No I do not agree term is a huge part of a contract's value. It's a part, but not a huge part. Almost every guy with high end talent coming off ELC didn't sign for 8 years, was never an issue before.

Marner's value to me is max of 10.5 x 7 (Maybe 10.5 x 6). For 3 years he would have to be lower than that. Pretty simple.

How much lower ? I have no idea and neither does anyone else because there is absolutely no evidence to show how much the term effects the AAV of a contract.

Literally all that above has absolutely nothing to do with what I posted btw.

As for Matthews contract: Not highest in actual dollars, not highest AAV. Can't arguably say anything. Simply isn't the highest. It's 3rd for AAV, likely not even top 10 for actual dollars.

Matthews aav is 3rd highest, ONE ufa year. McDavid’s is higher with FOUR ufa years.

Term and number of ufa years are HUGE parts of the equation.

Good god... the lengths people go to try and rationalize the Matthews contract.

You agree that Marners aav should be lower at 3 years than at 7... so why can’t we do this in reverse? Matthews aav would be substantially higher if 8 years.

Dreger really likes being the mouthpiece for these guys, doesn't he. I just think it ruins his objectivity and thus credibility.
What would be the objective, credible way to post that message?

I'm okay if he goes overseas to workout.

I'd be okay if he signed contract and played the year there ... Leafs would know where they are with the Cap and make adjustments.

What hurts the Leafs more than marner not signing is not knowing.

Imagine turning down an upper echelon NHL deal to go play in Zurich for I think 450k was the max?
That ~9-10 million you lose this season, over the course of even a 6 year deal, you probably never make it back over the course of the contract. If you do, it's ever so narrowly.
So good luck with that.

If it's just to train, it's weird, but whatever.

Werenski just took 5M to secure a 3 year bridge deal.

If Marner wants a 3 year deal his ask needs to come down to 7.5M
That's a steal. But it essentially walks him to UFA. Weird contract since cap space isn't an issue there at all.

Nah, 450k is certainly not the max... there are players that get very close to 1 mio net. I still don't think/hope he comes over though.

Notice how you use no evidence or math to back up your take.

"Huge parts of the equation" When no equation is being used. "Matthews AAV would have been substantially higher if 8 years" Nothing to back that up (not even a fake number many on here love to use).

I'm not going to any lengths to rationalize his contract. Simply stated the fact it's not the highest and you turn this into some kind of Dubas hating rant.

I swear, people on here can have most of their conversations by themselves. You put words in my mouth in your post then argue them. Why do you even need a forum to have this conversation.

Is this true? That teams lost so many RFA's lately I'd be surprised if they'd be good with the chance of losing another. I thought Werenski and Marner were taken in the same draft
