He's the epitome of the bitter old meathead that has had the game pass him by 15+ years ago.
I wouldn’t mind that nearly as much if he was better at his job, but there’s no flow to his game calling, he just sorta blurts something out and drones on about how much we suck while we score a beautiful goal.

People just like him because they can act like they’re better fans for liking an inferior product that isn’t like all those other homer broadcasts.

I, on the other hand, would rather just embrace my own hypocrisy and dumbassery and prefer a broadcaster who also likes the team, just like myself. I don’t need validation of being a cynical moron, I can do that on my own thank you very much.

True. But homerism has it's limits, too. See: Stiegerwald grousing for like an hour about a perfectly valid penalty called against the Penguins while there is a game going on.

But yes. I would prefer to have some level of enthusiasm and flair.

EDIT: I'll give 29er this... he's better than Caufield!

I like Errey better than Borque. Army has been coming along so if he's the color guy, maybe that works.

Seems like an odd move though. I didn't hate either of them so...not quite sure why decided to get the boot.

Jay Caufield wasn't even very good at getting hit in the head.

I guess I agree that you don't want a broadcaster loving Rust's 340th terrible shift in a row, but I guess I just come down on the side that I don't want my color guy analyzing the game. That's what I'm doing postgame. I want my color guy adding interesting anecdotes to the broadcast. Bourque isn't adding anything interesting. He's basically this site, distilled into an audio form, and one relentlessly negative (even if deservedly so) firehose of hockey is enough.

Probably going to just simulcast the radio and TV side, tbh, and management likes Bourque and Getzoff better for whatever (*cough* Boston *cough*) reason.

That's why I actually like Errey. He had a good balance of upbeat but didn't shy away from saying when the Pens needed to pick it up.

Here's the thing though, it baffles me to an extent when people get so down on "homerism". I'm always like - who in the good god damn f*** do you think signing their paychecks? Probably not a great short, mid, or long-term strategy for employment to be known as the guy who will trash the team you are representing. Critical analysis is always welcomed but self-preservation tells you that there is a limit.

I like Caufield. If he's the new color guy and they let Army take his spot in the intermission, that would be fine.

People hate on Potash, but his goofy schtick and his camaraderie with the Pens players is pretty refreshing after 60 minutes of Bourque cosplaying as me, HandshakeLine, with a hangover and a concussion.

But yeah, I thought Errey was a pretty good blend of qualities you want in a color guy. He's memorable, he's upbeat and quick, he's insightful, and he's got an identity. I think people on this board just didn't want a guy actually having fun behind the mic.

I guess that's fine. The only thing I don't like is when I have to listen to the radio...I'm always VERY much aware that I'm listening to the radio. The audio quality is always dogshit and Bourque comes through like he's on a WWII handheld radio in the middle of the pacific.

Bummed. I liked Errey.

Anyone else remember that brief time the Pens had Ponikarovsky and he boarded someone? Errey said the player who got hit, "was going down and felt this huge man just plow into him."

I was fine with Errey. Kind of a goof who's knowledgeable of the game. Mears was someone you'd thought would grow into something but never did. Nice enough guy, just too boring.

He'll get another gig quick enough I'm sure. Maybe back to NHL network.

I think Colby could handle color duties. Errey was not exactly measured in his words lol.

He'd probably be perfect for that third man between the benches role, sort of like what he was doing on some broadcasts last year?

Played with our big 3, knows their personalities and what would get a good soundbite out of them.
I like him just fine. His comic relief is welcome.
I just don't think he's anywhere close to Errey's level and isn't ready to do it.

Mears being gone warms my heart! Great guy, but very unremarkable as an announcer. He's AHL caliber, hey, it's honest work...

Most people on this board seem to be upset Errey is gone :dunno:

And a good number of them like Colby who really turns the fun to an 11.

Probably something to do with balancing out the negativity on here

They did a good job of selling the product, though I wish they were a bit more honest sometimes, instead of selling everything with rose colored glasses.

However, as I said, ultimately their job was to sell the team, which they did well IMO.

@Andy99 and others - i get that Errey didn't critique players. I understand that. His job it to keep viewership. We would be down 5 goals and Errey would be saying "Oh if they just get 1!!! WHO KNOWS!"

If you think about it.. that keeps viewership and intrigue. That was his job.

I don't mind the ole 2 niner, he does get pissed sometimes which I don't mind but I think it's the excessive of it that turns people off. He does make valid points though and calls it like he sees it which is respectable

I'm surprised people don't like Telestrator Jay, I think he runs that segment rather well.

My dream would be Kasper on TV. Dude is funny

yeah, it didn’t keep viewership for me, maybe for people new to the Pens…I found it disingenuous…it’s not the positivity about coming back from a deficit or anything….it’s the “they could have a done a better job” but then he won’t go on to discuss who was out of position and why (“Dumo went to chase a guy behind the net, he shouldnt have done that”)…he was a f**king coward in his critique of play like he felt his job was not to be accurate but to never say a negative word about a player…you can’t analyze the game and not say anything negative…if a bad goal happens, I want to hear who was responsible and why
