Microsoft Xbox Discussion Part II

This is a Microsoft employee, aka a gamepass guy. The developers want money, gamepass wants buzz for gamepass.
Sales (and to a lesser extent reviews and sticking to a reasonable timeline) are a major factor in how bonuses are calculated. I can see how individual Devs would be mad if the gamepass system is undercutting them on bonuses depending on how MS calculates the revenue split from gamepass revenue with internal studios developers, whereas MS as a company could be happy with it overall. That could easily explain the disconnect between how people who work at the studio feel vs how Microsoft as a company feels, although at some point unless the formula leads to similar payments AAA titles that devs at Sony, Nintendo or major 3rd party studios get you will get a talent retention problem. Part of the reason people tolerated the crunch at studios like Naughty Dog or Rockstar is because they knew a massive check was coming 6 months after release. Starfield will be an interesting one, as I'm sure long-term employees are used to massive checks from Skyrim and Fallout for hitting sales targets, and not being on PS5 combined with Gamepass is going to dramatically reduce sales.

Its a bit of both from what I understand. More downloads equals more money but they pay to get it on gamepass in the first place.
I don't think anyone has any idea on how exactly that works for internal studios owned by MS, whose games tend to stay on gamepass forever so there is limited reason to ever buy it if you continue your subscription. Like a sizable upfront payment to a 3rd party indie developer like Supergiant could be huge especially if the game is beloved and gets sales after. The real thing I'm curious about is what it does for individual developers at MS's bonus structure. Part of the benefit of working for huge AAA teams with games that make massive sales is the evenutal massive bonus payments that come 6 months to a year after it's released generally based off of sales and reviews.

Friendly reminder Arkane passed on making another Dishonored title for this pile of shit.

Good going, dorks.

Really hilarious comment from ACG on the state of this game via the reddit review thread;

No but dude. Man. Ok so the game has a tendency to take the scopes from any weapon and apply them to the TOP of another weapon but only when zoomed in. So we spent an hour thinking that we had a special skill that was somehow giving us scopes on the handguns and shotguns and every other gun.

Then we had another one were random enemies wouldn't engage but it happened so often, we had to leap into skills to verify there wasn't something like that.

Honestly, so buggy it was actually physically confusing.

It's also hilarious to me how Dead Island 2, a game that was essentially in development hell for a decade came out in a actually functional, polished state and yet this game is a burning trash heap despite getting more cohesive resources.

Redfall reviews looking rough. Disappointing. I’ll stick with some other games before checking it out.
My way too early impression 45 minutes in: Don't know if this is because of the low frames per second completely, but this doesn't feel like a next-gen experience. I really enjoy cartoony games like this, but the graphics seem lacklustre. You feel the low frames every second of the game. Combat and world feel cool. AI seems bad. Shooting an enemy with a handgun, and his friend right beside him doesn't even react/notice you.

I think they can build on this game, and as I stated in the Jedi thread, most games don't launch ready... but this feels months away from a good game.

Really disappointed by Redfall. I’ll keep chugging along hoping to find some fun but I’m sure glad I didn’t pay $70 for this.

Microsoft needs to Starfield to deliver big or methinks the likes of Phil Spencer are out of jobs.

And while their games usually end up good long term, Todd Howard is the last person i'm trusting to put out something polished and functional at launch.

I hate the dishonored games so tbh Id rather they have made this. Just needs to see more polish. Gotta give it a chance. Day 1 patch im sure is gonna fix a bunch of the issues.

I actually think Redfall can be a good (probably not great) game, with some work. It has its flaws, aside from the performance, but there’s some enticing aspects of the game.

Still, a major disappointment for Xbox. They really needed this to be good.

Starfield being amazing is a must. Motorsport looks nice. Hellblade launching this year and being a great game would help a lot, too.

Man Redfall looks painfully generic.
Perfect descriptor for it. I’ve played about 5 hours now and it’s extremely generic. If they fix the glitches it will be a fine, ordinary game that you can get some fun out of, but it won’t be at all memorable. Just another mediocre shooter, which is a shame. I really like sone of the ideas.
