I don't think we're at the stage of our development where "hoping" someone can become a number 1 is the smartest course of action.

Name me the last cup winner that won with a goalie getting paid a "proven #1" salary.

This is kind of false. He was never given a shot to even be a backup until a few years ago. He was given 1 game in the NHL by the Stars, the team that drafted him, which he allowed 6 goals in. His next game didn't come for another 3 season after he moved to the Kings.

AHL Stats
Jack Campbell
202 GP 2.74 GAA .910 SV% 14 Shutouts
Jordan Binnington
164 GP 2.48 GAA .915 SV% 10 Shutouts

Comparing these 2 because neither one of them were given a shot until later.
While that's fair, 1st for a goalie the jump to the NHL is never a sure thing ala sparks and MacIntyre so maybe his shot, even their shot didn't come because the teams assessed that they were not ready?
2nd for me it doesn't matter why he didn't play. The fact is he hasn't proven he can handle the starting position yet and that's the bottom line for me.
I am willing to see if he can handle the position and I'm hopeful he can as that really helps the team moving forward.

The worst course of action would be to pay and play some mediocre goalie just because he's received the opportunity to be a "number 1".

Lmao you weren't kidding, right from the very first paragraph:

"Some of the sizzle was gone. But the steak was supposed to still there. It wasn’t. For the Edmonton Oilers, that was hamburger."

What is it about Edmonton that makes people not bother to go back and check? First McDavid, now the reporters.

Vasi was just finishing up his 3yrs x $3.5m bridge deal.

This year is the first year he's being paid like a #1.
Hmmm fair, but he was the undisputed and would have been paid if not for the cap he'll they were in, so in the spirit of the post I'm going to think of it that way

Trust me, the rest of Canadian fans absolutely can’t stand this right now lol.

My non leafs fans have totally admitted how much they hate how much better the leafs are than their team.

My friends outside of Ontario are also telling me people are absolutely rattled with the leafs right now, especially with even more media coverage than before.

If we make it to the conference finals, or imagine, win the cup, you’ll see the absolute worst side of everyone lol.

The jealousy of the northern division is amazing. They all claim they want the Leafs in the first round, then double back on their statements after we clobber them.

If you go to other teams around the league talks. When we win. They don't say anything. When we lose they milk it.

It's hilarious how passive aggressive these boards get about the Leafs.

Don't ever forget that none of them admitted the leafs were better than their teams coming into the season.

Only NOW is it a weak division they should trample.

It's so exhausting. I am just going to avoid the main boards, right now every single thread is "lol Leaf fans getting cocky just wait until the playoffs".

I haven't seen a post about the Leafs that took any kind of effort or brain cells in a long time in those parts.

Holtby with Washington. 6.1 mill.

Crawford with Chicago. 6 mill on his last win.

Quick with LA. 5.8 mill on his last win.

Tim Thomas with Boston. 5 mill.

Fleury was also on PIT both years making big money even though Murray did a lot of heavy lifting in the playoffs.

Adjusting for cap, a lot of these guys would make around 7 mill on their cap hits. Most teams had some kind of very proven goalie carrying them to their wins. STL and PIT were extremely lucky with Murray and Binnington.

You don't need Bobrovsky or Price making 10+ mill, or even Vasilevsky making 9.5 mill, but you do need someone who can carry you. Maybe that is not Andersen, but going with Campbell is effectively hoping for another Binnington or Murray and that can burn you.

It will be interesting how things shape up in the North. Obviously Montreal is the favourite (they have the best built team by a landslide). But I think Leafs have enough jam to compete. We may not have a superstar like Weber, price or Suzuki but we have a chance.

probably 7.5 or something gross, you cant win with contracts like that.

He was never getting anything like that unless he won a Vezina or was like the Conn Smythe winner in the playoffs.

Based on his peak play, he was a goalie who would get around 8% on maybe a 5 year deal given his age, which is about 6.5 mill. He hasn't hit his peak in a while, and he wasn't getting in that 9-10% range without Cups, Vezina's, etc.

Now he is looking closer to Holtby's 5.28% on a two year deal. He should be happy if he can get his current money over 3 years based on the way he has played the past two years now, which would be 6.13%.

Crawford and quick came out of nowhere to win their first cups. Thomas did the same. Fleury was a cheap young goalie then was replaced by Murray out of nowhere.
