Vegas may not want to take a player like Grabner--who will become an UFA after one season of play for the expansion team.

They aren't going to be in a position where they get alot of good picks from teams, either.

Very few teams have this kind of "problem" where theres too many good guys to protect.

Like say Arizona, they're gonna protect the young good guys and the rest are average or mediocre movable parts, not much to choose from.

In a way it's ironic that Grabner is most likely playing himself off the team with the season he is having either by a trade or by the expansion draft.

MODs - below is posted here, as Grabner is currently a hot expansion draft topic, but maybe we should have an expansion draft thread at some point

Expansion draft is getting way to much attention.
LV can only take only one player from NYR,
Whether its Raanta, Grabner, Holden, Klein, Lindberg, Fast, Clendenning, Pirri or another, it wont materially impact NYR any more than typical off season changes

but here is a expansion draft question topic i am curious about,
(and which is why I included Clendenning above, which i am sure jolted some of you to be ready to correct me ...)

each team must expose a number players who meet requirements of
(1) the games played minimum over last 2 seasons and (2) signed for '17-18
[ NYR will need to resign 1 of Pirri, Fast, Lindberg, or acquire a signed F, before the exp draft]

but the expansion draft rules do NOT say that LV must choose from the exposed players who meet required conditions
https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-expansion-draft-rules/c-281010592

in fact note the 2d sentence here:
" * The Las Vegas franchise must select the following number of players at each position: 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.
* The Las Vegas franchise must select a minimum of 20 players who are under contract for the 2017-18 season. "

so Vegas is not required to take only players who meet the requirements regarding the minimum type of players that each team must expose
which seems to mean 2 other groups of players are also available

they could take a player under contract for '17-18 who has not met the minimum appearances threshold
(by my reading of CapFriendly, NYR have no additional players signed through '18 who are NOT on ELC's)
https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/rangers

but also, LV can draft up to 6 players who are unsigned,
who by definition are not among the required exposed players;
and these most likely will be RFA's who have been qualified

which seems to mean other NYR properties available to Vegas would include
(a) Pirri, Lindberg, and Fast, along with Clendenning, if sent QO, even if not yet resigned,
(b) other post-ELC prospects and properties, if RFA and sent Qualifying offer, such as : Skapski,Jensen, Paliotta, Puempel (unlikely to qualify Donnay, Hughes)

(c) I believe Hrivik, Hellberg, Brown cannot end up as RFA, but UFA (Group VI), they are over 25 with not enough NHL games

Why would be traded?

you trade him if his great season has a team greatly overpay,
say with a talented young player or a top 4 RHD

and the secondary part of package would need to be at least one regular forward, who would meet requirements to be one of the required exposed players for Vegas expansion draft

not saying NYR will get that offer,
just saying that's the type of offer that gets Gorton's attention to consider moving Grabner

but as i wrote earlier,
dont worry about the expansion draft,
LV can only draft one NYR player,
if its Grabner, we'll get over it ...

i'd actually rather have zero like Lisin than the career Korpi had

absolutely atrocious hockey player

I agree. But I'm not sure it will come to that. For that matter, I'm not sure Grabner would be selected.

I seriously doubt Grabner is traded before the deadline--the Rangers are no going to falling out of the playoff race and Grabner has been an intregal part of that success. Once the season is over, he has very little value--who is going to give up something significant for him, especially when they are going to have to protect him in the expansion draft or risk losing him and the assets used to get him.

I also agree with you Singin--not really sure why an expansion team looking to make a splash would pick a player who has scored more than 32 points once before the current season in his NHL career, is hitting thirty and will become a UFA after next season. Plus, there's always the question of whether Grabner would be nearly as effective on a team where he would be one of the veterans expected to lead both on and off the ice.

I love the guy and I hope he continues to play this way this season and next for the Rangers. But, he's a complimentary player who is amazing because he does so much with relatively little ice time. There's nothing to suggest that he would start scoring more if he got more ice time.

Those type of trades are hit or miss. Korpikoski was a solid bottom-6 forward and Lisin was a gamble. If it works out, great. If it doesn't, people often glorify what the player given up actually is

Wow, looking at Korpi's career stats, it seems like you're way over exaggerating.

He has among league worst possession effects at both ES and SH, wasn't physical, minimal to no offensive talent, yet for some reason he had a Tanner Glass effect on coaches

The worst kind of player.

Just curious how you get to Lisin being the better player. Clearly most of the NHL disagrees with you.

Lisin might have been "better" but he sucks too and i'm glad he's not on my hockey team

Some people still think korpi is good defensively for some reason. i couldn't tell you why
