Molson can sponsor, losing Marner for 4 mid to later 1st rounders would be very bad for the leafs. i hope habs do it unless they get atop UFA .

As long as the assets coming back are the right value and the cap space is allocated properly towards a great young player, the Leafs have as much flexibility, if not more than Marner himself.

If Marner wants to be a Leaf but wants to squeeze the Leafs beyond what is possible, he may have to enjoy being a Hurricane/Islander/whatever.

He'll probably realize he's not going to be on iPhone commercials and Red Bull cans when he's starring in Raleigh with the Bunch of Jerks.

Meanwhile, 4x first round picks and cash to throw at Aho, Rantanen, Panarin, Werenski, McAvoy, Provorov, Karlsson, Point, Barzal next year, Pettersson the year after.

If you're paying a winger $11M+ good luck putting a competitive team out there. If a team makes that kind of offer on Marner I take the 4 firsts in a heartbeat, sign Panarin and then hope overpaying him by $2-3M leads to a few lottery picks.

Do you guys think it will be easy to sign Panarin to a nice team friendly contract in UFA? ... 4 mid to late 1st round picks for marner, I will take an easy pass ...

I’m really glad we have a smart GM steering the ship. The only think harder than navigating a tight cap situation is getting an opportunity to sign such elite young players. People seem more than ready to throw that all away to gamble on UFAs, offersheets and draft picks again

OH YA... these are Nylanders (above) and Marners (below) stats for the past two years before Tavares showed up.

If Nylander was in training camp and played with Tavares all season and had PP1 time, coming off his 60 point season, he could have easily put up 80+ points too.

Clearly watching him play in the WHC you can see he didn't forget how to play hockey.

In my opinion, it will end with a contract of approximately 10.5 for Marner
8 years and 84 M. The leafs will not want to give him + that Tavares and Matthews but will have to pay him at great price anyway

I agree with the cap hit you are quoting but not the term. Given that nylander and matthews got 6 and 5 year term there is no reason why marner will accept 8 year term

This is what happens on every board. Posters fall in love with their favourite player and defend that player to the death.

I’ve noticed some big Nylander fans changing the goal posts and when you do that you get called out by other posters.

Example
When Nylander was sitting out and all the pundits were stating that he was asking for 8.5 per year his fans were fighting with everyone that there was no proof, pundits are just giving their opinion. Etc. They were doing this to defend willy when everyone was pissed off and saying trade him.

Fast forward to marner.

A pundit says I believe not I’m hearing but I believe which to me says it’s his own personal opinion.not fact only an opinion that marner will go to other teams for offersheets. Now the willy defenders are saying dreger is telling the truth and if marner is contemplating an offer sheet we should trade Mariners ass out of town.

So in conclusion willy fans fight tooth and nail to protect their guy from pundits and their bull crap but believe the same pundits when it comes to marner.

yup.

and when nylnader absolutely sucked ass in the regular season and playoffs it was the f***ing zone entries and other BS; like those win games F that bull crap

Marner is great. He is amazing. I love the guy.

But he scored 22 goals last year and 26 this year. I'm sorry but that is not worth anything more than 9.16M (cause of his jersey number).

I personally would be surprised if the Leafs even offered more than 8.5M AAV.

Now, since I am a fair person and I want the guy around long term.....please see my contract offer attached.

I think this is closer to the truth. I think it will be between 9.16 to 10.16 for a 5 year term for Marner; people may not like it but Dubas the dumbass has already set the presendence with nylnader and matthews contracts

on top of that marner is a beast on even strength, pp and pk - this value much superior to matthews and is definitely far far far more superior than nylander

It’s pretty selfish that Marner stated that he intended to wait it out and review offer sheet options. Like do you really want someone who’s eyes are always on the door?

This is maybe just my business mind but anyone and I mean literally anyone can be replaced. You want to negotiate dirty like that ? Okay thank you for your service. By that I mean players have sat out but never openly stated they’re open to an offer sheet. I get he’s great but I’d start drawing the line somewhere and start showing players they’re a team and sometimes that means taking 10.5 when you could get 11.5 somewhere else if you want to stay. Kind of like Yzerman did with Stamkos. This team has a great city and lots to offer. You don’t like it? I’m sorry but get out.

If I were Dubas I’d make the deadline the draft and after that start exploring trade options

At the end of the day, good teams can’t afford a stupid offer sheet. Bad teams will give us at least one lottery pick and 3 others which may also be lottery picks. You start to see what’s more important to a player. Maxing our every dollar possible or winning. I doubt Dubas is low balling here

when did marner say this?

Nylander can't even hold Marner's jock strap; i am amazed how people keep bringing up nylander and marner in the same sentence; Marner >>>> Nylander

I don't know if you are overvaluing Marners performance this year, or undervaluing Nylanders performance this year. Whatever it is, it reeks of recency bias.

Sure. But he didn’t show up for camp and he didn’t show up for the regular season he did play. He should have been lights out proving his stand-off was worth it. He didn’t.

Nextyear could be different. He could be the greatest hockey player on the planet who knows. I just hope he actually shows up and grows a pair. He needs to stop playing scared.

It was both parties at fault.

A better way to put it is that if he wants to stay he needs to settle for much less on a short term deal. He can want whatever number in the world, what matters is what he settles for.

If they are asking 10M on a 3 year term, do you think they are going to settle for the 7.5Mish that is reasonable on that term?

They could consider 9x3 as settling, but that's still not a good deal for us.

From a player's perspective. I don't see any reason for Marner to sign for less than he's worth. He just put up a 94 point season and will be getting better. Why would he settle for less and not aim for a nice contract?

IMO star players and agents are finally smartening up (I.e with Eichel, Matthews contracts). Long-term contracts are always signed for what a player is worth currently and that has confused me. In 1-3 years, the contract is considered a steal and the star player is getting paid less than he 's worth.
