Post-Game Talk: Mike Smith beats Hutch. Oilers win 3-2

I couldn't respond to your post about the standings being the best measure..

Every book maker has the Leafs with better odds of winning the cup than the Oilers.

So maybe those who feel the Leafs are much better than the Oilers is another example of the standings not being perfect like you thought the Blue Jackets and Leafs being equal in the standings is also an example of it.

Good point, point taken. I think I did say that I believe we are better than the Oilers, I just think it's not a given that we would beat them if we faced them in the playoffs and I think they deserve more respect than some people are giving them. I was pointing to the standings to show that there's not a huge gap between us at the moment anyway, I'd also say that going to OT twice in a row against them like we just did also suggests that they're not the doormats some people think they are.

I haven't looked at the cup odds lately but you've made me curious. I suspect that our goalie woes would have a negative impact there.

"Sorry this triggered you"
"If you get this angry when someone disagrees with you"

It appears you're trying to elicit an emotional response out of me for a back and forth that's seemed (atleast to me) somewhat civil.

You're the one who can't seem to accept that we disagree. What's the big deal? We agree the EDM goalie was better tonight, I just don't think that it was much of a gap. So sue me.

Here's my question with adding a top 6 winger

1. Where do you play them?
2. Who comes out? Thornton's my pick, but how does the team respond to that?

Here's my question - until we fix our goalie issues, what's the point of adding a winger?

I'm not sure.. but if I am to rate the older players in terms of contribution, it would be

Spezza >> Simmonds > Jumbo

They'll have to address the elephant in the room at some point.

I believe it was a big enough gap to be the difference in the game. No anger or triggering needed :sarcasm:

We're going to have one new top 6 F and 2 NHL goalies going into the playoffs. Freddy or better than 2021 Freddy will be goalie #2.

Jumbo was painfully useless tonight. Going the route of Vesey - slowly playing himself out of the lineup.

I'm pretty sure it's a big ???????? which is why I wouldn't spend on rentals to put us over the top.
Rangers traded brenden Lemieux for a 4th. Dubas couldn’t beat that for a young physical player. I’m questioning this guy right now. He better have a move up his sleeve. That’s unacceptable we could make that trade for that player.

Thornton is terrible now, so slow! He should not be in the line up.

Robertson should be there in his spot.

I'm torn, we seem to be playing well enough to win with just average goaltending. I don't mind addressing goaltending if that's the issue, but some of that would depend on injuries. Was Fred's injury a bigger issue than we think which could excuse his poor play? How hurt is Campbell?

I'm not opposed to adding players (or goalies), but I wouldn't move a key piece personally. I don't see the need to justify that cost. Second rounder+ should grab us a second line guy this deadline or a 1B

Our team defense was incredible tonight, the Oilers top unit couldn't get anything going 5 on 5. Felt like every-time one of Drai/McDavid tried to get a pass through we had someone in the lane.

Add another top 6 forward and we're set. We need someone who can bury chances

I don't know about a top six. I don't mind the current top six as it sits now, especially with Hymans ability to move up and down the lineup. Yes, it places expectations on Gachenyuk. We can't solve it all without Cap space.

I'd like Leafs to get a solid, defensive minded forward who is willing to drive the net and throw his body around. It will be the depth, rolling one line after another, that will provide offense come playoffs. When other teams can't match up because you can provide any look you want, it's a big advantage. Simmonds hasn't caught his form yet, he should be a net presence come post-season.

Read opinions from non-homer hockey fans when speaking about the Leafs, the opinions remain eerily similar: "they will just be run over come playoffs", "they will go silent and shrink once the playoffs start", "another wasted regular season for the Leafs once playoffs begin".

This reputation is well deserved. This is a year in which they must shake this. I suggest that gamers are always in high demand once playoffs begin, Leafs will probably overpay slightly, but, at least it will be with purpose.

Wherever Dubas can improve, he should do so at the expense of future draft picks. I wouldn't place a scoring forward alone as their primary concern however. If that's his second, or even third move (assuming he can even get one trade to fit), I believe it would be the more optimum prioritization.

he was actually a pretty decent Jr player, does he only just fight now?
No he was getting 10 mins a game and not used right there. Moved for a fourth from LA. Which is a early 4th. Dubas could beat that one. He gets on pucks and plays two way hockey. Dubas screws us again i swear I’m going to lose it.

How did Dubas screw us? If the Rangers wanted to trade him out west or away from the East, Dubas has no control over that.

Also, Lemiuex has been terrible this year, and not from a result of being used poorly.

Right? He hasn’t done a thing except for being physical and he just lost his roster spot as quickly as Morin made him lose a chunk of his hair.

Why not both? I'd be fine at acquiring someone like Scott Laughton from Philly, from what I've seen he fits that very well. But looking at last year I found our biggest problem to be finishing. We had an abundance of chances against CBJ but couldn't cash in. Something similar is happening right now, we're playing great but the puck isn't finding its way into the back of the net. Getting another scorer to finish could potentially help a lot. Plus, with adding a top 6 forward we put Hyman down on the third line which has feasted and provides the depth scoring we need come playoff time. Mikehyev-Engvall-Hyman use the kind of size playoff teams need imo, very hard to knock off the puck during the cycle and defensively responsible too. If we're able to somehow swing a way where we get a top 6 forward (probably through double retention) and Scott Laughton I'd be ecstatic.

I don't know where Kerfoot fits in all of this though, he's probably the odd man out and someone we deal if we make a couple of moves.
