I think it’s more likely Grubb’s comment was miscommunicatedThis is a Microsoft employee, aka a gamepass guy. The developers want money, gamepass wants buzz for gamepass.

Sales (and to a lesser extent reviews and sticking to a reasonable timeline) are a major factor in how bonuses are calculated. I can see how individual Devs would be mad if the gamepass system is undercutting them on bonuses depending on how MS calculates the revenue split from gamepass revenue with internal studios developers, whereas MS as a company could be happy with it overall. That could easily explain the disconnect between how people who work at the studio feel vs how Microsoft as a company feels, although at some point unless the formula leads to similar payments AAA titles that devs at Sony, Nintendo or major 3rd party studios get you will get a talent retention problem. Part of the reason people tolerated the crunch at studios like Naughty Dog or Rockstar is because they knew a massive check was coming 6 months after release. Starfield will be an interesting one, as I'm sure long-term employees are used to massive checks from Skyrim and Fallout for hitting sales targets, and not being on PS5 combined with Gamepass is going to dramatically reduce sales. This is a Microsoft employee, aka a gamepass guy. Its a bit of both from what I understand. More downloads equals more money but they pay to get it on gamepass in the first place.Do the developers get a lump sum check from Microsoft to have their stuff on GP or do they get a cut each time the title is downloaded?
I don't think anyone has any idea on how exactly that works for internal studios owned by MS, whose games tend to stay on gamepass forever so there is limited reason to ever buy it if you continue your subscription. Like a sizable upfront payment to a 3rd party indie developer like Supergiant could be huge especially if the game is beloved and gets sales after. The real thing I'm curious about is what it does for individual developers at MS's bonus structure. Part of the benefit of working for huge AAA teams with games that make massive sales is the evenutal massive bonus payments that come 6 months to a year after it's released generally based off of sales and reviews. Its a bit of both from what I understand. I thought it was a solid game but I can see where people might not like the setting (it's unabashedly Japan, like Yakuza or Persona) and the "gunplay", so to speak, isn't the smoothiest. Was on the road for a couple weeks - any first impressions of Ghostwire Tokyo?
I’ll still give it a shot at launch. Hoping for a somewhat smooth 30fps.Redfall takes up 77 gigs, for those interested.
My way too early impression 45 minutes in: Don't know if this is because of the low frames per second completely, but this doesn't feel like a next-gen experience. I really enjoy cartoony games like this, but the graphics seem lacklustre. You feel the low frames every second of the game. Combat and world feel cool. AI seems bad. Shooting an enemy with a handgun, and his friend right beside him doesn't even react/notice you.Redfall reviews looking rough. Disappointing. I’ll stick with some other games before checking it out.
Spencer's job is secure. The guys done way too good of a job.Microsoft needs to Starfield to deliver big or methinks the likes of Phil Spencer are out of jobs.
And while their games usually end up good long term, Todd Howard is the last person i'm trusting to put out something polished and functional at launch.
Perfect descriptor for it. I’ve played about 5 hours now and it’s extremely generic. If they fix the glitches it will be a fine, ordinary game that you can get some fun out of, but it won’t be at all memorable. Just another mediocre shooter, which is a shame. I really like sone of the ideas.Man Redfall looks painfully generic.
