Bc Strome was projected as 1C. Do remember that at the time of the draft, we didn’t have AM. Only Willie was in the system as C.

Also, I don’t think they ever thought Arizona won’t draft Strome thus it was always MM or Hannifin or Werenski.
To my knowledge Strome was never part of the conversation for the Leafs.
I could be wrong but I don't recall ever seeing Strome ranked higher than Marner.

I don’t think they ever viewed Strome as an option bc they knew he won’t be available. Kind of like Oilers with Poolparty, they never thought he would be available and once he is, they ended up taking him.
Could be I suppose. From what I remember though, they would have taken Marner over Strome anyway.

Not part of the conversation - that's the way I remember it as well. I do believe that Strome was ranked third on most lists though.

This is who was actually drafted in those positions.

#4 Mitch Marner

For

#8 Zach Werenski
#34 Travis Dermott
#38 Paul Bittner
#58 Kevin Stenlund

Sebastian Aho (the good one) was drafted one spot after Dermott. I’m thinking if we made that trade would have went with Werenski & Aho instead of Dermott.

Although in an ideal world we come out of that draft with Marner & Aho. 2/3rds of a top line.

There was also the 24th pick that we wouldn’t need to trade down anymore with the additional 2nds. With #8, 24, 34, 38 we could have walked out with a franchise-defining draft. Just based off who we were rumoured to be interested in at the time, that’s maybe a Konecny-Aho-Rantanen line with another high 2nd left for a Carlo/Cernak/Hintz.

I believe Strome was never part of the conversation bc they never thought he would be available. Hannifin and Strome were 3rd and 4th on the central scouting ranking according to the NHL 2015 draft wiki page. Didn’t notice this till now, MM was ranked 6th among North American skaters and Crouse was 5th.

Good thing Hunter didn’t pay attention to any lists.
I think Mackenzie had Marner highly ranked.

I think if Strome dropped to us. The BJ trade will go through. Or a trade with Bruins for two or all three of their 1st rounders.

Just glad it ends up the way it did or else we will
be saying, we should have drafted MM….
2014, Nylander was a great pick, lucky to have a player that good available in the 8th slot and good job to make the right choice. 2015, Marner was a homerun pick, lucky to have a player that good available at #4 and good job that we made again the right pick. 2016 we were lucky again as Matthews was no question, well above average quality for a #1 overall pick. Then 2017, we're lucky once again that Liljegren got mono and therefore dropped in the draft, good job for making the right choice once again, pretty sure he goes several slots higher in a redraft.

Four years of making successfully drafting BPA with very high picks, all of them are excellent players and here we sit, almost 9 years after drafting Nylander and we still haven't won a single playoff round. Unbelievable.

We're cursed I tell ya, there is no other possible explanation.

My memory could be faulty I suppose, but I recall talk that the leafs were ready to trade down from the 4th pick if Marner was already gone.

The difference between a #3 and #4 player and the leafs didn't think they would have a chance? Dude...do you believe that is the way it works in the draft?

I think it was a well kept secret, I couldn’t imagine other teams knowing we wanted Marner.

Marner's true test and real appreciation will come based on his inpact in the playoffs.

Matthews scored 60 goals won the Hart. Rocket and Lyndsay in the regular season and what good did it do the Leafs team come playoff time?.

The Conn Smythe is the trophy that every player covets as playoff MVP because that is when appreciation for their impact on winning championships is measured most in appreciation from the fan base.

When I was still young in the 1960s and my favourite player Davey Keon won the Conn Smythe while helping my Leafs win the Stanley Cup is when my admiration and appreciation for my team and fav player were at its highest.

I don't remember TBH, not pretending. I do remember that Marner was less than impressive in the playoffs and we lost to MTL which IMO was the low point for this core (Marner included) so I get people being pissed. I remember posting that we should consider major changes and I'd be interested in knowing what we could get for Marner in a trade but I also said I wouldn't move unless the return was massive and I honestly don't remember people saying "get rid of him".

As for late 2022, I don't know about smear campaign. There were some people freaking out about the slow start of not just Marner, but pretty much everyone except for JT but it was just noise so I think I mostly ignored it. Not gonna lie, I remember being quite worried myself at some point as the team was just awful but I never thought we'd miss the playoffs like many people were saying. And Marner's regular season point totals, that's something I've never cared much about anyway and I knew he'd have a bunch of points at the end of the season anyway, team's too talented to play like crap forever.

Cliff Notes: Maybe there was more hate for Marner than I remember, I think 6 monts + 2 months of smear campaign is overdoing it though. Also not sure smear campaign is the appropriate term - Marner and the team sucked for a while there, nothing wrong with saying so. JMHO.
I'm surprised you kissed both incidents. It was quite viral and was on media and the TV media and even players came out to talk about it. But understandable how it can still be missed. I myself didn't even know about the Monica lewinsky(the woman who was the mistress of the president bill clinton)Clinton, spears, or Janet Jackson T the times they were happening. Yeah actually I get how it can be missed now

Yup. Playoff success >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Regular season success.

I could understand if we'd at least won a few rounds by now, that would be different. But as long as we're setting records for playoff futility, I will never understand people who brag about anything anyone does during the regular season.

Consecutive game point streak, record breaking November, Marner's the smartest player ever to play the game etc., as long as we keep losing in the playoffs it's all just noise to me. Win in the playoffs, that's what I'm all about and until that happens, the chest pounding is just embarrassing.

I never kissed Monica, I swear I didn't. ;)

Are we just gonna sit here and ignore the smear campaign he faced for six months straight in 2021 and then for 2 months in late 2022. That was some britney level spears, Janet Jackson type shit kind of bullying. It wasn't everyone but it sure looked like most. Like the other ppl in this thread said, a lot of marner supporters stayed silent in the face of the mob while a national bullying campaign went on

I'm sorry but as much hate as holl and kerfoot get it has never been on the type of hate magnitude mitch has had. Not even when willy was the most hated, was it on the Velez of 2021 and Oct 2022
100% I stopped posting because of the Nonsense being posted by people on here. Mitch is a fantastic player for us. He bleeds blue and white and is a very proud young man
They attacked his family and himself and all he has done is play his heart out for the
Leafs.

Marner was there pick. If he went before their pick we would have dropped back...hence the Columbus trade it was conditional on Marner not being available. It was plan B
That's the way I remember it as well.

Damn those plays by him this period were something else. First that goal, that's as slick as it gets. And then he sets up Nylander, both plays off takeaways, more like interceptions really but I assume they're scored as takeaways. After all these 1st round exits it's hard to get too excited by anything that happens during the regular season but still, there are some moments that are so beautiful that they stand alone and that goal was one of them!

Can’t say enough about this young man he’s been everything I thought he would be just an amazing player i can tell you if he was up for trade there would be teams beating the doors down to get him

MYNHLDRAFT.COM They were always close enough it wasn't a stretch to consider either. Both high skill and size vs motor. There was no real #1c since Sundin and no Matthews on the horizon so a bias towards a true C was logical. Looking back to the Leaf Board back then there was huge talk about if Marner could be converted from the wing. If Strome was actually there for the Leafs it would have been interesting but the suggestion that he was absolutely Hunter's guy made the pick perhaps inevitable.
