Mason McTavish - One of the greatest plays in WJC history?

I'll put it another way ...

Substitute USA for Canada and Canada for Finland in yesterday's game, and you guys would rightly be mocking us for hyperbolic exaggeration in a similar thread.

Not every desperate swipe and lucky bounce is fodder for Canada's burgeoning "legendary play" pantheon.
That's fair but I think this is special - given Canada's love of the WJR's and how close it was to ending the GMG in OT.

Pretty bad take…. If mctavish doesn’t do that kj never gets a chance to win the game. It’s not like mctavish accidentally made that play.

This to me is equivalent to the Jeter flip play in 01 vs the As…. Just mind boggling game sense and will to win.
You could chain a series of events back to the opening faceoff that would have had a game-changing effect had one of them gone differently. That's hockey. That's sport. That's life.

I'm obviously in the minority here, but it was a nice, not legendary, well-timed play.

Congrats to Canada for the well-deserved gold. I'm out ...

If the roles were reversed, I can guaran-damn-tee that I would be singing the praises of whichever American pulled off that miracle play, just as many non-Canadians have throughout this board.

The fact that a single play has by itself garnered four pages of forum buzz provides the evidence of just how special this moment was.

The emotions and situational elements of a hockey play need to be considered too.

It's a tournament-saving play in a do-or-die situation. A play in the 1st period is not remotely comparable to one in overtime because the stakes are not as high and the game can still be saved if it goes in.

If McTavish misses that puck, it's over.

100% this play will be attached with his name forever. It's an iconic moment.

Well said.

Tremendous play to cap an awesome tournament
It really did turn out to be a terrific tournament. So nice to have high quality hockey in August - and fix what was broken in December. I am so glad I watched.

I wish it was USA, it would be one of my favorite hockey memories of all time and not just an incredible play I'll never forget.

Lol at people downplaying Mcctavish's game saving/winning play in OT in a gold medal game... im not Canadian but how the hell did you watch that and not be absolutely amazed and entertained. I selfishly wanted finlad to win just because of Kemmel, but that game was incredible and the best I've seen since the Eberle goal without a doubt. I haven't watched very year since then but I'm glad I did this year.

Again LOL at people downplaying this. Was as epic as it gets.

It's automatically the best goal line miracle save by a player that comes to mind now. The hand eye coordination and reflexes to be able to hit that puck down like that and clear it in OT of a gold medal game and then for Canada to head back the other way shortly after and Kent Johnson puts it away from a nice feed from Stankoven.

Watching this on loop today.

Can't even imagine what was going through Garand's mind as that puck is flipping over.

You think it's curtains and there is #23 to save the day.

Just an all-timer for Mason McT. Such a mature, calm demeanor, and it truly was an honour to have him dawn the C for this tournament.

Kid has that hunger and will to win you cannot teach - which is going to lead him to do great things in his career.
