meh, reminds me of Brisebois. I'll give him a month, he's bumbling the puck a lot right now but so is the rest of the blueline.
Brisebois carved out a good career and deserved more respect.
He was never a top pairing D and was played like one which exposed him.

Matheson has a ways to go to become as good as #43.

we're starting to see why Pittsburgh gave him up.

He needs to simplify his game sometimes in his own end - just get the puck up to the forwards instead of trying to make a fancy play. In the offensive zone I don't see Brisebois level offensive talent. But if he makes simple plays, we should have talented enough forwards for him to pick up points off of.

Also, I don't see him being a pp guy. And better now for him to focus on being good 5 on 5.

Lack of a proper training camp gives you that ! He was supposed to come back later.

They should stop scratching him, they are f***ing with his mind.
The guy, with all healthy vets ine the line up, was supposd to play at AHL level.... So, he should be happy to be at NHL level now.

You just proved my point, he's like Brisebois to a tee. Sloppy defensively, can put up points but comes with a risk/reward ratio you have to be comfy with, non physical can move the puck when not under pressure or turn it over, take your pick. Mike puts up almost the same points 27-30 and almost matches his PIM's perfectly. I know you are old enough to have watched Patrice play, he really was NOT that much different at all.

Agreed

The entire team not named Suzuki needs to learn to look left when they pass right or show “shoot” like MSL says. So predictable sometimes, they all get cut way too often. I like Xhekaj‘s swag walking the line.
Gallagher does it too ; he looks to the left and pass to right to the nearest player of the other team

To be fair Brisebois got a worse rap than he should have on those horrific Montreal teams
He really did. He endured too much hate. I met him in the Habs locker room years ago, gave me a signed stick with a nice note on the blade. Class act.

Sure but the way you said it it's like he was a major factor in swinging games results.

Marty is barely playing him, he got 11 minutes of ice time last night.
He is not the reason for the scoreline, but it's just interesting that you remove our "security guard" and we get skunked twice.
It's just a coincidence, is all I'm saying.

Kovacevic brings nothing more to the table and wont be here long term. He or Wideman should not be playing ahead of the 3 kids if there is no injury to 54,21,72

We gave him up because of his contract. He was actually really good here in a 3rd pairing role. I assume Montreal took him on in hopes of turning him into an asset later down the road.

As simple as that.

I think the idea was that he could become the next Jeff Petry, and obviously he's not that.

If that’s really what Montreal scouts thought of Matheson they should stab their eyes out.

Although I guess he could be Petry in a sense that he can’t play special teams and is an exceptional 5v5 goal scorer.

Petry was just done here, he didn't want to play for us anymore, that's why he was traded. Matheson just happened to be available and they went for him.

Brisebois only wished he could skate like Matheson. I thought this was Matheson's most impactful game. Montreal surprisingly outplayed the Oilers 5 on 5 and one of the reasons was Matheson's dynamic play. Ask yourself how many defencemen in the league could create a great scoring opportunity when they're defending a 5 on 3? One of the most entertaining games of the year. Montreal is a great team to watch.

Well many fans were hoping he'd be the #1 D/top pair guy here for years to come, not trade bait.

Do you think he can be good in a 2nd pair role, playing 20 minutes a night?

Petry was good on the PK for us.

Brisebois was a great hockey player, and I only really remember the telegraphed passes he’d get picked off in front of the hab net getting booed. He went on a streak of them at some point so much so the crowd would anticipate it and let him hear it… Then the way I remember the mtl talking heads picked it up and it became self-feeding. Even play by play coverage was so serious back then… Every commentator always sounded angry and worried haha

That crowd was still used to hall of fame defensemen; and would have imploded in the 1st 3 minutes of a modern habs game!
