TSN Intermission talked about the organization being worried about pressures on Marner and how to insulate him from the noise and how this is one of the main reasons why Keefe would walk back his statements. Don't like that fragility angle.

Says he doesnt know why the cosch needs to back off from saying things like our elite players werent elite

Says he has a theory. "I dont think Matthews is bothered by this stuff, he shakes it off. The player who made the most comment about it on the day off was Marner...I think you have to understand who can handle that and who cant", wonders if they just want Marner to be comfortable

Man, people really love massively overreacting to nothing comments.
Nah, we're just going to have to go through the exact same shit we went through last year, because apparently it ain't just the team that's caught in a Groundhog Day loop...

Marner can check out for 5-10 games, go pointless, no energy with that Matthews would be slumping too and the team is on a losing streak on purpose..... and the coach will get fired. Marner has the control, Keefe cant get rid of Marner if they have differences, its Keefe who loses his job. That is why the coach backed off.

Marner with Babcock
Marner during and after Game 7s
Marner with Keefe
Marner during and after signing his contract
Marner's dad's comments early in his career

It's becoming obvious the guy lets things get to his head a lot more than his teammates

Doesn't this just play into the exact reason why Keefe backed off in the first place? Because the media was going to make a big deal out of it? I guess they are not making a big deal out of his retraction but if he didn't, then they would make a big deal out of the fact that they did not play elite again yesterday.

I know the media could care less if the Leafs would win, and care about getting the "scoop", but the Leafs would be a lot more successful without the media blowing things out of proportion all of the time. If Keefe didn't feel like the media would make his comments a bigger deal than they were, he wouldn't have felt the need to clarify himself.

Headline reads : Youngster Nicky Bobby saves Leafs $11 mil grown men from another loss as they fire blanks.

Play the Kids and call out the Vets. :wg:

Keefe made some comments about the star players, media of course blew it way out of proportion. Keefe had a conversation behind doors with the leadership group, same as any other team. Keefe then tried to clarify his statements to the media because he saw how they and some fans have completely overreacted to something minor.

This is honestly nothing, but of course the media in Toronto is trying to make it something. I guess this is what happens when people overreact after 4 games into the season.
It was nothing but turned into something after Marner and Mathews injected their comments and then Keele backtracking just made it fairly large. Lol!

It is a stupid hockey saying been used by coaches for years .. it usually means exact opposite .. usually you'll hear your coach say "play like men not boys" .. for so many years he has heard it thru junior and pro .. it get ridiculous how many times you hear it .. most guys tune it out .. but it gets ingrained in your vocabulary
Another one is “we are just going to have fun.’ WTF. That is something houseleague coaches tell their kids to do. A grown man making millions per year shouldn’t have the attitude I’m just going out for fun.

Mitch Marner... alot of smoke abour Mitch Marner having thin skin. Usually guys with credibility like Friedman aren't gonna just make this stuff up.

The best part is management has Marner wearing an A!

Hopefully the prema donna is being shopped. He's been incredibly fortunate since juniors with his lineages. Send him to a team where he has to be a primary star to produce and watch him crumble.

IMO most of the Toronto media needs to be fired into the sun. Wanna know why the Leafs have to overpay for players all the damned time? This is why. Who the f*** wants the media constantly digging around looking for stories to blow out of proportion in a desperate attempt to get some kind of "scoop"?

All media everywhere. Many cities. Do you think a New York Yankee gets a vacation from the massive baseball media? Do they scare away baseball players. Hardly.

Agreed. I thought he was a little better last season, but in the past...not so much.

Indeed.

Toronto sports media is as softcore as it comes. No surprise this team and management group find them a challenge.

They're almost all co-workers for the same two companies for crying out loud

What are the odds, do you think, that reporters in New York chase Aaron Judge around trying to find out how he feels about other players on the team? How many reporters in New York would be willing to call up players' families and ask them why members of the Yankees are playing like dog shit?

It's not any sports media; the sports media in Toronto are permitted to do things that in MOST cities, would get them fired... Or at least asking why they're wasting time on shit like this.

The only time I can think of when reporters from other cities are allowed to pull shit like this are when the team is clearly dysfunctional and the arguments are spilling out into the media, but that doesn't fit the current situation. Yes, they haven't had playoff success, but the management isn't dysfunctional. Do you really think this is a public spat that's bubbling into the media? No, this looks more like the media trying to CREATE a public spat out of nothing.

Except the players did this to themselves demanding all the money but then dont back it up and can't take the heat. Maybe next time take less (would still be market value) and then you wouldn't have so much expectations???? Or maybe put in the effort and shut up... they could not score but if they are hitting and playing hard... Toronto fans will love them

So to be clear, you're doubling down suggesting Toronto sports media is harder on athletes than New York?!

Like wow, this is easily a colder take than anything Steve Simmons has ever written.

That's because of money. Abolish the cap and the Leafs would have way more power.

I think Friedman said it best when he said he has a theory.
He is reading too much into it and I guess the medias love it since the fans love it even more.
