Mitch Marner played 77 games as a 19 y/o listed at 5'10" 164 lbs and put up 61 points, plus was effective in the post-season against a heavy Caps team. Not saying we should pencil Poitras in because of that, but it's something that impressed me about Marner's rookie year. Never know, Poitras might be ready for it.

2017 Caps vs. Leafs was one of the closest six game series I've ever seen. All one goal games and 5 were decided in OT.

I think you are right friend, our old friend Dom was all over Poitras long before camp began, me thinks Don and Cam and many others shocked at how comfortable he has looked

Shades of when Patrice Bergeron was at his first training camp- he literally made it impossible for the team to send him back down. Poitras is doing the same thing

Played against a basically full NHL roster tonight and didn't look like it was something he couldn't physically handle. Scored a goal and more than held his own on the third line. Now that I've seen him for the full camp just not seeing how another year in the OHL helps him. Being strong enough and physically ready were the main question marks. He's definitely looking like he is fine in those departments. I guess evaluate things after 9 games and see where things stand.

Only 2 questions left regarding Poitras as I see it:

- Does he have the strength and endurance to keep backing up night in night out against NHL opposition?

- In his last two games, against teams fielding pretty close to full NHL lineups, his on-ice SF percentages were 21% and 33%, and his CF percentages were 24% and 33%. So his lines got hemmed in pretty bad. Importantly the actual goal count was 3-1 in favor, and the kid can find the back on a net on a team that perhaps looks like not being particularly blessed in that regard. But those sorts of numbers around possession, shots and zone time aren’t sustainable in regular season games against quality opposition. Sooner or later you’ll start shipping too many goals.

To me these aren’t barriers, just concerns or things to evaluate and look out for. Basically impossible to argue that he hasn’t earned at least a trial. Let’s see if he can keep bringing it, and start to get the on-ice battle with opposing lines on more even terms while still packing the kind of scoring threat we’ve seen to date.

Bruins ranked near the bottom of prospect lists

3-4 guys have a legit case to make the team

hah

Really like Poitras game so far. Nice he won the defensive draw right before his goal tonight
I think rightfully so for the most part, they don’t have many high-end prospects that push systems up the rankings. The guys potentially making the team would be slotting in to depth spots, other than maybe Poitras who was a big surprise by most as he was ranked 3rd at the highest on most rankings.

But if the prospects work for the Bruins and go on to have impactful careers the rankings don’t mean much.

I just style of play. Poitras has that high end setup man gene, as the 2 I mentioned. Long way to go...LOL
I love Bergeron I’m sure 100% no doubt more than anyone here - yah definitely number one. Sorry @Ladyfan but you can be second

But Pederson pre tumor/first 5-6 years better then Bergeron & Oates was as well here and Blues days

Adam Oates was phenomenal my view next to Gretzky the greatest setup guy I’ve seen

As for Poiteas - we all love comparisons except for the guys on Twitter who call you a loser for making them (I’m sure like my kids these ‘winners’ are still on mommy and dads phone plan)

So to me using my vast knowledge of Bruins players I’ll give my Matt Poitras comp

He has a lot of Marc Savard offensive qualities

But his size, skating, smarts and competitiveness is Steve Kasper but like a shirt inside out - Kasper forte defense but solid offensive skills - Poiteas is the opposite

Poitras and future Montreal HOF Lane Hutson both fell for similarities- undersized and not elite skating

So I’m going hybrid here - two centers: Kasper & Savard

I apologize for those who don’t like this but if Matty P makes it or doesn’t it won’t be from pressure - this kid doesn’t let it bother him I’m sure (my comp there is Tom Brady)

Oh, boy. What to do?

It's pretty much unanimous that Poitras has earned the 9 games. What I don't get is how most give him the 9 games and then send him back . Shouldn't we see how he does before we make that determination?

The Bruins have a really easy schedule opposition wise to start the season with only the Panthers and Kings who have any hope of making the PO's . However, after 2 home games there is a 4 games in 6 nights road swing which will be an excellent early test for the kid(s).

Let's let this one play out before we make our determinations.
