Was she sick for a while? Was she local?

Might explain the nature of the trade rather than just a rift over Team Canada.

Horrible situation to be in.

Imagine it turns out she lives in TB?

But yea that's as good a theory as any as to why he was so insistent on being traded. Maybe he'll pull a Favre or the team will rally around him. Couldn't fault him for no-showing today

Well now I feel bad for ripping a player whose mother was on her death bed.

In a few of the twitter feeds it says "unexpected", so I'm not sure that he's been playing with a heavy heart. Either way, crappy news for MSL. :(

Conflicting reports. Some said she had been ill for awhile, and other said it was "unexpectedly."

IIRC from all the trade drama his family was with him in Tampa helping with the kids while his wife's family was back home in CT. So his mom would have been in Tampa with them while the trade was happening. However everyone was from CT to begin with and perhaps he needed to get closer to home knowing his mom had fallen ill and could very well be why he asked for the trade.

Could you imagine if that was the real reason and all along you have these judgmental and self-righteous ding dongs blasting the guy for forcing the trade over an Olympic snub? That would be something, it's still just speculation but if it turned out to be true a lot of people should be ashamed of themselves.

Edit: Not to get back in to the HFBoards Enquirer status here, but she could have been ill for a long time and still died unexpectedly. It really depends on the illness.

Meh people that judge will always judge whether they have the facts or not.

Personally, I didn't criticize MSL and we'll never know all of his reasons.

Salary, minutes given to him that could have been given to younger players to advance their careers, the option of having a lesser valued player do his role and use that money elsewhere = all assets.

Not to mention, the team clearly didn't advance any farther they then have in the past, so he should have been dealt at the deadline for a 3rd or 4th, since that would improve the team's chances of building a winner down the road. So him being on the team cost them hockey assets as well.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic.

Any move that doesn't bring a Cup is a waste of assets?

That is too simplistic to be serious.

I hope.

Awful news, the boys need to rally around him, they need to win this game regardless of if he plays or not. Family is part of the team, dig deep and win it for Marty if you don't have the gall to win it for yourselves

Are you saying we should never criticize a player, or anyone else, because they may have a personal problem?

Come on, that's great movie talk, but if they need that to be motivated, they should all retire.

She was in Montreal. She had a lengthy undisclosed illness so she had been in the hospital for a while where she had a heart attack.

No you don't criticize someone for something you don't know anything about outside of speculation from a bunch of people who don't know what they are talking about. How would you like it if a bunch of people were trashing your entire career for completely baseless reasons when in reality it was a very personal and sensitive situation that you couldn't come to the media with?

It's one thing to blast him for his play since he arrived, since no one could have known something personal might have been on his mind, but the way people immediately threw him under the bus because of the trade was so ignorant and unnecessary. People love to throw stones and burn witches without ever considering they don't know the whole story.

It may provide greater motivation, and I wouldn't say it is movie-esque. A guy on my team's father died right before we went and won regionals handily a few years ago, I'd say that extra emotion helped us a bit
