I would still pay to watch a team of Mcdavid and 19 AHL tweeners every night. They won't win anything but Mcdavid alone is worth the cost of admission. I highly doubt that he asks for 20% of the cap, he wants to win and he knows you can't win paying 1 player that much.

Again, he has had one great season and this contract would eat only 4 UFA years at best. Look at all the other 2nd contracts, none were close to max money. He hasn't really earned it yet.

McDavid is going to make a **** load in endorsements (hell, he's already on the cover of NHL '18) so he can still get paid a ton and also help build a better team around him and build a legacy as a Cup winner, not a money chaser. I don't see the need for him to chase max money right now.

Sign a 5 year contract like a lot of previous great players have and cash in on the mega deal on the 3rd contract when it was really earned. He's within his right to demand as much as he wants but I never thought of him as the "give me everything right now" type.

You can't compare him to any others. There's no others like him.

Add to all this, he comes across as a very low quality guy. He was openly talking about how one of his big motivations last year was to get himself and Draisaitl their bonus money.

Dude's a great player, but not the brightest of lights. Probably has more talent than Sid, but not a fraction of his intelligence.

McDavid will hit the max. Orr's agency and the NHLPA will push for the max. This will be a firewall contract for both. Every other team in the league would be submitting a max offersheet come July 1st, 2018. His agency knows it, and the NHLPA is counting on it.
Do you realize that when Crosby took his original $8.7 million deal that it was over 18% of the cap, meaning he left just over 1% of the cap hit available to him on the table? Why would McDavid take anything less? Do you honestly think the NHLPA and Orr's agency is going to let their most important player/client take any sort of discount? Use your head. This is a business and players are commodities. Both sides know it and approach it that way.
You're going to be wrong again. Remember last year when you swore up and down on here that McDavid wasn't going to sign his extension until 2018 because he was going to field offer sheets?

I mean honestly its all just gpride at that point... if someone signs an 8 year 10m per deal and they and their families arent set for life they are idiots ( and yes i know the majority of pro sports players go bankrupt)

I mean if thats what he wants great but cups will be much harder... thats almost crosby plus Kessel money...

And that dude is making megabank from endorsements too

That's not yet been proven wrong. A lot of whispers our there that his ultimate aim is to become a Maple Leaf.

Not very realistic, we will not have McDavid money available if he broke free. Sadly if he leaves the Oilers I predict he would become a Ranger. That would be the NHL's best case scenario.

Very low quality guy? Damn, that's harsh to say about a guy who's extremely humble for how good he is. He openly talked about the scoring race being tight and getting bonus money for his friend/teammate Draisaitl. Not money for himself. So he's not the brightest of lights because he's a competitive guy and wants his teammates to succeed? This is why most hockey players have no personality. Because fans like you bash them when they don't give the generic hockey culture answers.

It doesn't make sense for him to get 14 million. The highest is 10.5 right now and he still has 5 more RFA years. If I were Edmonton I wouldn't do more than 11.5/year. He is still under team control for years.

Crosby signed for 5 years and 8.7/year and so did Malkin for their 2nd contracts. Ovechkin got a 13 year deal for 9.5 under the old rules. I suppose that these are the closest comparables to McDavid. I do not know what the cap was at back then though.

Uh, what?

And Crosby had two 100+ point seasons when he signed his 2nd contract. He certainly didn't make $3.5M/yr higher than the highest paid player in the league.

Might wanna go and learn what a salary cap is. Doesn't matter what the NHLPA and Orr push for, at the end of the day, Mcdavid's salary isn't going to magically push the cap up higher. Players will still only get 50% share of the pie. The higher McDavid's number is, the less it is for someone else.

I'd say 12 is where he'll end up at. More than anybody else but allows a team to be built around him.

The .Cap isn't really growing quickly enough to justify that kind of dollar. He's definitely fun to watch, and deserving of top dollar, but that cap hit could kill the Oilers making a top team.

There's a good chance that will be in McDavid's control. If the Oilers only offer 11.5M and he refuses to sign for that, there's a good chance a team or two would offer more and then Edmonton would have to match it (or not). If McDavid put out rumors that he'd only take, e.g., 14M, and would accept offer sheets, you know that there'd be teams offering that and happy to pay the 4 1sts.

I'm not saying that he'll do that but he has all the cards here even though he's an RFA.

He'll be worth every penny. If you want to keep the best player in the world you have to payoff it.

Absurd to ask him to take a pay cut, especially with guys like Lucic were willing given bloated contracts.

If Mcdavid and Edmonton let it get to that point, something is wrong anyways. Edmonton obviously matches in that scenario but that would be bad for all parties involved.
