40% of you are insufferable after a string of losses. "Marner and Dubas have to go! Don Cherry was right! Y'all are too soft and woke!"

Another 40% of you are insufferable after a string of wins. "Suck on that, haters! Marner, Matthews and Tavares are all top 10 players! This team is dominate (sic)"

The final 20% have to develop dangerous drinking habits just to tolerate all the idiocy.

This. I'm on a regime where I don't drink a drop from Monday to Thursday but the idiots aren't making it easy on me.:laugh:

Going to be a miserable 6 months for some waiting for the playoffs to start in hopes that Marner shits the bed and they can celebrate.

Your going to miss a great season by the looks of it.

I'm pretty sure this is nonsense. We're all Leaf fans here and we all want playoff success.

Never hated MM - hate the contract and the way he went about it, and they coddle him. Not happy with his playoff performances either

Yup. I will never forget how shocked I was when I heard about the contract - I was expecting 9 million a year, not 11. I was driving when I heard it on the radio, I'm a little bit surprised I managed not to rear end someone.

Nobody said Marner wouldn’t get his regular season assists.
Sorry but games 8-12 where the 11 million dollar player is playing better doesn’t do it for me.

It might do it for Dubas, but let’s see when it’s job on the line time.

Nobody is surprised that Marner will pile up tons of regular assists, particularly if Matthews, Tavares and Nylander keep sniping goals.

Marner's real test will come playoff time where he is coming off 3 consecutive below average playoff series, that resulted in first round losses, and where he hasn't scored a goal in 18 straight playoff games.

For the Leafs to go deep in the playoffs Marner must match his regular season PPG rate with his playoff one.

Regardless if he’s hot or cold I have zero confidence that he and the core players can elevate their game to beat the likes of Tampa, Boston, Washington when it matters most
That’s the real issue.
Come playoff time everyone quotes regular season record (oh we were 3-1 against so and so) and then can’t figure out why the other team got so good.

Again, who said Marner wouldn’t assist regular season? Still has trouble scoring goals minus the empty net, PP and playoffs.

How about washed up JT? He may be overpaid as well but at least he consistently scores goals on goalies.

When the playoffs roll around and they don’t look like game 12 team, it’s still too much money because the support staff won’t carry you either.

Tbh the Tavares-Marner, Nylander Matthews line has always been successful and the other way around never worked. Personally never understood why the revert too took so long
Agreed. I get the idea of putting one of the most skilled/dynamic, playmaking wingers in the league with the best goal scorer in the league is a match made in heaven but Matthews and Nylander had great chemistry and Tavares and Marner looked great together before and obviously Tavares had his best seasons. This makes it harder for teams to match up against us by breaking Matthews and Marner up.

Tavares deserves to be in the title of this thread as well right now. Has 12 pts in 12 games.

i love the (sic) part

now can you explain what the hell it means and why is it in your post
Typically used when quoting someone and including whatever errors they might have said. Many people here will say someone or something has been "dominate" when they actually mean "dominant"

Yeah, that. Thank you.

i still don’t get why that’s on Marner. This is still a depth issue. The problem is the team as a WHOLE could not score. That’s a team problem. It doesn’t only fall on Marners shoulders. With Tampa, in the finals when Point stopped scoring it was Blake Coleman, Palat, Gourde who stepped up. That is and has been Toronto’s problem. We have zero depth scoring now.

Good for Mitch, but he deserved all the criticism he got when he played like shit. But I am very very very happy with his last 5-6 games now, not just on the stat sheet but the compete/effort/hustle whatever you wanna call it on the ice. He's engaged, he's moving his feet, making plays, back checking and making shit happen. Keep it f***ing rolling now.

Marner has been the most important player on every team he has ever played for since he was 5 years old. He is the engine that drives the leafs offence. As he gets a little stronger, he will dominate even more. True hockey fans know what a special player he is.

Marner wasnt up to his elite self to start but actually wasnt playing that bad, just a lot of this happening to the Leafs the first few games:

Marner should probably be around 15-20 point on the season already.

Don't know if anyone knows this...but at 11 million we should be expecting this production, no celebrating that it's happening..... it should be expected, just like it's expected with McDavid or Draisaitl, who combined make less than Marner, Tavares.. Anything less than this and he should be making about 8.5 or less.
And you said he would never live up to his contract. So what's up with that? By your very statement you were wrong and you were wrong in a very obnoxious way.

no one is hoping Marner shits the bed in the playoffs. Season success is nothing it’s all about can he do it in the playoffs.

Just because posters are waiting for the playoffs to judge this team doesn’t make them haters or are cheering for the team to fail.

Marner has definitely upped his game but no surprise he started piling up the points once Matty and JT started to light the lamp. What a shot by Matty on that PP goal last night and great pass from Rielly.
Think you got that reversed. Try watching the games.

"Hate" is a strong word. Just as Nylander before, if he doesn't play a committed, hard-nosed game, he can set up as many fancy goals as he'd like it won't translate into playoff success.

I've tried to be objective and fair in my assessment, leaning on the 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" mantra most of the time. I'm glad when Keefe calls them out though. His job is to be more honest and direct.

This team was last year and will this year be measured on post-season success. It would be great to see players hit 50 goals or 150 points, it won't register with fans unless the team is closer to a Cup and eventually raises one. My interest in this team is far more pedestrian than in years past due to this lack of playoff performance and sacrifice.

Marner doesn't need to throw checks every shift or be in every scrum, but he has to have fight for the puck. It's what Nylander has visibly improved upon over the last couple of years. He's much more willing to go into corners and he's more difficult to push off of the puck. The confidence he exudes illustrates that HE knows he's a "tougher" player.

When you earn the big salary the critics will rightfully question your worth relative to Cap space. That's the deal in professional sports. Hell, in Toronto I hear critics of players making minimum wage, even if they are playing a solid role on the team and doing their job as expected. The very minimum expectation is commitment and sacrifice.

Taking a small sample, or even a full season without playoff success; is not a wise barometer on how any player or team will be measured.
When did keefe call Marner out? Quite the opposite. He has defended Marner quite a lot and has said he didnt deserve anywhere near the criticism.
Your writing reads like a piece of fiction.

...So your point is?
...Your call of action?
...Why should anyone give a shit?

Why is there only a Marner thread?
Shouldn’t Matthews and Tavares have one as well, there’s a decent amount to discuss about them

I don't write fiction. My word is my bond.

He called out Marner and Matthews when he was asked about Ritchie:

Keefe downplays Ritchie criticism: Matthews, Marner as much to blame
Keefe downplays Ritchie criticism: Matthews, Marner as much to blame

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe didn't want to scapegoat Nick Ritchie after benching him during a 5-3 defeat to the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

After the loss, Keefe faced numerous questions about not playing Ritchie for a prolonged stretch, but the bench boss emphasized his top forward unit of Ritchie, Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner struggled as a whole.

"It was more to me about the fact that that line wasn't going today," Keefe said, according to The Athletic's Jonas Siegel. "You should be asking as many questions about Matthews and Marner today as you should be (Ritchie)."

Nobody doubts that Marner will go out and get his 90+ points like clockwork. But many people doubt that he and the other two 11 million dollar boys will show up when it counts.
Matthews & Marner both produced fine in the playoffs under Babcock. It’s not their fault they have a coach who doesn’t line match or switch lines when something isn’t working. In the 2 Boston series Chara/Bergeron matchups were able to shut down one of 34 or 16 but the other one went off

I'm not a Marner hater. More a realist. Most of you have to look up the word realist, I understand that. In a salary cap world I'm not sure Marner is an asset. He does a lot of things well. But with all that money he makes he can go scoreless for a long time. Making all that cash and scoring the puck being the weakest part of a overall very strong game is hard to justify. I root for him. When/if any of the core four go I hope it's him.

The point he as making, which clearly went over your head, is he thinks Marner is a regular season hero and a playoff zero.. 82 games in a season... game 83 is the first game of the playoffs?
Yea i got it after, and as you said it just went completely over my head at the time especially since it was posted right after the win.

Apologists point out to the Leaf's hot streak and his numbers right now, but the skeptics among us will say we've seen it all before.

But last night Marner showed that he still hasn't learned, and neither has this team. Up 4-1, win looking pretty solid, Mitch finds himself leading a 3-on-2. Instead of making a safe play - a shot, a "safe" pass behind defenders - he finds Sandin inexplicably joining the rush and decides to pass to him. Rasmus, instead of immediately shooting or passing off and dropping back, holds on and waits for a better angle. The shot is blocked and the Bruins race back up the ice.

Bruins start pressing the action and what looked like a pretty easy win overall almost became a nail-biter.

This is what this team has done over and over, year after year. It's the same lesson they seem incapable of learning or, maybe Keefe just isn't pointing it out to them at all? In any case, until they change that mindset, from "lets shut this game down and take the win versus padding our stats by playing pond hockey" they are not going to ever sniff a Cup final.

So yay, the big 3 had a big night, great for them. There's never been any doubt they are regular season studs. But wake me up when they give me any reason to believe they are any different/better from the other failed teams that past 5 years.
