Mason McTavish - One of the greatest plays in WJC history?

Obviously he didn't score the goal but that play, the difficulty of it with the puck in that spot under those circumstances, and on the backhand even...has to be one of the best plays I've ever seen at the juniors.

Agree/Disagree?

Just noticed for the first time if the Finnish player had stayed with the play instead of prematurely celebrating he likely could have poked iit in. They weren't even covering him at that point. Hard to blame him since it was so improbable the puck could be stopped but this will definitely be a "what could have been" moment for that guy.

Edit: Just saw that another poster already pointed this out in post #16.

Insane play. If he hits it 1/4 second later, it's in the back of the net. 1/4 second too early, he misses it completely.

Just to turn this on its head a bit: if Finland had actually scored on that play, how much would Canadian fans be losing their minds over the fact that McTavish was tripped behind the net, leading to the chance on goal? On a scale of 1-5 Vancouver Stanley Cup Riots, I'd say it would be a 4.

I mentioned this in another post...

TBH, the Finnish player never made contact with McT's skates - look really closely. His fall must have been ice related. It is probably why the ref did not make the call.

He made contact with McT's shins, causing him to fall. That was a penalty. I'm glad we don't have to find out how upset people would be.

Really? I watched it many, many times and I saw no contact - I could be wrong. Maybe someone has a freeze frame.

You were looking at his skates, and possibly saw the later part of the play. The first video I looked at didn't include the initial 3 on 1 sequence, so I had to find a longer video.

It was definitely a trip, and the second uncalled one in the game on McTavish. FTR, I'm with Statsy: contact on the shins leading to McTavish going down.

FTR As a ref, I'm not sure I make that call. In OT, you're looking for things a lot more blatant than that. Regardless, someone would have put that clip on repeat and fans would have lost their minds,

It's going to go into TSN highlight montages. It was a remarkable display of hand-eye coordination.

Not that I don't think he's good, can we all stop hyping WJC prospects like they're going to be the next superstar in this league?

We did it with lots of players such as Cody Hodgson who had possibly the best tournament of any player. Let's not all forget they're not quite playing against men. It's basically the mere equivalent to post-secondary school and the NHL is the real world.

In a word... No.

Don't lose sight of the fact that this is sport and it's all for fun, at least from a fan's perspective. To the broadcasters, teams and leagues it's a business and they gain by hyping up the player and getting the fans excited. As fans we just want to BE excited and there is nothing better for that than seeing the next superstar come in to focus.

As for Hodgson, it's unfortunate that he never became the guy we were hoping for at the NHL level, but it happens. Perhaps if he hadn't had the injury issues that consistently plagued him, it might have turned out different.

But let's also be clear that he was never at the level that Bedard is at in regards to accomplishments at a young age. His monster WJC was post draft for him, so he was 18 or 19, unlike Bedard who just turned 17. Hodgson was also a 10th overall pick, not 1st. Tenth! 'Nuff said.

Well... let's just say I'm not Jesse Pollock who hypes a player because they're drafted by the Jets. I'm simply a guy who will say 'show me what they can do at the NHL level.' Rob Schremp is another guy worth mentioning.

Being excited is good, but sounding delusional is a lot worse. That's what it sounds like to me.

Yes, fans in Canadian cities are always going to amplify the hype. In fact, that was part of the problem with Hodgson.

As for Bedard, I absolutely do see him as an NHL superstar, just like when I watched both McDavid and Crosby in junior. You could just see it. However, the future has yet to be written so no one can say for sure.

I do agree with Bedard more than most prospects, on the same tiers of Crosby and McDavid.

How well did you see it? Even watching on TV, I didn’t fully understand what happened until the game was over and we saw the replays.
I could see at the time that the puck was definitely going in past the goalie, and thought it would be game over. Then saw him stop it and pull it off the goal line. Didn't quite know at the time exactly how he pulled it out of the air on his backhand, but knew he stopped a sure goal in some amazing fashion.
