Maybe yourself, but others are claiming he’s a lock for 150, and some are saying they think he’s going to hit 160+.
This forum has a problem with taking what is essentially a handful or less of people’s opinions and turning it into “others are claiming” as if it is a widespread phenomenon.
The vocal few calling for 160+, who I honestly can’t even recall, are not enough. As for 150, I’d say it’s somewhere around 50/50 at this point. For as many people saying he can possibly do it like me and even believing it will happen, there are just as many saying slow down, MAYBE 140 but 150 is nuts.
I think some of us would just like you to acknowledge that McDavid is on a 5 year heater and is in the process of conducting his masterpiece signature career season and proving that 2020-2021 was no fluke.
This is an underrated acconplishment. Crosby scored in 28 out of 29 games in his best run back in 2010-11. It might be that we have to go all the way back to 1995-96 when the late great Teemu Selanne had a point in 35 games out of 36 games. The only game he went pointless was when Winnipeg surprised him with the news that he's getting traded and it threw him off his game that night. I defense of McDavid his only pointless game in the last 30 games was on new years eve so he was most likely playing totally wasted that night.
If McDavid continues this trend of putting up points, he has to have one of the fewest pointless games in a season, outside Gretzky and Lemieux of course.
I looked through Yzerman, Esposito, and Nicholls’ 150+ point campaign game logs to see how many pointless games they had and where they stood 50 games into the season.
Yzerman had only 10 in 80 games. He had just 6 through 50 games played and all the way up through 58 games.
Esposito had 10 in 78 games. He had 7 through 50 games played.
Nicholls had 12 in 79 games. He had 6 through 50 games and up through game 54.
For fun, Lemieux’s 199 point season saw him go scoreless just 8 times in 76 games. He had just 5 through 50 games and all the way through game 56.
Of course, Gretzky is out of control. In 1985-1986 when he set the points record yet again with 215, he had at least a point in 48 out of his first 49 games, just 2 through 50, and only 3 out of 80 games played.
During 1983-1984, when he registered at least a point in his first 51 games, he also went pointless only 3 times out of 74 games.
Without going through the rest, I imagine those 5 seasons in a row where he averaged over 200 points, he probably only went pointless like 15 times out of 394 games. Absolute lunacy.
Perhaps McDavid can wedge himself in between Lemieux and the 3 other 150+ scorers not named Gretzky.
