How come Marner was an utter failure in the playoffs a few months ago? I mean yea good on him for blocking a couple shots but we're not paying $12m for a utility dman that can block a couple shots.

I wonder if you were singing the same tune after the 2017-2018 playoffs where marner scored 9 pts in 7 games and basically led the leafs into the playoffs by getting kadri/marleau going

i wonder if tavares' spirit was with marner when he was scoring during that season

if it is 5 years I'd be ticked off; Dubas would have shown his amateur hour again
Marner has an ego that's not easy to deal with. Add his dad and things are tough for Dubas.

Maybe they split the difference...

Between $10.5M and $11M for 6 years. Marner get a heck of a payday and the Leafs get 2 years beyond 4.

Can't WAIT to see if Marner signs for higher than 6.6x6.

You've gone officially on the record saying that Matt Cane is a reliable source for his Nylander predictions, so I'm holding you accountable to that with Marner.

6.6x6, or Dubas sucks at his job. Clark34's official stance.

I think it’ll be a little lower AAV around 9.5 over 3 with last year salary at 11.5.
NHL life would be so much easier with a luxury tax - a Win for the players / a Win for the teams / a Win for the League.

Set it up where every dollar you spend over the cap, you need to pay the League $5, and the other teams split up the pie.

I can't imagine him signing for less than an average of $10.5M.

Maybe I'll be surprised.
It's not my argument.

It's Clark34's.

He says that Matt Cane was a "reliable source" when he predicted Nylander's contract. Well, Matt Cane also predicted Marner signing at 6.6x6.

So Clark34's "reliable source" thinks anything over 6.6x6 for Marner is overpayment. And Clark34 supports that.

That is HIS argument. And Dubas is horrible at his job if Marner makes more than 6.6x6

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to imply you were wrong. I was offering a guess. :)

Well if they did would the Leafs actually report all their HRR increasing the cap or would they pay the $5 tax?

Don't know why you would spread a baseless rumour that Marner is an egotistical jerk...couldn't be further from the truth.

He's a great 'kid', with great parents.
Make up rumours about Habs or Bruins players, not our boys. Yeesh.

I think Marner is a good kid and a great hockey player, but he definitely has parents who want to be part of his spotlight and who definitely think where he slots next to his teammates is a very personal statement about his worth. That’s tough to navigate.

There's that old hockey story...

Mario Lemieux was leaving the ice while jousting with another player. Mario said, in the hope of putting the other player in his place : "How much do you make?"

The other player replied, "The same as you... less than Wayne".

**

Whether it's true or not, it shows how much of every negotiation is ego driven.

There’s a rumour going around that Max Domi and his dad are super nice guys and great teammates. Also, Brad Marchand is very upset about last year’s SCF loss and is coming back this season on a mission. Both players are hell bent on helping their teams win this season.

It’s all gamesmanship at this point, nothing to get truly excited about. I just hope the kid’s agent understands that Marner’s “brand” is damaged if he sits out during camp. Marner was tops on the team for endorsements last year, he’s beloved and can expect additional revenue to pour in for years if he signs. Missing games, after the Dubas Nylander farce, people will turn quickly and just like Willie, lasting damage.

Do you think marner's gang would let him sign before Matthews?

If they're basing his demand on Matthews' get how could that work?

That’s not true and fabrications from Bobby mac.

It was reported that last season Marner camp was ready to do a 9 AAV deal for 8 years. After negotiations it could well have been 8 to 8.5 for 8 years more than pastrnak and deal could have been done. Heck even 9 AAV would have been fine.

Sure fans would have whines about 9 AAV (or 8 to 8.5 AAV); but the deal would have been for 8 years and about right now it would have looked pretty solid.

Now to make executive decisions like that one needs good foresight and Dubas has shown he doesn’t have it

Matthews cap percentage at time of signing: 14.6.
Matthews' cap percentage has never been 14.6%.

You can pick one or the other.
Or you can be more accurate and go by the cap and conditions they signed under.

But what Dekes is doing has never been done spanning the history of everything.
This is untrue.

He’s using Matthews cap percentage at time of projected cap hit.
I'm using the cap number that Matthews was signed under.

No? It was reported like 8 months after the fact that “would have” worked.

If that was real we would have known about it

I don't think the Matthews thing really came into effect until this season actually played itself out with Marner having a better year than him.

Over their rookie and sophomore years Matthews bested him and Marner wouldn't have had a leg to stand. This past year changed everything though.

Marner could have easily had a contract done in the off-season, but Dubas already had his hands full with Nylander and probably thought the effects of a new Marner deal would have spilled over into those negotiations.

What changed?

Matthews still scored at an 88 pt pace and Marner. Had what 8 empty net points?

Nothing changed. He PKs? You think people make money for that?
