I'm not versed enough to grade these prospects, but I still feel like we need to take in all inputs right now with a grain of salt. Let's see how these kids not only adapt to the major league but also to the organization, the environment, etc. I really want to see them play in Rangers and/or Pack uniforms before judgment. How many of these kids we've picked could jump right into the club and how many will need to grow with the Pack? We all thought Chytil was going to make the direct leap. I need to keep occupied as much as the next guy, but grading these trades now seem premature. They really should come with an asterisk.

will someone just please agree or disagree that McDo is not the captain-type. i can't help but feel alone in this regard

He is clearly not the Captain type. Making him the Captain immediately detracted from his game.

I think it's extremely premature to talk about contending. Not only are we missing the 2 legit superstars you need to win the Cup (Leetch and Messier, Crosby and Malkin, Kopital and Doughty, Kane and Toews, Chara and Thomas, Brodeur and Stevens), and we don't even have that top-shelf second tier (Zubov, Graves, Kovalev, Larmer). Maybe Kreider-Zib-Butcher fit that second tier, but we don't have that on defense, we are merely hoping Skjei and others get there. We have a bunch of guys who will turn into Nemchinov, Matteau, Tikkanen, Karpovtsev. We are hoping Lias turns into Larmer and Chytil into Kovalev (at least how he was in the Spring of 1994, not when he was enigmatic).

Who is our Messier? Who is our Leetch? Zubov? Graves? To discuss Cup contention right now is like saying, "well, I already have sperm in my balls, so pretty much the same as having a child, time to go picking college for him."

Right now our development is in the sperm stage. Congratulations, we are fertile. Now let's see if it actually goes anywhere.

contend doesn't mean win. contend just means get into the playoffs and be an inspiring team. and also draw talent to the team as a result of the team's success and future outlook. contend for the cup and win the cup are two different concepts. the superstars can come after the building blocks are in place. can also always overpay for a superstar once you are satisfied by your core.

And as much as I loved Leetch, he wasn't the Captain type either. These "lead by example" guys typically don't work out so well as captain. You need a guy who is going to get in your face and tell you that you have to work harder. Then that same guy goes out on the ice and bashes someone's head in for hitting you.

Namestnikov is way more reliabe in the d zone and in getting pucks out of the zone.Ill gladly give up the few extra points Miller outscores him for the smarter 3 zone player.

Look, I honestly hope for all of our sakes that this trade will work out but I think that you guys are overrating Namestnikov. All of the positive attributes to his game could very well be a product of playing with Kuch and Stammer.

I've felt that from the beginning. Hank is also an on ice leader but not captain type. The closest to a captain has been Zuccs as a heart and soul guy but the locker room is full of beta type personalities. I'd say the best suited personality wise for the C would be Shatty

Let's face it, the Rangers are soft, they need more alpha type players on this team that will fight back when kicked and light a fire under the team when they need it

Reminds me of Leetch as captain. You can clearly see his production drop off once that piano was on the back. No one can question him as a hockey player, but the 'A' would have been a better letter for McD.

Yeah, as much as we scream and yell at each other, like 99% of us want AV gone. It's pretty telling.

You think a good coach would come here at the start to a rebuild? Do you remember one disaster after another we had coaching the Rangers during the Dark Ages?

i do agree shattenkirk could be a good candidate. he has a true passion about this team (and hopefully about playing at an elite level once his injury is behind him).

You should be natural born leader and more important, charismatic, to get the "C." McD and Leetch... who knows how they conducted themselves behind closed locker room doors, but publicly you need a fiery, visible type of guy.

I don't think we are really in a position to say as we aren't in the locker room. Everyone considers Messier to have been a great captain, but without the guarantee and the cup win in 94, would we be saying that? If we had won the cup in 2014, would McD be viewed in a similar way?

Maybe McD was a great captain and maybe it wasn't, but it isn't all on his shoulders. All of the vets have to carry the load there and if there is a failing of leadership, it's on all of them.

I dont think expecting a 40+ points reliable 3 zone player is overrating him.

exactly, publicly mcdonagh behaves like a second rate defenseman who isn't even aware of his own talent (that was once there and has since faded).

Leetch wasn't captain material. Drury wasn't good enough. Neither was McDonagh. Clearly the Rangers need to invent a time machine and bring back Mark Messier who everyone gets compared with to determine whether they're good enough captains or not.

Well, Babcock went to Toronto.

While that is a great example, having Lamoriello, Shanahan, and top draft picks at the ready had to have helped sell Babcock on that one quite a bit. Not to mention one hell of a payday.

I just vehemently disagree with all of this... Honestly I frequently feel like he's been carryi g his Parker...does he make mistakes? Of course...name a defenseman who doesn't...but he's almost always free for an outlet almost always right where he should be within the confines of the system and always tries to take the body rather than stick or pokecheck. He joins the offensive attacks at the right time and almost never seems to pinch at the wrong time...ask yourself...how many times have you see Ada defending 2 or 3 on 1s....I feel like it's once or twice a game if not more...that the opposition scores isn't in Ada...it's on his partner for constantly pinching at the wrong time....

I've been focusingin on Ada a lot since his callup...and believe me..I really hated the fact that we traded for him and his history...but to my observation..he's playing this system very very well and is gettingcrushed in plus minus almost exclusively because his partners have been aaawwwfffuullll
4 assists in his last 9 games...lots of shots on goal..

I've been really impressed.

I think just looking at him getting roasted on a 2 on 1 isn't really fair...he's the guy back....thats on the guy who hung him out to dry.
He's a minus 18 in 25 games. That's his partner dragging him down? C'mon man. This guy isn't a good guy and he isn't a good hockey player.

I thought Drury was a good captain. He scored some clutch goals and had a big impact on Dubinsky and Callahan.

Those two were very lucky they got to play with some great players in their formative years. Jagr, Straka, Gomez, Drury and Shanahan.

Avery, lol.

That Avery-Dubinsky-Jagr line was fire.

I think this guy will be our future C

Toews is captain material. so is stamkos. these are guys who are aware of their talent, know how to represent their team and reflect a air of confidence. i can't say ovechkin is that, but he's just so elite they can't not make him captain. scott stevens was. sakic was. i think drury was.

I will bet $100 that Miller easily outperforms Namestnikov on their next contracts. People lump Miller in with Callahan/Dubinsky because they are all American and occasionally hit things. Miller is one of the most skilled players on the team, way more than those two, if anything his problem is trying to rely on skill too much.

While I tend to agree, and this is full of speculation but, if the trade was meant also to have a Russian added to Buch, Georgiev in order to get the two KHL prospects over, that sort of value versus them not coming over makes a difference.

I think the Rangers are worried about the two KHL kids signing another deal over there. Now that they have the rights to both, getting them over here when the Rangers already have some players with similar roots may sway their choices.

I think we discount the difficulty a young kid may have saying no to a larger contract to stay where they are versus them picking up, leaving their country to go somewhere completely foreign where if they end up in the AHL the pay may be less than what they were being offered to stay.

Not sure I'm aware of off ice stuff, but he certainly never displayed a great attitude. I think they felt that this is a guy who will fester during a rebuild.

When Miller was trying to break into the NHL for good there were definitely a few times he was scratched because of what appeared to be attitude issues (coaches saying stuff like "he has to decide if he wants to be a professional in this league or not" etc). What that really means, I do not know.

I agree about his apparent attitude when things weren't going the Rangers way this season and after the rebuild was announced. Just seemed to give up.

Perhaps I'm prone to conspiracy theories, but something to chew on for fun... With Dolan coming out in support of this today, it would not shock me in the least if there is an under the table agreement somewhere that the Rangers are winning the lottery this year.

The decision to move on from McDonagh and the assets returned for him looks a lot different with a player like Dahlin in the wings. Fun to speculate about for sure, and honestly not something I'd be surprised to see happen in this league.

If we are getting Dahlin and Gorts knows it, it wouldn't make any sense to disassemble the team. It would make a lot more sense to keep McDonagh, Stepan, etc and go for it. Adding Dahlen changes a lot immediately.
