Ouch. But he's just unlucky that he's going to double the next worse
+/- of any other defenseman on his team for the 5th time in 6 years.

-90 for the career, that's a lot of bad luck. At that pace he's due to get struck by lightning on a clear day anytime now.

The more he gets talked up the more I like Franson (as well as Petry) as Voynov insurance but the asking prices for these guys is ridiculous. It's not worth the upgrade on McBain if these teams are going to try to fleece us, especially IF Voynov comes back, because then not only do we lose the traded assets, we will lose a roster player immediately to waivers/trade and NO ONE will be doing us a favor to help us get cap compliant at that point.

I hope we get neither player to be honest. I've heard a few times Franson is a 'me first' type and isn't the best in the locker room. Some of that dates back to his time in Nashville, so maybe he's changed, but I'd debate it.

Petry is just terrible. Not sure why people seem to think he's a good D-man. He's all hype little substance. The lone D-man on Edmonton I like is Mark Fayne, but his cap hit of $3.625 million is just to high.

Well I'm looking at Franson as specifically a rental for a boost to the PP and a guy that can at least sort of fill Voynov's hole on the 2nd pairing since McBain can't reliably because that would move Marty back down to the third pairing. Ditto on Petry.

Petry plays a simple game with a good first pass and mobility considering the **** show in edmonton he does some very good things, posts great advanced stats considering his usage, and would be in a greater position to succeed on a 2nd pairing with another solid d-man instead of carrying the load. He gets underrated because he's playing as their #1 most nights. He also got posterized by Reilly but that's a different story  He's a good compliment to Regehr imo.

I don't think either guy is great, don't get me wrong, but as far as affordable, you could do a LOT worse. Like sit on McBain.

I really don't want to give-up much of anything for a pure rental, I don't think this current team has shown they are worthy of that yet

I have no problem giving up a package for a player on the last year of their current deal, because Dean did it last year. However, it would have to be a specific scenario.

Exactly. Polak, Franson, etc. is a waste of time. None of those depth D types are going to propel this team into sudden contention.

Unless the Kings win like nine in a row throughout the rest of February, I still think Dean should just cut his losses and sell.

That's the thing, it's not besides the point. While Petry doesn't usually get beat like that, he still gets beat a lot and he seems to just brain farts out there. Rushes plays that don't need to be, seemingly tossing the puck away on what should be easy plays, he's just has a baffling goof up per game it seems.

I don't like plus-minus as a stat for use on what a player's issue might be since it's more of a team stat, but when you are worst on the entire team it does say something.

It IS beside the point when you point out it doesn't happen frequently. Regehr got posterized by Tarasenko earlier this year. **** happens when you log minutes on defense. I'm not seeing what you're seeing on the gaffes though either, like I said he's far from perfect, but when the alternative is rolling McBain out as if he's Voynov, a guy like Petry is a large upgrade especially at even strength.

I hear you on the plus/minus, I do, but you're ignoring the other stuff, facing the toughest competition, playing the most minutes, and still faring well possession/corsi-wise despite being on a godawful dumpster fire team. Guarantee the guy leaves Edmonton and heads to Detroit this offseason and everyone goes "whoa, Petry is really good, lol stupid Edmonton" even though they've been pointing that out all along. He's just miscast as a top guy.

Edit: and let me be clear because the few posts following mine above seem to have misread me, I'm not advocating we go after these guys hard or anything, but if you can give up a 3rd-4th or even a conditional pick for the upgrade, and you feel confident in this team, I think you have to do it.

Once a game isn't frequent? That's awfully frequent in my eyes.

Sounds a lot like Muzzin these days.

That's right, I was looking at the wrong category. Congrats to Jack on going triple digits in the minus category.

-26 through how many games on a mediocore blue jackets team isn't that bad.
He plays a fair bit for them too does he not?
not sure what any of this has to do with Richards

Dont listen to the talk. Toronto stats guys pad stats more then any other teams. Look at their home stats in all categories compared to their away stats. Quite the disparity.

Franson has great offensive skills and a fantastic shot. He's not as physical as the make him out to be, he's soft as butter for his size. His foot speed sucks and unless he's playing sheltered 3rd pairing minutes he gets exposed often. While Id prefer him over McBain or Schultz, the asking price for him in a trade is not worth doing it. Also, he wants $5+ which will be a bad contract in years to come plus we dont have the room under the cap. Thats besides the fact every single contract negotiation he's a holdout.

As I pointed out again above--this is pretty much exactly what I said.

Maybe I'll add that the mere fact that Lombardi HASNT done anything to upgrade that spot galvanizes the belief that Voynov WILL be back...because we can't roll McBain out as his replacement and pretend we'll get results. THAT is where Petry/Franson would come in handy, but again, not at the disgusting prices that are apparently being asked.

Sekera, you win! Come on down and raise that Cup!
