I was very unimpressed by the Pens fan who made the post on the main boards trashing Murray a couple of weeks ago.

I pressed him whether or not they've actually watched Murray this season, and of course they didn't.

"bUt tHe sTats"

It was so clear early on that the D was just pure trash around him. Inability to clear the crease, constant odd man rushes, just NO ONE was going to look good.

Goalie stats are very indicative of the TEAMS success, and always will be.

That's not to say Murray hasn't improved, because he has, but its obvious to everyone our D has improved as well.

This is Murray's second Pro team, ever, so its no surprise to me that there would be an adjustment process either.

Is it a surprise that he looks like a million bucks now, when we are playing night and day to where we were a week ago?

Unfortunately, we ain't getting Ws, but we are playing like we did last year, hanging in there with our opponents.

Murray has also mastered keeping his eyes hidden in the shade of his ball cap. What is he plotting?

Phenomenal effort. Easily his best game yet. He was extremely composed.

Murray is a fundamental goalie. When he is on his game his angles and movements are exceptional. When he is gittery and distracted, he is all over the place--last 3 games has fell in the former.

We give up a lot of high quality chances

28 SCA, 14 HDCA in ~52 EV mins last night...

The NHL median is like 25 SCA/60 and 10 HDCA/60 at EV

Thankfully PK was good, only 6 SCA and 2 HDCA in 3 full PPs. Against Edmonton it's considered good lol

Stats always have to be put in context to be valid. Like our forwards at the moment and the way DJ deploys players, just counter-productive so I don't expect much production.

Game #4 to Game #9 was a MAJOR problem defensively.

So the 6 road games after the 4-3 OT loss in Winnipeg. Was it Stepan or Gudbranson who took that penalty where the Jets closed the gap 3-2 at the end of the 2nd? The way we collapsed to defend in the 3rd, particularly at the end, the way DJ used vets in overtime, the comments made after the game... it kinda sent the team into an horror spiral. Thankfully they seem to have recovered but Brannstrom + Zub helps a lot too

But it's crazy how the personnel decisions have hurt the team so far this year, instead of the opposite. IMO DJ and Dorion are over their heads for their roles, they are assistant coach and AGM at best

If the team can play well in spite of them, that will be encouraging.

Which is a reflection of the structure in front of you. It gets very hard when you don't know what to expect from your defense. You overcommits on plays, you try to cover 2 shooters at the same time (look at Ennis goal for example), you get confused because your teammates don't do what they are supposed to, they don't clear rebounds, they hide your own view, they deflect pucks against you, they give up way too much time and space. Confidence is very important for a goalie and when you don't have that in your own team, it's really not easy. I remember in the best league I played, I had a guy that was like the Pronger of the league. I felt unbeatable when he was on the ice. It's like when they say you grow an inch playing with Chris Neil, it's the same for a goalie when you have good players and a good system in front of you, you feel BIGGER.

I repeat again as I can't stress enough about it : our defense structure/coverage was NOT NHL level from Game #4 to Game #9

Now it's just bad, but at least NHL level. Which gives a chance to the goalie to do the work.

Bump for Murray’s been playing great and everything you’d want. He’s been leading the group. Since his turnaround the team has turned around.

I find it hard to separate his underlying play from the downside of playing behind a young team with a well below average blue line.

Murray’s been fantastic this month (besides that relief effort of Hogberg but I’ll let that one slide). Good to see him turning things around

893 sv% in February(so far). We have very different definitions of fantastic.

If we not counting that Toronto game, still .912 for this month. Which is quite good still not fantastic.

Note, I am not including the game he came in for 9 save relief.

I will say though, that breakaway save against Toffoli in OT was CLUTCH. That's all we can really ask for, to get the saves needed to win.

He is .908 sv% in Feb, removing the TO game puts him at .924.

He had some clutch saves on Tuesday, but some weak goals as well. It was a battle of weak goals allowed between him and Carey, because both were making outstanding saves otherwise. Hopefully a solid game tonight.

Well, I should have read this first as I initially made my post to say this

Yea, I believe that's including the 9 save relief he came in for. I counted the games where he was credited for win or loss

Matt Murray

The 9 saves relief doesn't change much for his SV%, it's 9 saves out of 250, but it lowered his GAA since no GA in 34 mins

Didn't see any "weak goal" in my after game analysis. Maybe the Weber bullet because it was from a distance? The guy has a 100+ mph shot though

If I'd listen to HF, 50% of goals scored in the NHL are weak lol

A weak goal is Tkachuk's 2nd on Price, or Brannstrom's goal, or the 7th Toronto goal the other day, or the goals where Hogberg was totally out of position for no reason.

I thought he should have had the unscreened shot from the point, and I remember being unhappy about another. But it was in the emotional charge of watching the game live, so I’ll take you analysis at face value :)

Looking better and better. Contrast his maturity of owning a bad performance by going to face the media , unprompted, compared to Price who is taking a lot of heat for his dealing with the media following last night's game
