1B. Tavares will only continue to get passed by MM and AM. Rielly will also firmly pass him next year provided we acquire a good rhd for him to play with. As good as tavares is, MM is better and AM is even better than him. The youth on this team will be our best players(hopefully willy can join that level of play starting next year)

Dubas needs to shut his pie hole. What a stupid thing to say. Why is he insinuating that Marners camp is talking with the media. It serves no purpose other then to piss off Marners camp. Can he learn to stop giving stupid sound bites.

I literally despise negotiating in public, in any form but somebody is feeding Dreger information about Marner's camps strategies right now so saying Dubas should shut his face (which I absolutely agree with) for talking in the media whilst Dreger's being feed information seems slightly hypocritical, why was Marner's camp trying to piss the Leafs off exactly?

This works both ways

I think you could turn Tavares/Marner into a pretty good debate right now, if you wanted to, but Marner was the better of the two this past season, in my opinion, and I can see the gap widening as he develops further.

You think a guy like Marner is ready for the public onslaught related to him looking at an offersheet? I'm not.

The most uncomfortable I've ever seen Marner was him trying to dodge questions from the press in the locker room after his agent gave that stupid radio interview a few months ago

I think he's looking to get what he's earned and paid a fair wage similar to the peers on his team.

I think Dubas would know if the Marner camp was chatty and he is maybe letting the marner camp know he is not amused.

Marner is the best player on our team we should not screw with his contract too much

That doesn't really matter. Ehlers and his agent well know the cap was going to go up.

Pastrnak is a horrible comparible, and people should stop with it. In Pastrnak's U21 season, he scored 34G and 70P in 75GP. A pace we'll be lucky if Nylander comes close to.

Curious to know what you think: guaranteed Pasternak would like a mulligan on his contract. With the numbers he’s putting up now, how much do you think he would be asking for now????

Letting folks know they're just getting one side of the story...

Marner is vulnerable to bad PR - Dubas positioning himself well here against any future leaks by the agent. Smart move.
He needs to stop it is Never ending. We can and we will, we will not set the Market ( they have clearly did) we need to sign Marner before July 1st and many others not required sound bites.

No side of the story has come out. No one said what Marner is asking for or what the leafs have offer. A insider stated the obvious is all that happened. Marner will talk to others if he is not signed by June 26th. That was not insider information it was a fact.

Nylander got 200-300K more than he should have,.

In here ...... well, it was more like $400 - 500 k more, and for a 7 or 8 year term versus the 6 year term his contract was for.

But never mind, I can see where this is going (revisionist history). Not worth it.

Using Dreger as a puppet?

All of Paul Marner's comments the past year. Ferris' comments right after Matthews signed his contract. Do you need more?
What did dredger say that was part of the negotiations that was insider information. Nothing is the ckear answer. Paul and his agent have not said a thing to anyone since Jan when Mathews was signed to a bad deal.

I don’t blame Dubas for pointing out that Dreger has been acting like a Marner cheerleader. :)

Sounds to me like he's shook

You would never hear Lou taking like that.

Maybe the young GM shouldn't have promised he would get the Marner deal done. Now he's worried he's going to look did again if it's June 30th and he doesn't have marner signed.

Are you suggesting there's a chance that the Leafs might've told the media that Marner is willing to listen to other teams in July??

Seems quite obvious IMO.

You could be right.

I thought saying they needed it done early was a bad move. Hopefully this juggling doesn’t force them to punt on Marner. Unless of course it’s for Seth Jones, in which case I’ll snap the ball.

Maple Leafs' Dubas dreaming of Raptors-like run with current core intact - Sportsnet.ca
In the eyes of the general manager it includes Mitch Marner, the unsigned 22-year-old winger whose ongoing contract talks have become a plentiful source of speculation. While some muse about the possibility of Marner signing a July 1 offer sheet to play somewhere other than his hometown, Dubas envisions him as a lifetime Leaf.

“I’ve told him and I’ve told [agent] Darren [Ferris],” Dubas said Thursday in Buffalo, during a media scrum at the NHL draft combine. “[Mitch], Auston [Matthews], Morgan [Rielly], they’re the types of guys that should play their whole career here. William [Nylander] would be in that same bucket, right?"

“I think that’s what the dream is when you’re with a franchise, you want the players to play their whole careers, especially when they’re core parts of it, and then the rest is history.”

In other words, those are the cards Dubas is comfortable going all-in with. He’d take a hand that includes Matthews, Marner, Rielly and Nylander — not to mention John Tavares, already under contract for another six seasons — and try his luck in the NHL’s highest-stakes poker game until either the Leafs won the Cup or they found someone else to do his job.
“I’m very hopeful,” Dubas told reporters. “I’m a very optimistic person, so I’m hopeful that we are and we’ll keep working towards that. I think that’s what’s been expressed on everybody’s end, so I think if everyone is in on it that way we should be able to get there.”

The challenge is finding a contract that provides fair market value, satisfies Marner’s wishes after a 94-point season and leaves the organization with the ability to build around the stars. The Leafs likely aren’t in a position to pay him at the same rate as their top two centres — Matthews earns $11.634 million, Tavares $11 million — but must find a compromise.

(One industry source not connected to the talks believes a $60-million, six-year deal is the sweet spot since it would make Marner the NHL’s second-highest-paid winger behind Patrick Kane and still leave him in position to cash in again well before age 30).

Yep, he's pretty rattled.

Taking a retaliatory shot at a media member like Dreger over a simple "speculation ;)" tweet?

It's almost cinematic how bad Dubas is at negotiating.
