Same guy playing in a purely zone defense, for a « gring em up boyz » coach would look completely out of place. I have only been watching highlights since december but he’s in most of them.
What is it exactly that the Penguins preferred Petry over him? They just wanted another member to their geriatric club? If it’s just handedness, that’s silly. You’re basically just trading for a worse, older, more expensive Matheson
I know matheson was always great skater, but I never used to see some of the he does in habs uniform..... The way he makes an extra move at the Blueline..... The spinoramas.... It's almost as Marty just gave him a green light for him to be him.
Its a kind of green light that perhaps he never got anywhere else, or maybe he was always worried about how that would affect his ice time in other places.
Yes, I think he's trying new things, and sometimes making mistakes, but srillbtrying them.
The thing is, at some point he's going to have know when to do those things and when not to do them and make those mistakes. He can't turn the puck over the way he still does sometimes when it's time for us to contend.
I think the brisebois like brain cramps are inherent in his game. If he didn't have those, he'd be an all star in this league lol.
But hey, it's all about fun at the end of the day, and I like watching matheson play hockey.
He's growing on me rapidly.I did not have much of an opinion on Matheson when we traded for him but watching him play now i can say that he is the real deal. Massive steal vs Petry. Next couple of years should be good with emerging young talent around him.

Matheson +7, pacing to 59 points and +15, cap hit $4.875M 3 more years to age 32 - 24.2 min per gmNow I see why Letang was upset when he was traded.
Thank you Ron!
True. The thing is, Matheson has active feet, an active stick, and a combative approach that enables him to correct over half of his mistakes. He exemplifies the MSL style.Yes, I think he's trying new things, and sometimes making mistakes, but srill trying them.
When you can skate anything is possible.Matheson +7, pacing to 59 points and +15, cap hit $4.875M 3 more years to age 32 - 24.2 min per gm
K. Letang -10, pacing to 50 points and -16, cap hit of $6.100M 5 more years to age 41 - 24.7 min per gm
J. Petry +1, is pacing to 41 points and +2, with cap hit $6.250M 2 more years to age 37 - 22.2 min per gm
There are only 12 defencemen in the league who are on track to beat both of Matheson's 82 game numbers. And 5-on-5 only 9 guys.
We seem to have ourselves a first-pairing D for the first time since 2017.

Teams trade that level of skating at their peril. This time, it was us who was the beneficiary of such unintended largesse. Now I see why Letang was upset when he was traded.
Thank you Ron!
With Matheson now playing almost 28 minutes a game, it would appear that MSL also enjoys watching Matheson play.I agree.
I just hope over the next few years of having the green light to experiment, he can somehow figure out when to pull off his outrageous moves and when to keep it simple - and one day be at the all start game.
It’s a year for trying things. Worry about what works next year, and consistency the year after.Yes, I think he's trying new things, and sometimes making mistakes, but srillbtrying them.

Petry's mind was not on the game for sure with his wife and kids crying to get him back in the USA because of the villainous Covid measures in that socialist run Canada....I was annoyed at Petry for being completely unprofessional last year but that led to a trade for Matheson. Happy that we got a local guy who wants to be here, is a class act and is thriving even if the team is not competitive.
I'd much rather Guhle on the 2nd pairing where he would have a better chance of really dominating his ice time as opposed to going up against the best of the best and being ok.Has Matheson played on the right side much during his career? Do people think he could be effective there? It would be interesting to go into next year with Guhle and Matheson on the top pair.
Assumng Ed is traded, nobody is added an no rookies graduate:
Guhle-------Matheson
Harris-------Barron
Xhekaj------Savard
Kovacevic
If Guhle is real good, maybe they do the Markov-Hamrlik or Weber-Petry thing and play the 2 best D on different pairs to have 48-50 minutes per night with one of them on the ice.Has Matheson played on the right side much during his career? It's pretty crazy we *dont* have to sign any FA D this summer lol.. christ even Wideman is under contract next year..I'd much rather Guhle on the 2nd pairing where he would have a better chance of really dominating his ice time as opposed to going up against the best of the best and being ok.
If Edmundson is traded I would probably go
Matheson - Savard
Guhle - Barron
and then have Xhekaj, Harris, Kovacevic rotate on the 3rd pair (Likely someone somewhere is injured so they all play and we have Wideman as the 7th guy)
