Of course it's going to be relatively minor if the tourney coincides with a time period where the best players...most or some....cant play in it.

It wouldn't be if the NHL decided that it is the centre of the hockey universe. I don't think there is any other sport in the world where a professional league think's it is bigger than the sport itself and the governing body.

Yeah Crosby was a beast at 18. It's too bad we didn't get to see McDavid in this tournament.

next year. unlikely Edmonton makes the playoffs next year and if they do, there's a later start date to the tournament next year.... more players should be freed up to accept invites.

Hall McDavid Eberle next year.

The Russian team didn't perform too well today. Respect to the American team - you guys were more organized. Bobrovsky was also huge in this game. Mozyakin's goal 'turned the tide' in a way - the US started playing primarily in terms of offence and the Russians capitalized on counter-attacks.

All in all, the US played very well - the score should've been something like 4-3, not 4-0.

Classic final tomrrow - Russia vs. Canada, excellent. The US vs. the Czech Republic should be an excellent game as well.

Geno has been improving with every match in the tournament, imo - he has made some very good defensive maneuvers and caused turnovers. His puck control and confidence with the puck have increased as well - if he's at 100%, everyone knows the guy is extremely hard to stop. Let's hope he comes out on top of his game tomorrow.

Ovechkin wasn't too visible in this game, until he scored. I hope he hits his stride as well in tomorrow's final.

Great game by Team USA. Obviously, Russia was very fortunate to still be in a position to win with 12 minutes left. Russia deserves some kudos for burying a few and keeping the pressure on. I still want to know how an organized system like the one the US employed could be thrown together in such a short time? The only clue I have is that many of them had been through the NTDP system. The US was so big and fast, and with a system like that, they didn't need some of the big NHL names to contend for Gold.

For Russia, it is a huge accomplishment for a team that was so defensively challenged, and so limited by injuries to many of their best KHL-based players, to emerge in the Gold Medal game. If Bobrovsky plays like he did today, anything is possible! The pressure is all on Canada.

I believe that is from the lower skill level on international ice. With the speed and size that NHL players has there would still be a lot of body contact. But, yeah hybrid may be a good compromise. To be honest anything except the way it is now with the dump n chase all day and almost none midzone play.

Agree with you. Watched game 7 between Caps and Rangers. To much dump and chase and great to see north americans play a skilled game in Wc

Even if u factor in the value of a D1 scholarship, with 4 guys still in college. Another guy with no NHL resume about to be a free agent next year..., Jones and others still earning the NHL minimum, plus some journeymen, with , if memory serves, only one guy over 25 yadda yadda...These Kidz should be VERY Proud of themselves. combined Salary wise, there's NO COMPARISON btwn these teams. Had Yanks buried some of their glorious scoring chances, this game takes on a whole different complection. Russians looked very VERY vulnerable today; Brobovski saved their bacon.

Nope I won't congratulate Russians. They went 1-1 vs a glorified college team, and could EASILY Have lost BOTH GAMES...Big Deal

CONGRATS YANKEES!!!!

It was 4-0 dude. Would have been a wider margin if our coach knew what he was doing.

Why don't the best USA players come to the tournament?

Is it seen as more of a development thing?

In my mind there's a perception that going to the World Championships is a sign of being weak or not focused on winning the Stanley Cup. The overall talent pool is lesser, too. Look at how much criticism Ovechkin got for going to the tournament a day after being eliminated from the playoffs. Basically, players expected to win in the NHL shouldn't be so quick to pack up and fly overseas after getting eliminated from the playoffs..

I just wonder - the US got really tons of good chances: if Canada will get as many, they will just murder you. Very impressive attack but the defence does look very shaky...

we need the team effort from WC 2008 and even more the WJC team from 2011.
