Pretty hard to put that loss on Marner, if you’re being honest.
Like the rest of them, he could be better though

I just don’t think Marner can handle the pressure here. If the Leafs lose this series he needs to be traded because he carries the weight of the playoff series losing streak, his past failures and his contract. The stakes have gotten too high for him here and he holds more value to another team with less pressure.

He looked tight and snake bitten. Bad game and still managed to generated a few chances. He didn't help Matthews at all though for long stretches.

I expect a huge bounce back game, but it might not be on the score sheet.

Marner got 3 points last night.
Who cares? I wasn't paying attention by the time the 3rd goal was scored but by then the game was over. And the 1st two were run of the mill passes on the PP, nothing special there. That may have been the least impressive 3 point game Marner will ever play.

Matthews and Marner were uncharacteristically sloppy and falling a bit much.
They were both very disappointing, weren't they? I know some people get really angry when I bring it up but FML, who give a crap about all the regular season stuff when you can't bring it in the playoffs? 60 goals, 99 points, all-star team, consecutive game point streaks, record breaking Novembers etc. Every time I see someone bragging about how good these guys are I'm just shaking my head. Playoffs matter so much more than the regular season and if you can't play your best hockey when it matters most, what good are you?

I thought this team had a legit shot at winning the cup. Pretty hard to say that after that game though, boy did that ever suck!

He looked like he was about to cry on the bench. He looked like a scared little boy out there. Matthews doesn’t look like he gives a shit.

That was the impression I got as well. 3 points is fine and all but you start seeing those behind the back drop passes in the 3rd period to nowhere... What is left to think?

In the title. We need to be able to have a more objektive discussion about every player. If this is the only Marner thread then that is impossible.

My only shot at him is that he need to shoot waaaay more. And Matthews waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more.

He is just an entitled and spoiled brat who thinks we should all bow at his feet because he does good in the regular season. Very hard to like him.

I don’t get that vibe from him at all. It’s more so a lot of fans projecting their feelings on him tbh. It’s not his fault we’re not good enough to be out there lmao. They feel like he’s spoiled because he got paid. But that doesn’t mean he’s spoiled. He’s worked hard to get where he’s at.

He and Matthews got to step it up though I will admit.

I don’t think you can put that game on Marner solely. He wasn’t great but he was far from our worst player last night. We need more from Tavares and Matthews tbh. Matthews is the goal scorer and every playoffs he just stops shooting. Tavares is the captain and should be leading.

As I’ve said lots of times move Marner and Matthews away from each other. IMO when they are together I feel like Marner stops focussing on ways to impact the game and more on trying to get Matthews going.

Separating them is the way to go.

I felt they played a weak game myself , or at least not dominant , but at the end of the night they were involved in 2 pp goals , 1 even strength and zero goals against while the tavares line had a bad line change with both Tavares and Oreilly chasing the same puck and didn't get it costing a goal and later on for another even strength goal .

Dont know if he is spoiled. Imature and has not the greatest social skills. A realy punchable face. But that is not his fault.

I think Matthews is his biggest problem right now. He need to shoot more because sure as hll Matthews aint. I think Marner got the best shooting% this season.

I'm not putting the loss on Marner at all, just saying that saying he got 3 points sounds like he had a great game, but it's misleading. Marner didn't have a great game last night, but he wasn't terrible either. I'd even say that he was one of our best players last night, but the team played so poorly that that's not really saying much. Like you said in the post above, he and Matthews both have to step it up and you can say the same for the rest of them as well.

This. I don't think Marner's spoiled at all and ever since we lost to MTL 2 years ago, he's been playing great. He was also pretty darn good against TB in the last playoffs, hopefully he will be again. Last night wasn't a great game for him but still, 3 points is 3 points and he was far from terrible.

Fair, I also think spreading out the offense is the way we can beat teams. Especially now with Cernak and Hedman out. We have to force Cooper to make hard decisions.

I wanna see a Matthews, JT, O’Reilly down the middle.

I hope we see Knies - O’Reilly - Nylander back together

The pressure he has on him is nothing we normals ever will experience. But on the other hand so is his salary. He probably think One mill in less pressure would be worth it in these situations. I dont think he love it. Some players do, i dont think he is one of them. But he is part of the solution, not the problem going forward.

Shot totals a game should be matthews nylander tavares marner. In that order. This game it was 4 Nylander 4 Tavares... 3 Marner 3 keerfoot 3 kampf... 2Matthews 2 Lafferty. If we had at least 5 shots from Matthews would have been nice.

That’s where I can agree, I think he’s a player who struggles with immense pressure. I also think he feels like it’s on him to be the hometown hero. You’re absolutely right, I think if he could do it again he probably takes 9 million, 1 million extra per year was not worth all the hate he ended up getting. I don’t really blame those guys too much though, I think they had some power hungry agents/parents who gave them bad advice. People forget they were like 21 when they signed their extensions. What do you really know about money, privilege, optics at that age?

Its why I think they will not chase money in their next contract negotiations. I believe they want to win and they know they’ll have to sacrifice a little this time if they want to win in Toronto at least.
