McDavid heating up, what are odds on 150 points this season?

It depends, how many more dives will he make tonight, my god he should apply to the national swim team.
You know, I despise the Oilers, so take this for what it’s worth. When we (Ducks) actually had a decent team and our rivalry was pretty heated, watching. McDavid was a treat. Not just how good he was, but how he battled through the hooks and BS without embellishment.

I haven’t seen him as much the last couple years, but IF he is embellishing I’d blame it partly on the league and the piss poor officiating that often rewards it while turning a blind eye towards a player that does fight through the grabbing and interference.

I hate diving, but the jokes we call officials need to punish it, not react to and reward it

The man does not “dive”. He still battles through those holds and hooks. He’s quite the specimen.

I never see him “go down easy”. There is obviously some bias… but when you’re flying, trips are certainly more dramatic lol

I wonder what the record is for the highest point total for a player whose team missed the playoffs.
Could a record be broken this year?

Mario Lemieux, 1987-88 Season: 70G, 98A, 168 points.

second highest total is also Lemieux, as it happens... 1985-86 Season: 48G, 93A, 141 points.

What is better?

What powerplay is better? I'd probably start with the 1996 Pens. Lemieux, Francis, Jagr, Zubov, Nedved. 3 first ballot HOF'ers, another HOF'er, and an all-star.

There are quite a few more in the history of the NHL that have way better 5 man units than the modern Edmonton Oilers unit. The Oilers are good but you can't be serious that you think their current power play is the best of all time?

Show the powerplay efficiency stats and let's compare. The list of names is completely irrelevant.

The 96 Penguins were dominant but the raw stats will look worse.

The had a PP conversion rate of 26%. 10th place that year had an 18.8%. Penguins were 138% of 10th place

The Oilers have a PP conversion rate of 31.5%. 7 teams have a conversion rate over 26% this year.

10th place has a conversion rate of 24.4%. The Oilers are 129% of 10th place.

So the raw numbers indicate Oilers, but it would be fair to say the Penguins were further separated from peer teams.

Well I mean for example last year they didn't even lead the league in PP %. They were 3rd. To be the greatest of all time, shouldn't they at least lead their own most recent full season?

I really really hope he does it. It'll be the most legendary season I've witnessed in my lifetime.

And we're really talking about 1/3rds of seasons to declare "best of all time?"

Let's see what the numbers look like after 82 games?

Last year over 82 games Edm finished 3rd overal, at 26%. Not too shabby at all, but teams like the 2017/18 pens led the league at 26.2%.

No team has finished over 30% since 2000. I don't have stats before that but it sounds like the late 70s Canadiens did it.

Oilers PP has finished 1st, 1st, 3rd and is currently 1st. Their stretch from 2019-22 Rivals The domination of any powerplay over a sustained period of time since pp% has been recorded.

Well, that's fair. Names-wise they are not close to the best but if you want sustained performance, there's no doubt they are on a good 4-5 year run.

I do wonder what would happen if all scoring paces stayed the same (they won’t) and McDavid ended with 70+G/160+pts BUT Edmonton missed the playoffs.

Typically voters won’t give it to a guy who didn’t make the playoffs but at the same time how do you not vote for that kind of individual performance?

I didn't think 150 was possible in the new NHL. What McDavid is doing this season is absolutely bonkers. Hitting 150 would put him in all timer category for best regular seasons.

This is the new new NHL. Scoring is a fair bit higher now than it was 5-10 years ago.

Let's see if he can keep the pace going tonight. St. Louis is the only team in the NHL is less than 1ppg against.

It doesn't really make sense to use 10th place because that makes comparisons with the teams like the 1965-66 Blackhawks impossible or the 1969-70 Bruins pointless. I think league median would be more useful

Crazy how Draisaitl has the most primary points in the league and more primary points than anyone but McDavid has total points. Only 4 secondary assists all season?

That happened to McDavid in 2018-19. Kucherov had 12 more points than McDavid but McDavid had 98 primary points to Kucherov's 94.

1 point (goal) so far tonight.

that's some cope right there lol

and still not the same level as the 80s and early 90s, dominated by Lemieux and Gretzky.

Again, that's some cope.

150 points wasn’t possible until these last few seasons, yes because McDavid but also because scoring becoming easier for everyone.
