We played the minor midget team I help coach with my dad, who are coming off a league championship in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association and a provincial semifinalist. They were cocky little punks saying that we were old and they were going to run us out of the rink. We made them work!

Nice goal at the end

If you like goals, there was a lot. A football score. We only had 8 players

I have had a interesting observation tonight. I play way better in sub games then I do my teams games. It’s not just my imagination. It’s been confirmed by teammates.

At least now I’ve identified the problem.

Tonight I was 2 goals 1 assist. I had toe drags and stick handling. Hell I attempted the Michigan and got the puck half way up the back of the net before I lost it.

I've noticed similar things when I sub as well. Maybe subconsciously we don't feel as much pressure or as much obligation to be on top of our game since its not our main team? I play defense and find myself carrying the puck out of our zone a lot more when I sub compared to when playing on my regular team.

that is what me and my buddy came up with after talking about it. I definitely feel looser, more willing to try things

Normally I play forward, but last session started covering back on D. when i started out i was all loose like you mention carrying the puck and firing sauce up ice. the more games i played back there i swear i got worse as i started expecting more out of myself

hmmm.. good talk ill reflect on all this

Tonight I subbed for a game before mine. Felt really good. Played really well. Until I fell hard onto my left hip /butt area. Right on the bone area where the pants got no pad. It’s stoved up pretty good. Muscles instantly seized up

I played in my game stupidly, still scored a goal. I’m sure it will be fine by next week

I'm convinced that ice is the worst surface on Earth to fall on.

Fisticuffs at a beer league game today. Some 18-20 year old kiddo fell when we both went for the puck, I accidentally fell on top of him when I tried to reach for the puck and stepped on his stick.

The poor man’s Chris Simon took it personally, dropped his gloves, tried to rip my helmet off and started throwing uppercuts after I wrestled him down. None of the punches landed but it took 2 refs and a team mate to calm the lad down, he got thrown out of the game and hopefully faces a fine or suspension from the league.

It’s unfortunate people can be such assholes. I appreciate it’s totally up to interpretation when incidents happen as to the cause. You just hope everyone is operating with good faith…. But you just never know when someone is going to take something wrong and snap. Any throwing of punches in beer league is unacceptable. I hope the kids gets a suspension. Some times guys learn to chill out. Sometimes they don’t

I accidentally ran into a female skater in my league Monday. I thought the puck was going past her but she caught it after turning around ….her momentum stopped. I didn’t see she caught the puck…. I was taking big strides to get some speed and chase the puck, however I just ended up running into her back. I slowed myself “at the last second” when I realized she wasn’t moving. I grabbed her shoulders to keep her from hitting the ice. The worst part is just the last week she was complaining about some other guy running into her. It’s was a total accident and I didn’t even realize it was her until after I made contact and grabbed her shoulders. I don’t think she thinks that though. later in the game she grouched at me about where I set up to try to take a 1 timer down low. I feel like shit even though i know both were just hockey plays. Arguably bad hockey plays. But they were they play I made to try to get the puck and score

On a positive note my son brought this home today from the rink. Our rink has a small pro shop that is no longer selling sticks so he scooped this up and loaded our sticks into it in the garage. Now I have to move everything around to give this dude a a good spot.

Ugh. At men's league last night the opposition, out of 10 skaters, only had 2 players from their regular roster. The rest were subs, and don't even play in this league.

So I mean I'll give them credit for at least getting subs so we could play - just getting a forfeit would have been worse.

But still - it meant A: the game was delayed by 10-15 minutes as everyone needed to fill out waivers prior to playing. In the end they wound up getting a 2 minute "delay of game" penalty to start the game, but that mattered little because:

B: wherever they got these guys from they were too good for our division or tier. It was 10-2, could have been much worse but they were easing off pretty early on.

One of those "I'm getting off the ice at midnight and am going to be bagged tomorrow - for this?" kind of moments.

That sort of thing is just crazy to me. It's not that I can't imagine getting into a fight. I mean, shit happens when people are being competitive. Sometimes it just escalates and neither is willing to back down, it is what it is. But being out there in the fray of things, you get into a collision and your first thought is to drop your gloves and start swinging, that's a sign of someone whose basic understanding of the situation is just "off". Like they don't understand what a rec league is.

Exactly, these types are missing the whole point of why we all are at a rink at 10 pm on a Wednesday.

I have no problem with contact and physicality, on the contrary I like it. I have no problem with fighting in pro hockey provided both parties are willing. And I probably wouldn’t have any problem with fighting in a beer league if both parties agree to it, but outside that it’s a big no no.

You don’t expect shit like that to happen and hence you can hurt someone real bad. We all got families, jobs and whatnot, this is supposed to be fun.

ok... so tonight im the asshole with loaded subs apparently. lower level league in a small town in ohio. coaches, dads, sons, a few rando's, and some long time hockey friends kind of league.

over skilled guy 1......we had a guy subbing in at goalie out of columbus in the first game for our league. its a bit of a drive so a lot of times guys coming from columbus appreciate the extra game. Normally i "make" my son play goalie for our team (he doesnt love it). on occasion he skates out if we have a extra goalie. tonight was such a night after he asked the guest goalie if he wanted a second game

over skilled guy 2, he's only allowed 1 goal by league rules. he is our teams designated "mentor" and he is only on our team because i asked his girlfiriend to play for us, and to get her i had to take him... which was cool anyways because i like him

over skilled guy 3.... he's on our team... hes a ref, he's super skilled but very out of shape. he flys under the radar but really is a tremendous set up guy... But he is so under the radar the other team didnt even realize they should be objecting to his skill level.... instead they complained about a tall guy that has only ever played in our D league along with me and another guy since like 2012

over skilled guy 4.... the one to many.... but before i explain guy 4 let me explain who was out as to not come off like im a d league team stacker, as i was accused of being this evening. I go out of my way to find new players. On my team i have a guy from work who is a very low skilled player i set up with gear. there is another guy who just started playing like 2 years ago but we have him playing great. Out tonight is the 18 year old kid i picked up from the community college accross the road from the rink (not a good a story as it sounds) and i set up with gear to play on the team, he was sick today. Our solid but defintily D level winger and center no showed.... so we are sitting there going out onto the ice with 9 skaters, which is fine.... and sub 4 comes over. guy 4 is young man ive known for about 10 years. id just set him up as a mentor on a team that hadnt won a game all year. technically he is a JV coach. but he is standing there wanting to play another game. I should have said no. immediately the other team picks up on him and is all pissed off. we won 5-3 or something, the game was 2-3 for a good bit. I was getting whacked and bitched at the entire game. one of the refs literally came into the locker room to bitch us out after the game. the problem was that team has a hot temptererd guy who took a ill fated run. thankfully he was stopped from doing it, but it about broke into a issue. the other teams captain was texting me.

I blame the new jerseys. they are so sick and everybody is just jealous.. sure, i probably shouldnt have grabbed that sub to get us to 10 skaters. oh well. fun night of beer league hockey

Heard and saw a story from an acquaintance....

Trying to think how you would handle a really dirty scumbag player who subtely but "accidentally on purpose" and i mean 100% on purpose highsticks you in the face under the guise of trying to defend/stick lift. Could really injure someone.

If it happened to me, I'm pretty sure i'm tomahawking/baseball batting them in the face, i don't care if i take out all your teeth or blind you and leave you with a big scar and seriously injured.

imo it's open season on you and whatever happens to you is deserved. just gotta be careful with aftermath but if what i'm seeing and hearing is true, they'd be able to prove the Scumbag player was doing this with intent

Pretty much why I quit Beer League hockey. Too many fragile egos.

I haven't played in a while, but when I do- I just do pick-up hockey.

Your league should be on top that. I've played in a league or 2 where they don't check or do anything and just let whoever shows up, play.

But the the current league I play in, they verify each player. If you play on another team in the league and paid up, they usually let you play as long as you're not like a star player in the top division trying to play E division.

Issue would be is the criminal charges you'd definitely face for the Tomahawk swing. Proving an intentional highstick during a play would be difficult, but everyone seeing you baseball swing a guy in the face would easily be a criminal offence.

I've played hockey at many many levels and have NEVER seen someone intentionally highstick someone.....with the intent to hit them in the head. If it was to happen and you knew it to be true. It would be a challenge to some fistacuffs.

Worst I have seen in all my years reffing men's league was a guy probably in 2005 or so skate across the neutral zone and cross check a player in the face. It was at U of A arena and it was because they were losing. What an idiot.
