I really can't wait to see if the Kings get away with the 1.3M cap hit for 5 years. If it doesn't work out in the Kings favor, it opens up a big o'l can o' worms.

I would read a Dean Lombardi book anyday. Problem is, like George R.R. Martin, will he be able to write that much before he runs out of time?

He better include that story about flipping out at the Canadian border when Hextal gave him an update on Pushkarov.

The size of his autobiography would make "War and Peace" look like a dime store novel.

"Hex commands so much respect that even a Russian like Pushkarev can appreciate what he stands for," Lombardi said.

"The Kings put forward Marty Murray on waivers. He had two assists in 19 games this season.... The Kings could have interest in goaltender Sean Burke, who was waived by Tampa Bay."

It was dark times, Harry. Dark times.

That was the season of Barry Brust and Yutaka Fukufuji. Good times...

Never heard this one but it sounds fantastic

"Hex is down there and I call him and I'm losing my patience," Lombardi said. "I'm in Western Canada, waiting in this huge line to cross the border and I'm yelling into the phone, 'Get him out of here. I don't want him around our players anymore.'

"I'm out of my car and I'm just screaming. The border guard is looking at me and wants to go through my trunk now. He was ready to frisk me, people are beeping their horns behind me and all I hear in my ear is Hex saying, 'Calm down, I'll take care of this.'

This would've been hilarious to watch waiting in the car next to him.

Nothing worse than seeing a Kings prospect in net and immediately wondering what the hell the scouts were looking at. That happened a lot. As for Richards, there were quite a few people who were afraid to play against him and said this would come back to haunt the Kings. It should be crystal clear now this guy could give a crap less about playing hockey. You could fit his excitement and passion for hockey inside of a thimble. Didn't get a contract, didn't get a PTO, didn't get a whiff of the NHL as the season starts today.

I'm telling you guys the owners are going to go after the guaranteed contracts in the next CBA, and Richards will be Exhibit A. An organization has to be allowed to cut a player that is no longer interested in performing on the ice.

To put it bluntly, you, sir, couldn't be more wrong. The Kings and absolutely nobody else, traded for Mike Richards and his contract and then proceeded to win 2 Stanley Cups in 4 years. Whether Mike Richards ever plays another period of hockey in the NHL does not change that. And, as far as his passion and excitement for hockey goes, let's once again go down the list of his rings- Memorial Cup (Canadian Junior Hockey champion), Calder Cup (American Hockey League champion), Olympic gold medal and 2 (count them) Stanley Cups; am I missing anything? Not many players, dead or alive, can equate to that and if that demonstrates a lack of excitement and dedication to the game, then I want more players on my team like that.

Like me, you, and just about everybody else, have absolutely no idea what's going on with Mike Richards so let's try and cut the personal attacks- we all get it.

Hopefully they would just take the amount for the settlement, say $10M (just a guess), and divide it by the number of years left on the deal, five, to determine the cap penalty until the deal would have expired.

That may be but there'll be a boat full of front end bonuses on player signings. And could you please reference a source which indicates that Mike Richards is "no longer interested in performing on the ice" as you suggest?

While it's entirely possible he's lost his passion for the game, I wouldn't jump to conclusions about the bolded. Lets not forget that there are still a whole lot of millions hanging in the balance, and I'm not sure that signing with another team would be such a great idea for Mike until this is settled.

Geez- I figured it had to go either one way or the other to stay within the terms of the CBA- maybe I'm wrong (again). If the Kings get away with a lower cap hit than that provided by the normal buy-out clause with this process, then there'll be a lot of other teams in future using the termination clause to get out from under, so to speak. If so, good on the Kings although, particularly without cause, I still don't like treating players (any player) that way.

You missed his entire point. No one is talking about 2012 when Richards was a big part of the team.

There were some hear who argued that Richards should be retained after 2014 because if we bought him out he would sign with Anaheim or Chicago and haunt us which is laughable to think now. Tikk is 100% correct that Richards is done as an NHL player, he couldn't even get camp invite or a 1 year deal for 800k. I still think many here just don't grasp how horrible Mike Richards was his final two years in LA. He was basically Brad Chartrand with an all-star name and all-star contract. Actually that's not even fair to Chartrand, he was atleast defensively responsible.

If MR wants to keep playing hockey (and who knows if he does) it will very likely be in some place like Germany or Switzerland.

Doesn't seem likely IMO.
I think either LA will have the cap penalty they would have if they used a buy out on Richards, but Richards would get paid less than he would have with a buy out (most likely)

or

LA will get the cap penalty that comes with the termination, but Richards gets paid something less than he would have via buy out (not as likely)

IF LA gets no relief from this whole termination deal I will be pissed. Why go through it instead of just buying him out?

Shouldn't you have a rock solid case to pursue this route?

The whole thing is a balls up.

Loyal to a fault.

I think they will get some relief. Even if the cap penalty is the same as a normal buy out they may not have to pay as much in actual dollars. May not be a big deal to you or me, but it's something.
