Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894 (Continued)

What I try to do is teach the kids the Canadian way. What we have to watch is we don't start acting like those goofy soccer guys. Now watch Ovechkin... scoring an empty net goal with 1 second left to make a 5-3 game a 6-3 game. Act like Joe Thornton, act like Sakic, act like Iginla, Shanahan, Bobby Orr, Yzerman, guys like that, now you know, I'm gonna tell you about this guy, he's got a free ride, he scores empty net goals, does this stuff, I am predicting someone's gonna get him and someone's gonna get him good, there's somebody out there, some big defenseman is gonna be sitting in the weeds, as he cuts across center ice, somebody's gonna cut him in half. You don't act like this, this is goofy stuff, and the same guys that thought this was entertainment last year thought Averey was entertainment, it's the same church, different pew, the same junk, and don't you Canadian kids act like it, act like Jason Strudwick .
A classic. Paired with a flamboyant wardrobe.

He's still got one hell of a shot, but God damn is he bad otherwise.
Sorry you didn’t get a chance to see him before he broke his leg. Gets a little better each game back though IMO.

I know people have said (many times) in here that it would be hilarious if he broke the record with an empty net goal.

But it really wouldn't. Imagine that being the history making, record breaking video clip? Awful.

Okay, but what if he broke the record with the hat-trick completing Empty Netter. That would mean they probably show all 3 goals, and we get to see 3x the highlight whenever they talk about it

Yes of course that would be a completely different scenario and a great way to break the record.

Unless it’s a 1 goal game and he has no other option but to shoot it, I guarantee he would go out of his way to pass it to someone else. That’s exactly what he did when he had an open shot for an ENG that would have passed Howe, and chose to pass it to Kuzy instead… only to have Kuzy throw it right back to him.

Even tonight, you could tell he was embarrassed/self conscious about hurrying too much to get the shot off to beat the buzzer.

No argument, in principle. But when was the last time you watched – or even remember – Gretzky's record-breaking 802nd goal? How important is any single goal when the real story is the massive total of goals scored over many years? No right or wrong answer, naturally. Just curious.

Regardless of how #895 happens, I'm guessing it'll be rewatched as a much longer highlight reel of all the goals that came before... and after. Gretzky and Ovechkin's legends are built on 'the most', not necessarily 'the best'.

An empty net goal is within the rules. If this happened, to me, such a record-breaking goal would stand like a symbol for all the goals he has scored in the regular season.

He’s gonna do it….one ENG at a time. He's got six this year and his record is nine! Just a fun fact…Gordie Howe had 12 in his career. Game sure has changed.
Empty net points for top scorers are up all across the board. Teams are no longer throwing out their 3rd/4th lines in the final minutes to try and defend. Also teams are pulling the goalies way earlier. It just is what it is, times change.
