The extra 30% Richards will be making playing in the AHL should help cover the costs of meals at Applebees for awhile.

So the Kings play better for the rest of the season, make the playoffs, Richards gets called back up, they win the Cup again, and Brown gives it to Richards first. No playoff records set or broken by the Kings this year. Just a sappy Hollywood ending.

That would be awesome.

ESPN might even do a story on it. How Mark Ronalds was sent down by the Kings and made a legendary come back and led the team to glory.

Mersch/Richards/Auger. Mike won't have to worry about creating any space.

That would be an interesting line, wonder who the Monarchs want to see play with Mike.

Don't see where the dollars come from for both.

This contract is going to crush this team for a couple of years, hopefully they can get some young kids to step in for cheap like TT and TP did, but as long as they are paying 5.75 to a fourth line center or 4.8 in dead space it's going to be tough to add anyone from outside the organization.

Vermette was the only 2nd/3rd center I could think of at the time. I've seen Brandon Sutter mentioned but I just don't see why the Pens would trade him.

What's life in AHL like for NHL star?

"It's a shock to see him go down," said Redden, who during his heyday in Ottawa was one of the top blueliners in the world. "For me, I wasn't feeling good going into training camp that year [September 2010], and it was obviously discouraging when it [the demotion to the AHL] happened. Just to have your name in that light for that reason, it was tough, it wasn't fun at all.

"But for me, it was also a breath of fresh air. Things were going sideways in New York, so I viewed it as maybe an opportunity to go somewhere else eventually."

Instead, Redden played two seasons in the AHL. Talk about humbling.

Outside of the money that Richards is still going to be making, demotions like this are rare obviously, and I imagine he must feel weird. Almost like having to repeat a year in school. The move doesn't save much on the cap for the Kings, and he's not just going down to the AHL for a weekend after coming back from an injury. He's just sort of...there...now.

Richards will be in the AHL till he becomes a productive player again.

Agree, and I don't see that happening in time for the playoffs. I would be pleasantly surprised if it did happen by mid-April, but I don't think Sutter or Lombardi is counting on it.

Monarch game in 4 hours, is he scheduled to play tonight?

CNS tweeted that Toronto General Manager Dave Nonis is supposed to be at the game tonight to scout Mike Richards. I don't know, if Mike didn't like the media in Philly, I doubt he'll love the 'gentle media' in Toronoto, should a trade occur. He often seems a little shell-shocked when surrounded by a throng of reporters, though he seems fine one-on-one.

That was an interesting Wade Redden interview. Thanks for linking it, 7824. I think though that Richards knows a number of players who were Black Aces. Plus, he knows Schultz and I would imagine, Biz, probably.

I honestly hope he does well. He's really a nice guy. Quiet but very nice in person.

Hate to see him go through this because he's one of my favorite Kings player. But I think it will benefit him in the long run. He just needs to work hard and kick a lot of ass.

Amen. I think everybody can't wait to get him back.

Haven't watched much of Richards play since leaving Philly, but how is it that so many people are completely writing him off when he is 29 years old?

Hearing a lot of things like attention to fitness and lack of work ethic but again, it's not like he's a 35 year old.

According to the Fan590 out of T.O. In their most recent radio update, Dave Nonis will be in Manchester tonight to have a look at the Monarchs, more specifically Richards.

The story was party of their 5pm update package so I can't provide a proper link.
