Crazy that Valimaki was a waiver wire pickup and is 9th on the list.

Valimaki and Tolvanen are two players we could have had from the waiver wire that are good players. Kasperi Kapanen, Vrana were others available for nothing.

Oh well at least we got Gurianov, Montembault, Kovacevic, and Pitlick has been useful.

Its worth pointing out that Montreal actually has two productive D-man over that timeframe. Matheson is 9th P/GP, but Barron is 34th.

Among D-men this season, Matheson and Barron are tied at 26th for p/60.

The D group still needs a lot of work and development, but you can see HuGo's plan to develop and augment what they inherited (in terms of players and prospects) and its promising. I did not expect in October that I would have optimism about Montreal's potential D-core in a few years.

Montembault has been top-10 in GSAA/60 for most of the season and was a waiver pickup too.

I was very surprised we passed on Valimaki, still wish we would've took a chance

It's pretty crazy we *dont* have to sign any FA D this summer lol.. christ even Wideman is under contract next year..

So trade Eddy and hope Xhekaj shoulder isn't busted up too much for next year
Matheson-Savard should hold us over 1 more year before we need the REAL #1RD
Guhle LD2 is the spot for him right now

Indeed! The Habs' roster next year could in principle have 8 defencemen signed for a collective 16M - likely even less, once Edmundson is traded.

And the leeway under the cap generated by such a low-cost D must be optimised better than simply compensating for the overpaid/redundent wingers up front. Let's hope the Habs management is creative in that regard, not unlike with the Monahan trade last year.

Wow! He's been amazing offensively and he's obviously very good defensively, how else could he be a +6 on this shit show.

He's playing like an elite #1 let's see if that continues next season.

With a better supporting cast Matheson will only get better. Talk about a great, transformational trade.

It's going to be interesting to see how they do the D pairings. I like that all of Matheson, Guhle, and Barron can skate the puck all the way from the back of our net into the offensive zone.

Might be nice to have one of them on each of the D pairs.

Absolutely, and it seems that it's the direction our GM is headed with dman. I'm a fan of their choices but you can tell they have a "type" of d, just like MB loved the big, slow stay at home dman.

Flashes of brilliance with the puck to go along with flashes of "Oh I didn't see you there." Put it all together Mike it's obvious you see the game...

sometimes.

He's had a really excellent season. I was bullish on the guy but didn't expect anything like this. Very nice piece to have in place for the medium term future, and he complements Guhle really well in a roster construction sense.

What's also impressive is how quickly Matheson has assumed the role as one of the team's leaders. You can see the respect that both the coaches and his teammates have for Matheson. Nothing says respect more than being relied on to play 26 to 30 minutes a game. What a great trade. Here's another prediction: at the next best on best competition, Matheson will be in the mix for a place on Team Canada's defence.

I really look forward to seeing how many points he can put up over a full season. I really hope he can stay healthy.

This season he really had the green light to go out there and be creative, even if he made mistakes. It's not like we were making the playoffs. It would be great if Mailloux gets the opportunity to do that at some point. Probably more in the AHL than the NHL, given we should be good by the time he's 24, 25.

Pretty impressive season all things considered. If he’s able to have this type of production over a full season next year, his value league wide would be astronomical considering his contract and what would essentially be 3 great seasons in a row.

Yeah, a player like Xhekaj provides the physicality we had in the Eddie-Petry pairing. We'll see how many bruisers/big rangy guys they add to the dcore to go along with the skilled guys. Kovacevic and Struble are candidates.

Arber is no slouch either. He doesn't have the mobility or ease of the others but he can certainly go when he has to.

There really is nothing to dislike about his compete level his leadership or his personality. What a great pick up a local guy who speaks excellent french.
It's amazing how many kids I grew up with who learned to speak excellent french through sport. School had absolutely nothing to do with it other than to highlight the slang. i wonder what happened in PJ Stock's case. :sarcasm:

P. U. on many fronts.

BTW people this was meant for the GDT and not Mike Matheson although I think he was on the ice for the sequence I was commenting on.

But won't he be in his fifties when they hold the next best on best?

I think he'll be our Alex Pietrangelo. He reminds me of him for some reason. Just finds himself everywhere on the ice.

I'm inclined not to write off Matheson so soon. I realize his next contract will be in his 30s. I have no idea whom to get rid of among the young defensemen. That said, if Matheson manages 50+ point-season(s), especially through several years, he is probably worth a very good forward in a trade, to a team with a glut of good forwards and holes to fill in its backend. Hopefully the team is rid of a few boat-anchor forwards by then.
