That wide open cage is pretty bad but he played a good game last game better than the rest of themI guess you’re still putting together the plus/minus chart from last night
Yeah, not a good read with half the net showing; I won't argue that. He did hit a one timer earlier on so there's that.
Maybe a phantom assist on the 1st goal as the best I can see (on my phone) is he redirected a puck to AM. At very least though, it was a good read to see that AM had a lane to the net and he let him have the puck. He also found AM in the slot earlier for a sitter than AM uncharacteristically duffed.
Pretty good bounce back game for him as the two before that were hideous by any standard.

Holy crap why didn’t he just shoot it into the open net. It’s stuff like that why he isn’t worth his contract let alone a bigger one

you'll need to start including "points from the blueline" in your line combo points per 60 comparisons

If this play continues he may want out and nobody will have to worry about him re-signing.

I mean he obviously should have shot it but it was good (imo) that he set up 2 goals* over the course of the rest of the game

Marner is a talent, without a doubt and if this league did not have a salary cap everyone would want him on the Leafs, but we have a cap, and all fans know that we need Cale Makar type more than Marner type under our system. Even if he just walks, the 10m ìf handled right can enhance this team.

Signing UFAs with the $10m would be fine if they were a contender and were filling in a couple of pieces. Where the Leafs are, they’d be wasting money and even worse, time.
The best option was to trade him for young assets.
Feels like there's 1 Makar type in the league and I think the Avs are going to keep him. There's some really great D, not sure you're getting any for Mitch at the moment, but Makar-type is pretty rare

Live, you can see that the goalie is already moving over, and that side of the net would not all be open.
Live, you can see that the defender is already moving over, and there's a good possibility that they would be able to block the shot (with a player exiting the box).
Live, you can see that they were trying for quick tic tac plays to create movement, which is very common on 5v3s.
Live, you can see that not shooting there results in the best goal scorer in the world getting a teed up unblocked slap shot from the faceoff circle two seconds later.
It's a decent shot opportunity, and maybe he should have shot, but one would think that after all of the times Boston, Tampa, etc. have burned us with the touch pass instead of a shot in a position like that, people would understand that shooting isn't the only option, especially on a 5 on 3. Players make hundreds of split second decisions every game, and we can post misleading freeze frames to criticize every single one we don't like, or dismiss beautiful primary assists creating goals because of the location of the passer (lol), but we all know that Marner was the best Leafs on the ice that night.
Not only is that not true, but getting rid of Marner doesn't get you a Makar. It gets you overpaid mid-tier UFAs that provide less impact than Marner.
