Sure, but the team was stacked and Eichel basically was Marner. Barely scored any goals and had a bunch of primary assists so it’s funny how we praise Eichel for that type of performance but shit on Marner for doing the same. Eichel had 6 goals in 22 playoff games and I don’t think he scored any goals in the last two rounds of the playoffs.

Same thing with Matthew Tkachuk last year. Goal scoring was non existent, racked up assists but he’s looked at as a playoff GOAT. While Reinhart, Verhaghe and Bennett did all the heavy lifting
If anyone praised him it’s because he performed well and didn’t get pushed out. That’s kind of big difference and it’s the only knock on Marner’s on ice performance.

Ray Ferraro didn’t use the term disinterested when describing any of the players you mentioned above.

If we are removing the cup and focusing on individual performance, I’d say both Marner and Rantanen and possibly even Aho have out performed him just on individual performance alone.
As a sportsnet reporter pointed out, when you play with Marner whose standing on the perimeter and not going to the net... its difficult to produce points.

Additionally, Keefe and Marner himself have pointed out that teams over defend Matthews. Marner has said its up to him and the other winger to attack the open areas.

Heres are graphics from 2024 series of Matthews best playoff game with Domi and Bertuzzi and a graphic of Marners best. Whose invisible and whosr not?

now that we can actually talk about things that happened this nhl season instead of regurgitating the same 10 points back and forth:

Marner looked good out there for the most part, a couple of times where he really needed to shoot or look to shoot. That pk rush he should've thought shoot all the way, a couple of times where he really just needed to shoot instead of passing the puck, but he was pretty good at winning battles and keeping the puck in

He's had almost a decade in the league. We needed him to get rid of this over passing instincts like 5 seasons ago.

Not good enough, but he usually starts slow, and ends slow(playoffs).
Can Marner be like Nylander? It would make this team better.

I don't expect it to change tbh, it's just a flaw we will have to live with and hope he can still be effective come playoffs with this pass first mentality

plus it's much more refreshing to talk about something new, as a pure observation, even if I don't like the player all too much

It really doesn’t matter what he does in the regular season, playing alongside a top-2 center and on a #1 power play unit with 4 forwards making 11+ million.

We go through this every year. At some point, like the last five seasons, certain posters will start comparing him to Gretzky againconveniently forgetting his playoff results and that this is just another Groundhog Day.

What matters is the playoffs, and how he performs when the opposition plays desperate, physical hockey. But that hockey is still a long way off. And this is a contract year. Personally, I dont think 8 year contracts should be based on a contract year. They should be the handful of years before them.
