Here's my question with adding a top 6 winger

1. Where do you play them?
2. Who comes out? Thornton's my pick, but how does the team respond to that?

and that’s exactly what would have happened if Mathews buries the OT goal. But yes smith came up bigger when it counted.

Only team in the north that's able to keep McDavid/Drai in check in a somewhat respectable manner (relative to how much they dominate the rest of the division). Quite amazing to watch.

There's no reason for them not to be up with the top 3-4 teams in P% playing in this division. Still time to do it, hoping the last 10 games is our lowpoint this year

Right now they'd go on the top line with Matthews/Marner. If that second line keeps this up there's no way you change it imo. Galchenyuk looks great up there

I'd also remove Thornton but you can rotate him in every couple games if needed. The team should be fine, we're in the business of winning and this is a move to win. They're adults and should understand that, it's not like we're trading Joe or anything.

Hutch wasn’t terrible , he also wasn’t amazing either .

really would like the leafs to give Vehvilainen a shot this week whats there to lose ?

I get that we want Rielly out in OT for the offense, but sometimes I wish we'd try Brodie or Holl out there first instead and perhaps have a better chance at preventing a goal when the puck comes our way. I feel like on the game winning 2 on 1 that its more likely that Brodie would've at least taken away the pass and let Hutch deal with a shot from McDavid than do what Rielly did which was neither.
