IMO most of the Toronto media needs to be fired into the sun. Wanna know why the Leafs have to overpay for players all the damned time? This is why. Who the f*** wants the media constantly digging around looking for stories to blow out of proportion in a desperate attempt to get some kind of "scoop"?
awwww it's so tough playing hockey and making millions.
Play with fire and you're a legend here .

Exactly. Sometimes silencio is the golden way to go. Just say nothing and move on, if a human being is not intelligent or wise enough to speak on that occation.
Marner does not strike me as the sharpest knife in the drawer

After Marner tells the media and reporters "we're grown men", 100% of the followers and reporters just want to say.... and dont say it out loud: "But can't you just be better at ice hockey?"
only a child needs to announce he's a 'grown man'
I have shoes older than Marner :p

Nothing the Raptors or Jays have had to deal with comes even close to the pressure or vitriol the Leafs are under in this market.

Not before the Kawhi trade.

Not with the Jays after that huge playoff loss or when the guys went through some cold streaks.

Sure there is criticism. This is not a dead market in any sport. People care about the Raptors and Jays. But none of these guys have to sit in front of a mic day-after-day and listen to the negative crap day-after-day from the media and fans when things are not going exactly like they want. If Bo goes through a rough 20 game stretch, it may get noticed but it is not like the guy is getting booed every time he goes to the plate. Our team has already been booed and we didn't even play 5 games yet... And this is a team that still has a .600 record, has outplayed the other team in 4/5 of the games they've played, and has been actively screwed by the situation room on 2 occasions already.

We already have had our coach change a very legitimate and rational comment because the media is making it out to be a lot more than it is. We are literally commenting in a thread which is criticizing a nothing comment Marner made 5 days ago to point out that he is not even bothered by criticism from his coach. This crap doesn't happen with the Jays and Raptors.

Maybe our players need to be mentally tougher, but that does not change the fact that our media is not making it any easier for them, nor the fact that the Raptors and Jays do not have to deal with anywhere near the kind of media pressure that Leafs players do.

Part of it is that the Leafs are a very polarizing team in Toronto.

When it comes to the Raptors and Jays, in the regular season at least, people either love them or are lukewarm / indifferent.

There's a large contingent of Leafs haters in the city.

I'm not even talking about the bipolar fanbase that can go from liking the Leafs to disliking the Leafs. There are many who simply dislike the Leafs at all times for various reasons (fans of other teams, fans of other sports).

Only in Toronto I hear people complain and blame media. Media is worse in Europe for soccer. Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angles Lakers. It’s tougher in other sports but never hear excuses about media being tough. In those markets people want to be there and media doesn’t stop them from going.

If you can't handle the media, you shouldn't be a pro athlete.

Indeed he's not. I swear I saw him in an interview years ago, when he couldn't say how many provinces there were in Canada. He sort of guessed and he was off by quite a bit, it was one of the most surprising interview moments I've ever seen. Not that I GAF, the kid sure can play hockey which is all I care about. And once he grows up ;), he might be unstoppable.

If you can't handle the media, you shouldn't be a pro athlete.
This.

If it's bad in the whole league you don't have a choice but to deal with it, if it's just a handful of teams with a problem that the rest of the league doesn't have, they have a disadvantage against their competition. There's no equivalent to being a Hurricane or a Coyote in other leagues.

There's no other sport that's #1 by a massive margin in some cities (Toronto, MTL), a distant #4-5 in other major markets (NYR, LA), and a niche hobby barely competing with college sports in small markets.

Another one is “we are just going to have fun.’ WTF. That is something houseleague coaches tell their kids to do. A grown man making millions per year shouldn’t have the attitude I’m just going out for fun.
That is a recent one but my kids hear that one all da time .. back in 70s I never heard that one .. another great one "boys go through da wall whatever it takes" .. or da old coaches tap on shoulder when it was time to take care of a problem .. stupidest one ever was in practice when coach thought team was playing soft and pylons would go up 2 ft from boards and everyone would skate through team in straight line along boards and object was to knock a teammate out with a shot into glass and boards .. "if you can't handle it in practice you can't do it in a game" .. I thought it was only a minor hockey and junior thing but crap it continued into pro too .. and then finish practice off with a bag skate til guys puked out their guts .. da whole system was really really bad but no one said crap

The thread has a bunch of men whining about someone calling themself a grown man, and we are supposed to take their word that they know how a grown man is supposed to act?

Bingo.

You can see that its been a while since someone got bagskated
Maybe we should resurrect Hap Day and bring back the 1940's-style "prison style" training camps...

Lakers media is not worse than Toronto, neither is Dallas. Toronto hockey media is one of the toughest to play in. The only city that can really say anything is Philly and maybe new york. Those media members are tough to deal with. But the media is not tough in LA at all. Living in LA is not hard at all either lol.
