Those aren't the type of players you lose when you're in a cap crunch because the players you use to replace them also have to be paid, so you don't save much money. You have to look at the group of players a tier above that.

You save a million on each of those bottom 6 players you choose to let go of or trade when you bring someone up from within. Kopitar, Doughty, Quick.....you don't trade those guys to get within the threshold. Stoll, Williams, Richards, MAYBE Voynov/Muzzin/Martinez/Regher are the players you look to trade/let go for more cap space.

Lombardi always gives existing Kings the benefit of the doubt before replacing them. You think of all a sudden he's going to let Clifford, Andreoff and Nolan walk? Guess you haven't been following Lombardi for that long.

Yet he should trade Richards? isn't he an existing King?

And didn't he let Fraser walk?

How do you reckon you save a million on each of those? The players mentioned were Clifford, Nolan, Andreoff and Jones. Cliffy costs one million, Nolan 700k, Andreoff is at league minimum, Jones it at league minimum. There is little to no money to be saved from moving those players after you start paying their replacements.

not to mention scuds and Williams. DL has done a great job keeping the cup winning team together but some times changes are out of his control.
Richards is in his control

For some reason there's a certain someone in this thread that has a serious hate on for Mike Richards, even though he's been one of the Kings most consistent forwards this season and did everything Dean asked of him in the off season.

Yep...I would be okay with this thread if he was playing horribly, but the guy has been one of our consistent centers so far.

Some people are blind to what he's done on the ice this season. But let me post the response before it gets posted - what about the Kings cap situation in 2019?!?

See, I think you are guilty of judging his season this year based on what he did last season (when he was arguably the worst player on the team).

Is he better than last season? Certainly.

Is he anything more than a bottom six center? The numbers say no.

Is he worth his contract? No.

Again, if you guys want to hype up Kopitar as the best defensive center in the game (and I think he is too) based largely on advanced metrics, you can't look the other say at Mike Richard's awful metrics, to go along with another rough start offensively.

If Mike Richards is awful defensively, as the numbers the last three years show, and isn't able to contribute much offensively as the numbers these past two seasons seem to indicate, then what exactly is he, a 4th line energy player?

He is basically an overpaid third line center now, that is what the numbers say.

Kind of like what Stoll was, four/Five years ago. Kings are rolling with it atm.

That is a fair description.

I just find it funny how some are hyping some kind of career renaissance this season just because he isn't the worst player on the team again, when the truth is he has been pretty marginal to start the year.

Truth is , If I was GM.

I would have bought out Richards, then let Stoll go to UFA this coming off-season, Also RR.

Williams is a tougher choice, A-Mart as well.

The Kings need fresh productive bodies in the bottom six. Clifford,Richards,Stoll,Nolan,Andy. All need to be gone.

Between Richards/Stoll/Clifford/RR, that's around 13 million of cap space cleared.

But, since Richards is still here, much more difficult to move and be free and clear. Probably stuck with the guy.

Few, if any, are saying there's a career renaissance going on. People are saying Richards is playing better than plenty of the players being added into the thread. I see strong defense of players like Andreoff, Nolan even Stoll, yet Richards is getting tossed under the bus by some.

No one is saying Richards is back to his point per game form, they are saying its ridiculous to hold Richards to one standard and Stoll et al. to another.

Richards has been one of the better Kings forwards this season, he deserves some kudos for it.

I think the reasoning behind that is Richards is being paid more than the other players you mentioned combined. It's fair to hold him to a higher standard because of his paycheck, it's just the reality of being a cap team.

That being said, I'm encouraged by his play this season but I'm also cautious about declaring him to be anything this early. He was probably our best forward for the first 20 games of last season, we all know what followed. We're just gonna have to wait and see, hopefully his summer preparations pay off.

I agree he should be playing to a higher standard than those guys. The thing is he is playing better than those guys. You read this thread though and you'd think otherwise.

I'm just stoked the Kings have him locked up for the next 5 years! Seriously with some of the teams complete lack of center depth in this league the Kings are lucky to have a center of his caliber locked up long term.

As far as the numbers go... I don't really expect much if any production when Richards is playing with Clifford/Nolan or when he gets bumped up and plays with King/Brown.

Most of the complaining seems to be centered around the cap and people realizing that if AMart resigns around 4M some guys will be moving on after this year.
