Pretty much.

A year in the AHL wouldn't hurt the guy. But the Kings need a cheaper third pairing than A-Mart/Greene.

I would suspect Lombardi is pitching a third pairing role( at least a shot at it).

Reilly would start in Chicago, they need help badly on D. Especially cheaper help. The Hawks are probably the only team that can guarantee Reilly a roster spot. The Kings do have Forbort/Miller that are close.

The Hawks have nothing on their third pairing (of worth), are cap strapped, and the their AHL team is thin on the defense side.

Does he really think he should make any team, without any pro experience? If that was the case, why wouldn't he have stayed in Lumbus instead of going the FA route. Lumbus sucks on defense and you'd think a spot would be waiting for him the moment he left school.

Exactly. He's a decent prospect, that's about it. He's likely at best Alec Martinez-level of skill. But, he's the new shiny toy so of course posters want to make radical changes to offer a college kid a guaranteed roster spot.

If by "radical changes" you are referring to trading Martinez, that might need to be done regardless. He floundered on the second pairing last year badly and is paid too much as a third pairing defenseman. The Kings don't have the luxury to pay Martinez that money if he's not playing quality second pairing minutes with the cap situation.

If we are worried about cap hits, Martinez shouldn't even be in the discussion until Richards and Brown are gone. At best it can be argued Martinez is slightly overpaid. Those two ate up 17% of our cap and produce very little for it.

Seems like every year there's "a guy" everyone wants, this year is no different.

He would be nice but i wouldn't guarantee him anything. He starts the season in the ahl and improves his defense He gets a call up when performance merits one. Forbert and Miller come up before him So unless injuries occur he would stay until next year imo

Richards is gone, everyone knows that. Brown is a whole different ball of wax and will be given another year. The defense is getting overpriced and the expendable piece is Martinez.

Moving Martinez would be the result of signing Sekera. We all know Brown isn't going anywhere prior to this season, and that Richards is likely to be bought out.

You can keep pointing out what Brown did or didn't do over the last couple of seasons, but the simple truth is the Kings have no one to replace him, and his trade value is so low due to his contract that whatever he returned in a trade wouldn't replace him.

It's so obivious. Of course, everything hinges on re-signing Sekera.

You get the cap space for Sekera by buying out Richards. You actually get more by buying out Richards than trading Martinez.

Still don't get how people would just let this guy waltz in and simply step onto the roster. Meanwhile Forbort and Miller have paid their dues in the AHL and just won a Calder Cup. I'd give Forbort or Miller a spot before this kid without hesitation.

I just want an asset for free.

Not to mention there's no proof Reilly's even any better than Forbort or Miller.

There is no proof true. But I watched every USA game last month and I was blown away by his skill level. He is certainly a very uniquely skilled player and has tremendous skating. He is super skinny and not very physical, so who knows how his skill will translate. But I don't think he's the flavor of the month or anything. Dude is legit and I'd be thrilled if we got him

I think the Kings are looking at Rielly as a back up plan to Sekera (and Voynov). With so many unknown scenarios, and one completely out of their control (Voynov). I think the Kings want as many players as possible to be able to use.

Now, Rielly probably knows this. And it's why he'll probably sign with Chicago. But that fact he's still considering the Kings, says a lot about the organization, and the reputation they now have. The Kevin Gravel situation is a great example. He was in the same situation as Reilly. But due to the Kings reputation for producing defenseman. He didn't sign with any other NHL teams. Instead signed an AHL deal with Manchester. One year later, he's got his name on the Calder Cup, and the Kings award him with a 2 year ELC for max dollars with a signing bonus. That goes a long with players.

It's not even about dues!! The college game is so much different than the pros! It has to do with the systems, and the flow, and the control of play. Anybody who ever say Chay Genoway play at North Dakota would say that there's no way he doesn't make the show, and when you watch Forbort at ND, you wonder how he'll ever make the show. But.... Hear me!!!! The PRO game is different!!! And, to think a couple weeks at the World, where chemistry and systems are murky, well, that fine, Reilly assimilated well!! But to suggest he still doesn't need to possibly develop is absurd!!! It's like saying we knew a young DD didn't need any development!! Well, he proved us wrong, but..... Come on, it's just not that simple now is it???

He would have to earn it, no doubt. This is Sutter we're talking about.

I think if anyone is gone on defense, it's Voynov. He put the team in a tough spot last year. On top of that, we all know how Mr. Anshutz is morally. After Stoll's actions, I doubt he wants the public to associate the Kings with drug peddlers and alleged domestic abusers.

Yea, those are harsh statements, but public perception (if they even care) is different than what we perceive on these boards as Kings fans.

I'd be thrilled to get him too. I'm not thrilled about giving him a roster spot right away.

I don't know what this kid's intentions are. I have a feeling if he wanted a guaranteed spot in the NHL next year, I think he would've signed with Chicago the minute they won the cup this year. I mean we all know how Lombardi is with players paying their dues and we obviously know how to develop defenseman, so I have a feeling that he's looking for what's best for his career. Maybe I'm looking too far into it and maybe his agent is just making sure to see both sides of the coin or maybe its just wishful thinking on my part. I see a fit if he's willing to pay his dues in the AHL or we could trade Amart and give him sheltered minutes next to Greene.

I can't see him not being in the line up with all the pursuers out there. He wants to play in the NHL and has paid his dues in college.

I trust in management and the development team enough that if they think he is a better option than Forbort or Miller then he probably is.

Voynov is already not coming back at the beginning of the year no matter what happens in his case.

Signing Reilly could free the Kings to shop AMart I guess. If Voynov comes back you slot him into AMart's spot.

I'm surprised that both of you guys missed it.

I don't know Reilly's worth more than Forbort or Miller myself. But obviously, Kings management does. By all counts, they put the full-court press on the kid while he was in Los Angeles.

Clearly, they see something in this kid that we don't.

I agree with Ron. So many here are like well, he's not that great. His ceiling is such and such. And you all may be right. But the fact that Kings management is really giving a go here tells me they value him more than some of you. Frankly, I'm going with their track record of evaluation. But it's all moot when he signs with Chicago soon anyway :sarcasm:.
