I concur with the general consensus… I didn’t love Mears. Errey should have stayed. I hope he ends up doing well wherever he goes…At least they aren’t bringing Steigy back as play by play.
Getzoff will be a good changeup.
Gosh I miss Lange….

He tries too hard. I was stuck in a hotel room with no access to any NHL draft stream but his on YouTube. He’s terrible.

Cool guy but he sucks at broadcasting. He’s part of the new boys crew that made Canadian hockey channels unwatchable.

If you want to talk about ex-NHL players that are good on TV, Bieksa rocks! Can we find someone like him instead of a clown?

I keep seeing people excited for Bourque, but I am saying the same thing. The difference between Errey and Bourque is Errey was actually a really good hockey player and he knows the nuance of the game backwards and forwards. Both Bourque and Caufield are two guys that Mario has taken great care of because they took care of him.

Armstrong is an interesting choice though - has pedigree much like Errey, is very entertaining (maybe tries a bit too hard), recognizable, and he and Getzoff are young guys that can be around a long time. I think NHL Network hires Errey and Mears. Both have worked for them in the past.

Steiggy got a cushy retirement gig from the Pens. He isn't going anywhere.

Silly sports personalities rule because then you get to see 45 year old fans (who are desperately clinging to their ideas of being "cool and xtr3m3" from when they were 14) lose their shit over the absolute dumbest things possible.

Errey was kind of goofy in an entertaining way. Mears I never understood the hate, he was just okay.

Although I think he was an upgrade over late Lange. I think people's nostalgia really clouded how awful and boring he was near the end of his TV run. I know the Pens weren't exactly exciting on the ice around that time but he could induce a coma.

Either way, I'm not too upset about this news.
 
Those are fair points. Steigy’s noticeable awfulness has been gone for years, but with Mearsy’s unremarkable professional bland fake enthusiasm its hard to believe he’s been on more than two or three years.
