Watch it in real time. Literally no one on ice knew what the f*** happened. Not the Wild. Not the announcers. Not the Refs. Not even McDavid. He was literally gliding through after making a pass. Johanssan all antsy and unsure what McDavid was going to do with the puck, starts spazzing out and ends up ramming his face into McDavid's elbow as McDavid continued his glide. McDavid flinched and braced the contact which explains the 4cm movement in his elbow in super slow mo.

Look at Johanssen's head right before contact. It's moving backwards INTO the path of McDavid's elbow. Look at McDavid's eyes just fully focused ahead and not even looking at Johanssen spazzing out and making random movements.

Parody right? You can't be serious

I’ve seen bigger elbows thrown at Krazy Bins on 30% off day.
Not suspension worthy
Ya... I don't see it.
Far from a Mark Messier type of elbow where a guy like Modano's head spun around twice in the air before landing back on his body.
Contact, yes.
Intent to injure, um no.

The slewfoot by Hartman on Draisaitl...far more intent.

Hartman had an absolutely garbage hit against Bouchard last time these two teams played when it was a 7-1 game

Employ dirty plugs like Hartman and then cry when teams return the favor

In what world is that a slewfoot?

if that wasn't a penalty, or the Hartman hit on Bouchard hit wasn't a penalty....then McDavid's "elbow" shouldn't be a penalty

Meh. At worst a fine, could’ve been a minor. Also very easy to miss as a ref as the motion wasn’t big and obvious. If you need high def super slo mo to see it of course it gets missed. I think he just stick his arm out to make contact in general, no intent to catch the guys face but intent to make some contact.

He tried to protect himself from a hit, his elbow was stomach height. I think everyone would have had the same reaction.

That's why Crosby has 3 cups and McDavid 0.

High class winner vs this.
Isn't this Crosbys art?

That elbow must've hurt but like.. is that flop necessary? You didn't just get viscerally slapped across the face by Ronnie Coleman. Also, I just watched the clip again and realized Johansson just stops and and starts skating backwards right into McDavid's elbow.

Minor and potential fine at best. Personally I'd just go with a minor.

Huh? If refs miss a penalty call then any other infraction in the game should also not be a penalty?

1 - Hartman on Draisaitl should have been called a tripping penalty, ref let it go, figured he was kicking at the puck....that said, I thought they changed the rules years ago where even you attempt to get the puck (with your stick for example) and you get the puck first and still trip a guy...still a penalty. So yes, should have been a penalty......slewfoot? Not a chance. There is almost no similarity between this an a slewfoot other than the foot being involved. Slewfoots are taken seriously for a reason....much more dangerous than this play.

2 - Yes, McDavid should have been penalized for that. The comments that it couldn't have been intentional because he was looking the other way are simply willful ignorance. He could have some of the worse peripheral vision in the world and still be able to see him. That said, I don't know if it was intentional or not, but looked like it to me if I had to choose. He saw the guy coming, he initially tucked his arm a bit as if to squeeze by and then popped his elbow up a bit to get a shot in. Nothing really major there, but sneaking/dirty play. I wouldn't suggest it's anything more than a 2 min penalty though. Unfortunate the player left the game over it.

3 - The comments about McDavid taking more punishment than any other player in the history of the game are also dumb. Firstly dumb because it seems to be an excuse to allow the sneaky little shots. Look, I don't knock McDavid for doing it, players do little stuff like this, don't kill him for it, but call it for what it is. I don't doubt that McDavid takes a ton of punishment, but that's because he's a great player, they all take a ton. The more it seems to impact your game, the more you'll get as well.
