Petry was just done here, he didn't want to play for us anymore, that's why he was traded. Matheson just happened to be available and they went for him.

Let's hope Matheson can turn into a solid 2nd pair guy 5 on 5, who doesn't try to do too much.

Guhle can be our number 1.

Yeah Breezeby was unfairly maligned, but I still remember wanting to pull my hair out watching him cough the puck up at the opposing blue line on a semi regular basis.

Imagine if social media was a thing when he played?

Brisebois only wished he could skate like Matheson. I thought this was Matheson's most impactful game. Montreal surprisingly outplayed the Oilers 5 on 5 and one of the reasons was Matheson's dynamic play. Ask yourself how many defencemen in the league could create a great scoring opportunity when they're defending a 5 on 3? One of the most entertaining games of the year. Montreal is a great team to watch.

Crazy, I thought he was awful tonight, bumbled the puck all over the ice. One good play doesn't make a solid game. He turned over the puck quite a few times, and can't hit the net when it counts. Its funny how two people watch the same game and have two different takeaways, I really didn't care for him tonight.

Matheson needs to simplify his game. When tries to do too much he is the worst form of Brisebois. He can be a solid second pairing dman if he just relies on safe plays and his elite skating to move the puck.

He looked great in pre-season and looks like Breezeby atm.

Well he did hit the net as many times as all the other Montreal defencemen combined. And he played 27 minutes. I guess a player’s on ice performance, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Thought he had his best game of the year last night, lot of moments where his agilty created some good opportunities.

With him it will about finding ways to use his agility to make something out of nothing without turning the puck over by doing too much.

I'd like to see him cut out the needless turnovers, even if it means toning his game down and not making certain nifty plays that do work out.

Matheson is basically a left handed version of Jeff Petry.

He even looks like him lol, not sure if it's the stache but they're games are so similar.
Matheson bring us a good young player in trade. Future on left D is Xhekaj, Guhle, Hutson, Harris.

He just doesn't seem to have much consistency to his game.
I will take his highs as few of our other defencemen have the ability to attain such heights, let alone log the enormous amount of ice time this very underrated player does. Just think, he played 27 minutes against the most offensively dynamic team in the league. I just don't understand what people expect. But I guess everyone needs their whipping boy. Frankly, there isn't a team in the league that wouldn't take Matheson: today.

Do people still think he is the answer to our PP??

LMAO

Just wait they said. Hes bad and what did you expect? A 30 point Dman to fix our terrible PP? I cant believe St Louis thought the same at first and played him on the top unit as soon as he came esp considering it was starting to click. As soon as he joined, the PP has sank even faster than the Titanic

Playing him with Markov when neither could play defence made him look worse. Both learned.

Brisebois always looked bad because he was fairly big but not physical. He wasn’t always bad but watching him miss a poke check when he clearly needed to check was frustrating.

Decent offensive skills but just completely unable to keep the puck in at the blue line on the power play. Puck would come slowly along the boards and go right through him.

In a year where he’s had multiple injuries and hasn’t been able to get in rhythm, he’s on pace for 50 pts.

But sure, lay all the PP problems at his feet.

Who cares about his point Pace.

I'm talking about PP, where he's done nothing good. If anything more harm than good.

You're taking a ten-game sample and talking about an 82 game pace. I'd be surprised if he played more than 30 games by the end of the season.

When he was with the Pens he had a pretty sheltered role and never played as a number 1 they made him look decent last year but i think he turns the puck over way too much and overplays everything. Its great he skates so well end to end but who cares if its always a turnover? they should just play him on wing i think he has in the past just way too many mental mistakes. ;)

Does this guy look decent on the first PP unit? Surely one of the young guns will have grown enough offensive instinct to take the spot next year?

I don't know, but I like him.

I think he's definitely a top 4 d-men in a well built back end. But, the habs d is so young that there's no where for his flaws to hide.

Love the way he moves the puck.
Yeah I would really like to see what he brings when he isn't in and out of the lineup with injuries and can be insulated properly so is leading the second pairing instead of the first.

He's got good production but I'm not a fan of the player or the contract. I'd keep him over Edmundson though.
