I don't know how it will played out. But, IMO, next year should be a battle between Murray, Gust and Daccord. Whoever plays better is the starter and the second is the back-up. We can have Soogard and Mandolese in the AHL.

Now, i'm sure Murray will get the veteran treatment which is fine. But I hope they don't bury Daccord or Gust if they play better then him.

I'm pretty sure they are playing Gust right now to make a decision on who to protect between the 3. Right now, he is doing well for himself.

Yeah but at the same time, how do you manage a 6.25 x 3 years contract if he doesn't make the team? Send him to the AHL? Trade him? Ok everything is possible but you'd have to take a similarly underperforming contract.

One thing for sure in my mind, you can't let Gustavsson unprotected. It's a complete 180 this year but he looks like he has serious starter potential.

They absolutely should leave Murray (and unfortunately Daccord) unprotected. With Murray's AAV x 3 years, his injury history and recent struggles and stats, there's a minmal chance the Kraken will take him. If they do, then you free 6.25 x 3, money that we could invest differently on the roster and run with a Gustavsson/Daccord duo.

That being said, not even sure Seattle would take Daccord, they will have several good options from the 30 other teams. Daccord has very little NHL experience, isn't a high pedigree goalie (like Gus) and is smaller than today's prototypical goalies. And if they pick him, it's not the end of the world as we have Murray, Gustavsson, Sogaard, Mandolese and Merilainen. A lot of potential in net and a 26 y/o goalie that already had a lot of success in the AHL and NHL.

"Show me a good goalie and I'll show you a good team" - Jeff Marek

I'm very excited about the future of our team, I'd even go so far as to say we could make the playoffs if it wasn't for the fact that's for the last 2 years we've been running without a starting goalie.

Couldn't we take on some salary and trade Murray to a team that wants to tank?

Our rebuild is over.

He is perhaps the worst goalie in franchise history.

I miss Craig Anderson.

If nothing else, he forced Ottawa to play Gus and we now know we have a real option going forward.

We'll see what happens when Murray comes back from injury, but damn...either he sucks or he's Hasek or he's injured. No stability.

I'll be amazed if Dorion can move him without having to retain or add a sweetner.

Forsberg only slightly less crap then Murray and doesn't cost $6 million smh.

I think we have a weak coach. That's 90% of our problems. Calgary is very thin in talent also, but their game is highly structured and well- rounded. I believe our team is not coached at all. DJ prioritizes people who are big and can move people from the crease. DJ is not good to make this team even slightly competitive. Yes Murray is doomed with a career ending injured left wrist. There is no way in hell any goalie would avoid to use a glove if his hand is not injured. And he does it all the time. But even with Gus, DJ could play 500 hockey easy, if the team will have a solid structure.

Yikes, short memory...

Not sure if Rals meant "worst" as in talent, but I would take it as far to say that the overall Matt Murray goalie stint in Ottawa is right up there with the worst.

Leclaire was one, Gerber another...Hasek to an extent.

All 3 (4 now) were "bargain bin" big name goalies the franchise tried to bring in to solidify the back end only to result in a massive fail everytime.

I disliked the Murray trade the moment it was announced because the way he won his cups in Pittsburgh to me was not typical of a star goalie; he was an average goalie in a superstar costume.

Murray is not injured, he is on the covid protocol sire.

Lalime was better. Gerber was better. Emery was better and he was a sparkplug (R.I.P). Who am I missing? Like seriously.

Murray is the worst.

Gerber sucked - I’m hoping Murray finds his game but I take him over Gerber all day. Leclaire and Murray about on the same level of “I thought this guy was good!?!”

LeClaire, Auld, and strongly disagree with you about Gerber.

There's context too, all the other goalies played behind a far more mature teams and defenses making their lives easier. Murray hasn't been great but the worst? I don't think so.

Murray is fine. Had shit start last year, outside of getting a knee in the head, he is fine and dandy.

Way overblown. Hasn’t had a chance to play in front of a NHL level D yet

still hasn’t won a game for Ottawa this year

I know, but if it isn't one thing it's the other with Murray. I realize you can't dictate when and if an injury is gonna happen - and that it's unfair to blame him, but damn...we'll be lucky to get 8 straight weeks of him in the next 2 years.

Best move is to just let Murray’s contract play out imo. Hopefully he plays more like he did at the end of last season going forward, but with Gus being so cheap, we are best just sucking it up.

Plus, we do ideally want to make the playoffs in the next two seasons. I suspect Gus will have the #1 job by then, but it’s not the worst thing in the world to have a two time Stanley Cup winner around either.

It’s not ideal to have a 6 mil cap hit on the guy, with even more in actual dollars, but because of what we pay Gus our goaltending tandem should be at a reasonable cost. He’s hardly a franchise sinking goalie, just a goalie not worth his price (thus far anyway).
