I could see it happening.

I have a feeling Doughty is going to ask for more than Kopitar/Toews got. Someone will give Doughty that money too.

I could see McDavid asking for 12+ million.

He's the worlds best player, entering his prime years. Why shouldn't he be paid as such?

Good chance he'll have his most offensively prolific season by just 22. Might as well cash in

btw, Dreger isn't presenting this as insider info. He's just speculating, so this is exactly zero relevance unless Dreger is your oracle

If Mcdavid and Edmonton let it get to that point, something is wrong anyways. Edmonton obviously matches in that scenario but that would be bad for all parties involved.

I agree. You wouldn't want it to get to that point but I don't think it's as simple as "Edmonton shouldn't pay him more than 11.5 bc he's an RFA". That's fine if it's acceptable to McDavid but if it's not, he can easily get more.

Do you realize that when Crosby took his original $8.7 million deal that it was over 18% of the cap, meaning he left just over 1% of the cap hit available to him on the table? Why would McDavid take anything less? Do you honestly think the NHLPA and Orr's agency is going to let their most important player/client take any sort of discount? Use your head. This is a business and players are commodities. Both sides know it and approach it that way.

The NHL salary cap was 56.7M back in 2008-2009. How much did Crosby get? My math could be wrong but 18% of 56.7 is 10.2M.

Lol on one side you have many saying he's worth every penny, then the other side saying he will give a hometown discount.

I love this forum.

Connor is stupid if he doesn't test offer sheets or doesn't demand a huge contract.

Big market teams will have no problem giving him that 14 million a year contract while giving up four first round draft picks for the Oilers to putz around with.

Big market clubs still operate under a cap system fella. 14 mil is too much for one player.

You're going to be wrong again. Remember last year when you swore up and down on here that McDavid wasn't going to sign his extension until 2018 because he was going to field offer sheets?

And he still hasn't signed an extension, so I'm not wrong. I wouldn't count your chickens on a contract until it is signed. It is doubtful Orr lets his client sign a contract that does not maximize his earning potential. Maybe try and show an Orr client who has done so.

Crosby signed his extension in 2007, when the cap was $50.3 million.

It really depends on the team. I agree with you that it's not necessarily a large market vs small market, though, since cap space will be important in figuring out who would bid for McDavid. But a team who can make a fair amount of cap space might bid for him. I think that many teams in struggling markets might be interested bc it would help them either sell out season tickets or increase their prices for (already sold out) season tickets.

Looks like the Oil will have to either waive or deal Nugent Hopkins now.

not really.. They will have to walk away from a couple of Nurse, Benning, Maroon, Strome and Caggiula next year if McDavid gets 12+ and Drai 8+.

Ok my bad but that's still not over 18% of the cap hit.

Though factor in, teams in less Han desirable locations often have to overpay to get star players.

If McDavid was playing anywhere Else in the league I'd expect him to ask for 12-14 million per, so in a way he's already giving the Oilers a break

Are you aware he's not allowed to sign an extension until July 1st?

Signing one of the best players could be any other number nearing the max. But the only worthy knowledge out of Dreger is when it comes from a cousin, a GM needing to drop-a-rumour or answering Bob's call forward.

Guess it's not going to take long for Edmonton to regret that horrendous Lucic contract. Draisaitl should get more than $7M as well. Regardless of their bind, they will find a way to lock up McDavid for eternity. Or just repeat what they did with Gretzky and send him to LA ;)

He's absolutely worth every dollar that he can ask for. The issue is going to be when his team has no cap space to sign or trade for complimentary players to help them win.

The pressure is going to be all on him. Learn from Chicago and the fans/media that are turning on Toews.
