This deal is looking good for Lou early on. Some people not Isles fans laughed at Lou for making the deal. Looks like he fleeced Dumbass since Matt has fit in seamlessly back on the Island and has looked very good. 2 goals in 5 games, and the Cizikas(3 goals, 2 assists in 5 gp) line has not missed a beat since he rejoined it. Also provides protection to Barzal and other skilled players. Too bad Dion didn't want to drop them last night, I recall seeing him take shot a Eberle. But he has been a great add to the bottom 6.

No doubt Marty has helped re-invigorate Casey and Cal, who hadn't really been the same without him.

And he's simply a face of the team type of guy who this community loves. Sure, he's overpaid, but he's an Isles and an identification figure. You know what he brings and you don't need more from him.

Alas, I think most of us expected just that. No-one cared to see him go a few years back. We all just knew he wasn't worth THAT dough.

Not a problem now. Lou and Trotz wanted 3rd and 4th lines that do for this team what the 3rd and 4th lines did for Washington last season and for many season in Jersey.

Martin is a good part of that and we certainly cannot be upset with them to date. They get their job done.

Once more goals come from the first two lines, things could look real cool around Islanderville.

The production is a bonus the way I see it. But what I love is they bring energy that is not measured in fancy stats. Martin also gives the Isles a presence. When a game gets out of hand, you know he is there for the boys. Also Trotz is not afraid to have them out there in any given situation. This is huge trust for a supposed 4th line. Outstanding deal by Lou. 2M for 2 years is such a small price to pay for what Martin is bringing for 2 years of Lou wiping away years of a losing mentality.

I was one of the people who didn’t want Matt Martin back, especially since we’ve already signed Ross Johnston to a silly contract. But you can’t deny that Martin has rejuvenated Cal Clutterbuck. And I also have to defer to Barry Trotz’s desire to have Martin for the intangibles he brings to the room (the statheads are gonna hate that because you can’t quantify intangibes). Trotz specifically went to Johnston and said he’s not scratching him from the LA game for poor play. He said it was the second of a B2B and he wanted Martin’s presence in the room to be fed off of. Translated to a goal for MM also.

So maybe we need to tap the brakes and give Lou and Trotz the benefit of the doubt when they acquire and play guys who aren’t analytics darlings. They’ve been part of a pro locker room and know what kind of chemistry certain guys bring and how players feed off of that.

Well said. The stats heads can't quantify it. But since MattyMarts has come back home. He has brought in a fresh new attitude to the Isles. I am also a sucker for cute dogs as per his twitter pic. They may not be the most talented team, but with Komarov also, they are starting to become the most character team in the NHL. It was a pretty decisive bounceback game last night. Got to like guys that put on the work boots and show pride in the jersey. Martin has been a big part of this.

As far as Martin and Johnston go I think this year we may see them split games. Maybe neither one of them plays 60 games this year. Trotz will dress them judiciously as the situation dictates. Will probably give the guys on the “Lou’s a dinosaur” bandwagon a chance to bitch about why are we picking up Martin’s salary and he only dresses 60% of the time but I don’t care.

I see no reason to take Martin out, and put in Johnston.

Matt Martin is not duplicated ...Not a knock against Johnson but you can try and copy Matt Martin till he cows come home, But theres only one Matt Martin. Anyone talking otherwise forgets what the last 2 yrs were without him. Theres guys in the top 6 that aren't and won't carry the mail this year.
Unfortunate but it is the case...

This is a hustling and hard hitting team now - Lou style hockey- and one guy who doesn't fit the bill is Brock Nelson. I suspect Lou watches him play while gritting his teeth and swallowing handfuls of Rolaids.
Two throwbacks to the bad old days (last year) were Halak and Nelson - one down and one to go.

Hell, with the way Clutterbuck and Martin are playing right now compared with how Nieds is doing (0+1 in 7 games), I'd gladly do it again.

Other than he has just 2 points Nelson has been ok so far. He isn’t a center I don’t care how much they play him there. He won’t be on this team next year in any event.

The Isles have the most overpaid fourth line in the league. Martin was a healthy scratch in TO on more nights than not. All NY did was help the Leafs with the salary cap by making this trade. Probably helps them with future deals as well. If LL is going to trade for a guy the Leafs couldn't wait to unload then you need to get value in return. It's bad asset management by Lou. He could have tried for a young goalie in the Leafs system as a throw in. IMO it was a move to help out Toronto and his old friend Dubas.

You mean the goalie who is better than either of our current duo?

Counterpoint:

Clutterbuck and Cizikas are making a ton of money. Adding Martin improves the value the team is getting out of those two.

The good news is 3 2 1 . after this season Clutter has 3 left Cizikas has 2 left and Martin has 1 left. Basically when the 2018 and 2019 picks are NHL ready all 3 players are pretty much gone or getting paid less elsewhere. At this moment our salry cap issues are by far the least of any of our problems, in fact it's one of strengths.

That's good news.

Clutterbuck still has three years left AFTER this one?

You gotta me kidding me. He really wouldn't have signed a deal for one year less?

That's three full years AFTER this one where we'll be paying $6.5M per year cap hit to Clutterbuck and Komorov.

Awful and too typical of this franchise.

The good news is at this time those guys aren't hurting the team from acquiring the players necessary to build a championship team. I full expect buy outs and whatnot when the time comes. Definitely not going to sweat the Clutterbucks and Komorov's of the team right now.

I'll disagree. In the short-term the Islanders have cap space, no doubt. However, you take a closer look and consider:

- Expiring ELCs for Barzal, Beau and Pulock.
- UFAs in Lee and Eberle
- Albatross contracts in Ladd, Boychuk, Komarov (some might say Leddy but I'm not there yet)

The Islanders salary cap situation will look drastically different this time next year and not necessarily for the better. We are one more bad contracts away from being in serious trouble (especially if they plan to make a splash in UFA or via trade)

We've thought the same thing about a lot of other teams over the years, somehow their GM's have almost always managed to work around it. There are ways to get rid of bad contracts and I think Lamoriello will be able to do that.

Lamoriello was able to get rid of Phaneuf’s contract in Toronto. I believe he’ll be able to move some of our bad contracts. Might be Clutterbuck’s. Might be Boychuk’s. Provided both stay healthy of course. Doubt it will be Ladd’s.

I think Ladd is getting that compliance buyout if it comes.
