Player Discussion Matthew Poitras II

I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a few scratches mixed in here or there and Geekie getting some C reps.
That wouldn't be a bad thing at all. The season is long and heavy, especially for 18-19 year olds.

Anaheim, for example, works wisely with Carlsson.

Something small I noticed in the behind the b video showing Beecher score and the dad’s reaction;

Poitras dad is sitting next to beecher’s dad and gives him a particularly loving level of verbal deposits and body language that make his dad come off as those things. In my experience working with kids, it’s the parents that have that energy that tend to raise exceptional kids and I just paused and thought about that for a moment because Poitras isn’t particularly gifted in any one department but his drive and hockey sense are just there and he has that same energy most of my exceptional students have had over the years.

Could be not at all connected but it struck me watching the video

Poitras staying with the B's. No WJC, roster just released
I don't think it is official? Previously NHL players don't get invited to the camp and aren't listed.

When the NHL team releases a player, they often get placed on the team without being named or attending camp.

Shane Wright wasn't one of the 29 players invited to last year camp, nor was Brant Clarke, however both were later named to the team.

Thought this was a major factor in moving on from Bruce and hiring Monty, more patience with youth.

If a coach thinks a rookie is struggling and needs to shelter him, he should.

The major difference between Cassidy and Monty seems to be communication. It's been reported that some players who ended up in the Cassidy doghouse would never hear from the coach on what they needed to do. Blidh pretty much confirmed that. Conversly, Beecher just went thru a game where he was a healthy scratch and when asked, said Monty took him into his office and they had a discussion on the things he feels Beecher needs to work on and the direction his game needs to go towards. I get the impression that both Monty and Cassidy have high standards when it comes to young players but that Monty has the better interpersonal skills to teach them

I don't agree with either benching, but so far I think Monty has been good coach for the young kids.

Communication is seemingly better that’s true, but I think his handling of Poitras has been pretty poor. I get he’s worried about closing out games but consistently burying the kid every 3rd period in tight games, even when he’s playing well, just seems fear based and putting off a problem that they need to address.

You can’t have a 3c on your roster that you don’t trust in close games, you need to either learn to trust him as he works thru the mistakes or you don’t dress him. It’s crazy to shorten the bench everytime the team is in that situation, especially when games get more important, it puts more on the rest of the team.

Not a fan (anymore after '23 playoffs) but I wonder if Butch would've kept 2-3 rookies on the team as Monty has this year? Maybe he was forced to? Like Cassidy, he also doesn't seem to have the testicular fortitude to bench veterans as he would rookies. Or to tell veterans in the SCP to sit out games when they say they're ready or to pull an obviously injured goaltender when he's stinking the joint out. IMO, this spring will shine a huge spotlight on him.

Any else annoyed with Monty’s handling of Poitras yet?
It would annoy me less if the "tried and true" vets that Monty keeps going with in the third hadn't blown multiple third period leads already, and still continue to get full diapers whenever the other team pulls their goalie.

Especially since by sitting the younger guys, by default the older players on the team are forced to play heavy minutes early in the season.

IMO Monty should be letting the younger guys play while dealing with the growing pains in favor of giving older guys rest. This way the younger guys are more battle tested and the older guys are more well rested.

Unfortunately it appears the opposite is happening.

I will never get on board with Monty after last years collapse, No coming back from that.

We have blown how many games with pulled goalies and without?

He keeps rolling out the same guys that have zero killer instinct that lose every battle to loose pucks in the most important time in a hockey game.

Its happened way to often since he's been the coach, Kelly as well.

26 games in and Monty had already bag skated the group, called out individual players in the press and pulled Swayman after giving up a couple of goals, now he's going after the low hanging fruit (kids)
Someone's feeling pressure

Seems so, and honestly it's kind of odd- no one expected this team to be tops in East or the league this season with the loss of 1-2Cs and the cap constraints. It felt like the goal was to make the playoffs and that is almost surely going to happen at this point. I wonder where the pressure is coming from and why.
