I still think it's tough to judge him behind this defence, but those two games against the Canucks are two of the worst goaltending performances this team has seen in awhile.

Feels like literally any goaltender would get shelled with Coburn/Brown on the ice, that being said I can't defend what I've seen from him the last few games.

Feel like any goalie would get shelled with Colborn, Brown, Wolanin, and Reilly....

let that sink in ...

Shelled yes.

Andy was also shelled. But he made saves.

D has a part in Murray’s performance, but he is still playing badly IMO.

I think so ... but goalies are hard to evaluate.

Anderson never had a defence or team this bad. The Sens have about 6-7 players playing average+ hockey and the rest are close to replacement level.

So, we can calculate the difference between actual GA/60 and the xGA/60. We can also calculate an xSv% by using shots against divided by xGA. Once we have that, we can find the difference between actual and expected, and see how they rank.

Out of the 62 goalies here's how ours fared...

Goals against above expected/60 Sv% above xSv%
Marcus Hogberg.607 (41st out of 62)-.005% (
35th out of 62)
Matt Murray1.536 (57th out of 62)-.0371% (55th out of 62)
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

I feel like Murray fails the eye test myself, the fancy stat test doesn't seem to like him either. This suggests Murray allows an extra goal and a half per 60 mins (5v5) and his sv% is .0371 pts lower than expected (so an average goalie would be expected to have a sv% of .904% in his situation instead of his .867)

If Dorion wanted a Cup winning starting goalie he could have just signed Holtby.
And there were other free agent goalies on the market (free agents) as well. I think there were probably equivalents at a lower price and term, especially if the Senators were willing to entertain more of a 1a & 1b concept.

Good news is Murray is getting 1 of his 4 years out of the way in this shortened season. Well I guess that’s good news.
If it lands us Owen Power or Brandt Clarke I'm game. Wish there were more forward options in the top 3 but another stud on D would be cool too

Clarke, Johnson or Guenther for me then Beniers or Power.

Yeah, it's a tough year to have strong feelings about one draft eligible over another, so i won't argue. By this point in a normal year we'd have 30 games or more of each and lots of movement would happen as a result.

A lot of my preference is based on need. I loved Clarke’s game after the coaching change last year and Johnson is an offensive beast at centre. Guenther is a goal scoring heavy player at RW. Biggest org need is RD IMO (goalie).

Matt Murray vs Connor Mcdavid and Leon Draisaitl

TOMMOROW NIGHT!!!

Get your tickets now before its too late!!

Don’t think any of the goals last night were his fault. He’s been awful this year but he was just a casualty of a terrible team last night.

He should start on Tuesday.

Certainly Mike Reilly is in contention here.

And Cedric Paquette.

All guys added in the last year.

I’ve never seen an NHL player be so feeble and have literally zero ability to win you a game. I can’t think of a legit Senators player who has had zero impact on helping his team win and contributed nothing for his roll.

Matt Murray is a tank commander

I'm still not ready to hang this guy out to dry 9 games into his contract.

I get it I'm not very happy but I really think this is not a fair environment to completely blame goaltending.

9 games is not enough you know.

We going to retain a chunk and package a 2nd for Seattle to pick him up if he doesnt get his shit together or we buy out. No worries. I am more upset Hogberg is also playing terribly.

They pulled Murray once they realized we were gonna get shelled. Murray was mad but I don’t think he realized why we were pulling him. We weren’t trying to win the game, we were protecting our fragile new 6 million $ goaltender from letting in 11 goals last night and being completely embarrassed

Yeah hope DJ have a good talk after the game with him.

This guy was lucky enough to win two cups by the age of 25, that is a huge deal and in the karma world, you have to expect some bad luck to follow at some point.

Did anyone really think this guy was going to win 3-4 cups in his career? Trading for him was a bad idea, you have to question if the hunger and drive to win is still there.

Maybe Murray is doing this on purpose after seeing our dmen. He wants Owen Power more than any of us.
He tried the first few games, now is all in on hit the shower for power.

my favorite article. Read the line "Murray is only 26-years-old and could improve, but the fact that Pittsburgh is even shopping him tells you everything you need to know."
Toronto Maple Leafs Should Not Pursue Matt Murray

Pascal Leclerc all over again....Not the goalie coach, not DJ. not the bad defense...Injuries..he is no longer the player he was...This was known in October. The chatter during the bubble was all about his injuries. Namely his concussions.

This is on Dorion..and his pro scouts that cannot find water if they were standing at the oceans edge.

The defense in terms of personnel was quite better all the way but most importantly, it was structured more professionally. Guy Boucher and MacLean weren't that bad and I would take anyone of them in a hurry right now.

Look at what Paul did in 2012-13 when the Sens had several key injuries : Spezza (5 GP), Michalek (23 GP), Karlsson (17 GP), Cowen (who had a pretty good rookie season in 2011-12, his only good one actually, 7 GP), etc. With many key injuries and limited personnel, MacLean instaured a pretty good defensive system and they were actually "boxing out" the opposition pretty well, with a strong PK (finished 1st in NHL). The "healthy" D-men were : Gonchar (38 y/o, was really great that season), Methot, Phillips (34 y/o), Wiercioch (was good that season, that's what happens when you have good coaching), Gryba and Andre Benoit.

Even Dave Cameron, even if probably not a NHL head coach, had some good things going. We were giving up more shots than now, but the quality of shots against was proportionally not that high (backed by advanced stats)

Yes, Murray (and Hogberg) can absolutely be better, of course but they'd literally need to stand on their head just to have a 0.900 SV% right now

I said a few games ago the Sens were an automatic 3 goals against, I'm thinking 4-5 now. I guess some Sens fans would need to see Daccord come in and get shelled as well to understand that goalies are far from being the main problem. Yes, everyone has a part of the blame but the main roots are 1. coaching/system/structure 2. defense personnel (GM built)

ok single out Murray... but how come Hogberg has a worse SV% then?
