yeah, it didn’t keep viewership for me, maybe for people new to the Pens…I found it disingenuous…it’s not the positivity about coming back from a deficit or anything….it’s the “they could have a done a better job” but then he won’t go on to discuss who was out of position and why (“Dumo went to chase a guy behind the net, he shouldnt have done that”)…he was a f**king coward in his critique of play like he felt his job was not to be accurate but to never say a negative word about a player…you can’t analyze the game and not say anything negative…if a bad goal happens, I want to hear who was responsible and why
I think I personally agree with you, but trying to look at it from a base level fair-weather fan... I do not.

Indeed, it was. I'm somewhat surprised, at least about Errey. I could see FSG wanting a little different style from Mears, but Errey has had some national opportunities here and there.
I think it might have to do with Getzoff and Bourque's existing chemistry, and just wanting to keep that.

I should mention that the Tweet also said those two would take over. Pretty sure that hasn't been confirmed yet though, today?

With all the goofy stuff going on in todays world, I do not trust who they will hire for TV broadcasting next.

Who is this Mears everyone is talking about? I know a Mearsy...

Would like to have kept Errey. Not a fan of Armstrong. We got a lot of him on Canadian TV the last few years and meh.

If a bad goal happens shouldn't you as a viewer be able to discern as to which player or players are responsible? Don't mean to sound arrogant but there's never been a game that I've watched where by I needed any so called ''expert'' to explain what happened. Well, maybe when I was 10 or 12, but that was long ago.

Some times you miss stuff and even if I know, I want an honest critique of the team, not some lame bs designed to make everyone feel good

Once Lange left the booth I paid much less attention to the announcers. Everyone since has paled in comparison, heck even Langes last couple of years it was hard to listen. I get your point but if you want an honest or somewhat objective critique you probably won't get it from ''in house'' announcers and commentators.

It hasn't been confirmed. Yohe's report suggests Getzoff is likely moving to TV but that it's less clear about Bourque.

I don't mind the ole 2 niner, he does get pissed sometimes which I don't mind but I think it's the excessive of it that turns people off. He does make valid points though and calls it like he sees it which is respectable

To be fair, the 2022-2023 Pittsburgh Penguins were infuriating to watch at times (Source: Every GDT around the 3rd period).

Colby is younger and likely resonates better with the Crosby era fanbase of viewers, as well as being less removed from his playing days. He's done national broadcasts on TNT, spent some time at Sportsnet, and does podcasts for Barstool. I can see why FSG wants him for a larger role, which I hope is as the color guy for TV broadcasts.

Bourque has a voice for radio.

Sad to see Bibs go. He was the enthusiastic voice of this great era.

Sure, he was a homer and a goof. But he was OUR homer and goof, dammit!!!

“Mearsy” however can f*** off somewhere. He had all the charisma and personality of a soggy piece of toast.
Mears while likable as a person was boring as hell, I concur.

I'll miss Errey. If Lange is a generational PBP guy then Errey was like a franchise Color guy. Legit big shoes to fill for whoever comes next.

Tbh all of this is deck chair shuffling. The big news will be if the new RSN will have direct streaming of all the games.

That's why I actually like Errey. He had a good balance of upbeat but didn't shy away from saying when the Pens needed to pick it up.

Here's the thing though, it baffles me to an extent when people get so down on "homerism". I'm always like - who in the good god damn f*** do you think signing their paychecks? Probably not a great short, mid, or long-term strategy for employment to be known as the guy who will trash the team you are representing. Critical analysis is always welcomed but self-preservation tells you that there is a limit.

I like Caufield. If he's the new color guy and they let Army take his spot in the intermission, that would be fine.
Yea, that's why I like Jack Edwards now. I realized I want an unadulterated homer calling the games.

Agreed, I'm not happy about this.

Copied from my post on the main boards:

Errey usually gets it right the first time and is quick on obscure rulings and reviews.

There was a shootout some years back between the Rangers and the Pens. Interesting moment because they called the game and the players went into the locker-room, but the refs reviewed the non-goal and ended calling the teams back out on the ice. Watch how Errey immediately knew it was a non-goal on the instant replay:

I remember that, it was cool that Errey immediately called it.

Errey knew hockey and was a class act. He was great for the fan who was just trying to learn the game as well as he explained a lot of it.

Still mis Lange a lot as he is a HOFer.
Dude played for 8 NHL squads and even captained the Sharks post Pens days if my beleaguered memory serves. He was solid as hell at what he did. Some folks are never happy.

Glad to see Mears go; he was a boring, endless fountain of meaningless stats. I liked Errey for the most part. All in all, when you can usually pick between the radio feed, the TV feed, or the other team's feed (unless it's the Bruins or the Caps), it doesn't really matter much anymore.
