Confirmed with Link: Messier leaves Rangers

So just to confirm, Messier was roundly given crap for having no experience as anything but player, then he leaves to grt experience ny running a program and people still give him crap? Tough crowd...

Still don't know why he felt he was entitled to the coaching position with no experience whatsoever...you want to be a head coach in the NHL? Go to the minors, become an assistant coach somewhere, ANYTHING...later

Messier's sense of entitlement towards this organization has been a real turn off for the last 15 or 16 years, since he left the first time (for Vancouver).

If he wants to be a coach, why not coach then? There's hundreds of junior teams that would probably take him in a heartbeat, and I'd imagine some AHL teams would even give him a shot (or in an assistant role).

He's basically leaving to become the figurehead for a youth hockey development program. How does this honestly help him get back to the NHL?

No it's philanthropy what he's doing. He wants to do that for a year or two? Cool.

Go coach in the hard winters of Moose Jaw or Regina where temperatures are -10 and there's a few 100 rowdy townies in the audience with marginal WHL or OHL talent. THAT's paying dues.

Maybe he'd rather be in mangement? If so, overseeing whatever project this is could be a good way to start showing his business acumen

Don't get this sentiment. Graves has put in a lot of time scouting juniors/other youth leagues, and fostered a lot of good relationships with talent evaluators/coaches at that level.

Give credit where credit is due - Graves puts his all into this organization, whether it's promo crap or real work.

What did Messier do besides be Sather's cigar and fishing buddy?
 
Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too? Didn't want him as head coach, also didn't want him groomed for GM told either.

Loved him as a player but if the ice he's totally different.

Seriously.

Plus, Gravy doesn't have the sense of entitlement that Mess always had. When Mess is around, it's always about him. When Gravy is around, it's always about "us" and "we" and everyone but himself.
 
We have a former soccer player in Austria who scored the game winning goal in a meaningless game vs Germany in 1978 and therefore still is a hero here. Everytime there's a change in the coaching staff of the National Team, he makes a case why he himself or one of his friends should get the job.
He would say (not an actual statement, but so you get the idea) "Yadayada ... 1978 ... I'm the greatest ... Cordoba [that's the place they won] ... you should kiss my feet".
I'm kinda glad Messier walked, because his behavior in the last couple of years indicated he's becoming that guy. The patterns certainly are there with all the 1994 stuff, only Mess didn't say it expressly. But from the stunts he pulled towards the end of his stint here, I kinda got the feeling he thinks the club owes him. All the best to him, but frankly, I don't really give a ****.

The project is already being developed, and bureaucrats have already decided how things will be run there. Messier has no equity in the project, and is certainly not going to be given some sort of management title, and it's not going to open until late 2018/early 2019 at the quickest (and we know how union construction projects go in NY).

He was already involved in this project prior, there's no reason why he had to leave to "show his business acumen" -- this is just the easiest place for him to fall (and to give it publicity).
