Digging deeper defensively (and rank out of the 99 players with 60+ 5v5 minutes):

Shots against/60: 5th fewest out of 99
High danger chances against/60: Fewest out of 99
xGA/60: Fewest out of 99

Anyone feel like a guy who is not only leading the playoffs in points but is also one of the best defensive players is not getting enough love?

Feels like I keep hearing how he "needs to do more" from the talking heads.

I mentioned it on the GDT and the post game thread.

MM is not the usual jumpy and buzzing self but it probably had more to do with opposing team playing great D on him and his other line mates than him not doing anything. He is great at PK and also starting to play a more no-non sense direct style while hunting for opposing mistakes. Which in itself is a huge transition from over thinking and over doing like playoffs past.

The important thing is that Leafs is winning Games and MM plays a huge factor in that. Those PK are momentum boaster for the Leafs.

Yo @Antropovsky check out post #2174, then go hang your head in shame and I suggest you consider not posting for a while.
Excellent I'm glad he got a stick ok it. Doesn't make it a line driving play. All the talk about him being a line driver and my opinion is that he hasn't been a line driver. Check out 2164..do you disagree with that post? Why do you keep commenting on my opinion but not others?

What is your opinion anyways? Has he been a play driver? Has he looked like a top 5 oaid player? Best player on the leaf? Why don't you point out specific offensive plays to support your claim like I have on multiple plays?

You know me, I don't put a ton of faith in advanced stats but that doesn't mean I think their meaningless and damn, that's impressive!

It also adds to the mountain of evidence that people really need to exercise caution when listening to the talking heads. They're not always wrong but some of them are a lot more knowledgeable than others, and they're generally much better at talking than thinking.

I did see a segment during the broadcast talking about how incredible Matthews has been defensively. I guess it's a good thing Marner is covering D for the other 4 guys on the ice? Everyone has said he's been good defensively.

Man that’s impressive, anyone slagging this guy should watch another sport or mix up the meds. Producing points, giving up none and the lead dog on the PK.

I really appreciate you posting his advanced stats, but who has ever said he was a bad defensive player? I've only said that he is vastly overrated on offense (particularly in the playoffs) and that his linemates are doing the heavy lifting on the goals he's factoring in. To which I've been told I'm wrong.

You clearly have a lot of knowledge about analytics, and have posted his defensive stats but neglected to post his offensive advanced stats. Instead you merely pointed to his points. Could you post his advanced offensive stats relative to Tavares, Orielly, Nylander and Matthews?

Also curious who's getting the matchup vs Tampa's big line? Kucherov, Point and Stamkos all on one line... Thats a heck of a line to play defense against and the drop off in offense is substantial to Tampas 2nd line. Is it Marner and Matthews getting that defensive task?

Here is where Marner ranks among Leafs forwards for on ice impact at ES:

Shots for: 1st for totals, 4th/60
Scoring Chances for: 2nd for totals, 3rd/60
High Danger Chances for: tied for 3rd for totals, 9th/60
xGoals for: 1st for totals, 5th/60
Goals: 1st for totals, 2nd/60

High Danger rate would be the thing to look at to support your argument here.

Getting to the lines, Keefe appears to be less worried about forward ES matchups against the Point line and more about making sure McCabe and/or Brodie is out there against them,

As far as forwards go there are 6 forwards between around 17-19 minutes against Point so far and Marner is one of them.

Marner's numbers against Point at even strength so far:

TOI: 17:13
Corsi: 64.86% (24-13 Marner)
Shots: 60.00% (12-8 Marner)
Scoring Chances: 68.75% (11-5 Marner)
High Danger Chances: 100.00% (5-0 Marner)
xGF%: 68.92% (Highest xGF% of any forward against Point)
GF%: 100.00% (2-0 Marner)

Certainly not an 11 million dollar role. Not even close.

Lol... You posted in the gdt that Marner had to wake up? You didn't get my like?
Marner played great all game. He was being double teamed all night long. He was then played with different line mates and got himself away from their top d pairing and shut down line and looked better in the 3rd, not that he was playing better but got better match ups. Keefe deserves credit for making these changes.

Marner deserves every penny of his salary as he is a generational player.

How any leaf fan can say anything negative about his play in the playoffs is simply not a leaf fan.

He has points, yes. Lot of 2nd assists and only 2 goals. He is playing pretty timid and doing a lot silly hot dog passes. I'd like to see a more determined Marner that plays a little more conservative.

- 2nd in the playoffs in primary points, 1st in primary ppg.
- 2 goals in 4 games...that's a 41 goal pace...from our playmaker
- Tampa's powerplay has been significantly neutered

idk what you're expecting from Marner

Such a steaming bs post from you man, he hasn’t made any hot dog passes since the first game, he’s been very controlled and hasn’t given up the puck at ALL. It‘s even more remarkable when you consider his ice time, for instance he played double the ice time of Willie last game. And as pointed out he‘s getting primary points, not to mention leading 5v5. Factor in his defensive play and I’m left to conclude you’re just a never ending belly aching poster. Be better.

He should delete his account as he is only posting to cause bs.
I'm beginning to enjoy his posts, they're comedy gold. Check out this post from yesterday - he said Marner has poor skating technique. Yes, he actually said that, I don't think I've ever been more surprised by post in this place. I just kept starting at it thinking did someone really just say that?
